Creamy char kuey teow in TTDI

Quacksta is priced at RM22. THE name Quackteow offers a hint that the char kuey teow at this food truck comes with a difference – in this case, the inclusion of duck eggs. The distinctive smell of noodles being fried on a charcoal fire adds to the sensorial experience for customers visiting the food truck stationed in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), Kuala Lumpur. As the wok is heated until it smokes, flat rice noodles go in, followed by bean sprouts, cockles, sliced fishcakes, and large prawns, tossed in their house-made sauces and finished off with chives and duck eggs. 'Many Chinese-style char kuey teow stalls use duck eggs for their richer flavour and creamier texture. We try to replicate the style here at Quackteow, using duck eggs sourced from our own farm. The Quackteow food truck parked at its spot in Lorong Rahim Kajai 14. 'What is unique about our version is that the main sauce is made and prepared by my mother,' said one of Quackteow's owners, Ezzad Emir, better known as Yob. He said Quackteow was founded on March 8, 2019 by him and two friends – Qudin Nazri and Faroq Tajudin – all of whom had no culinary background. The idea began over a dinner conversation when they were at a food truck spot in TTDI. Soon after, they decided to venture into the business. 'We tried more than 40 kuey teow stalls. We looked at how they cooked, what ingredients they used, how they set up and how they took orders,' said Yob. 'From there, we created our own version that stayed close to tradition, using ingredients such as large prawns, fresh cockles, fishcakes, bean sprouts and chives, and most importantly duck eggs.' Yob says the business has expanded to three other bases in KL and Selangor. Their first stall was in the form of a rickshaw (beca). It was designed to be compact and mobile, fitting the charcoal stove, prep space and storage all in one unit. They used rubber duck toys for order numbers, which soon became part of their brand identity. The founders decided to stick to a simple menu, serving char kuey teow in three varieties, ranging in price from RM12 to RM22. 'The standout is the RM22 Quacksta, which has smoked duck slices and fried duck egg, perfect for those who enjoy bolder, richer flavours,' said Yob. The Chixteow that uses chicken eggs is available as an alternative for those who do not fancy duck eggs. Yob said Quackteow has expanded its food business to three other bases – Desa Sri Hartamas and Segambut in Kuala Lumpur, as well as Petaling Jaya in Selangor. Quackteow in TTDI operates daily from 3pm to midnight. For details, call 016-568 2957 or email quackteow@
