Mamelodi Sundowns poised for another dominant season
Mamelodi Sundowns, one of Africa's wealthiest football clubs, boasts a squad valued at R744 million, with Lucas Ribeiro leading at R51.54 million, while star keeper Ronwen Williams is not among the top 10, and the team recently earned R228 million from the FIFA Club World Cup. Picture: Federico Parra/AFP Mamelodi Sundowns will enter the 2025/26 Premiership season with their sights set on an unprecedented ninth consecutive league title. Their recent showing at the FIFA Club World Cup further highlighted the gulf in class between them and the rest of the domestic competition. While most teams have spent the off-season preparing for the upcoming campaign, the Brazilians had their schedule extended by international commitments. Their participation in the expanded Club World Cup saw them go toe-to-toe with some of the world's elite, leaving them with limited time to rest before turning their focus back to local matters. That short turnaround could be a blessing in disguise. For a squad used to juggling multiple competitions throughout the season, a brief break may be just enough to recharge without losing sharpness. It might even give them a competitive edge heading into the opening weeks. There hasn't been a flurry of incoming transfer activity at Chloorkop, but with the depth and quality already in the squad, it was hardly necessary. The core group that powered them to glory last season remains intact. That continuity offers stability at a time when many of their rivals are rebuilding and integrating new faces.

Mamelodi Sundowns starlet set for exit? Twist in future revealed
Mamelodi Sundowns have shown no signs of slowing down as they trim their squad following their historic eighth consecutive league title. The club made headlines by releasing several players, including Sipho Mbule, Rivaldo Coetzee, Lebohang Maboe, Sifiso Ngobeni, Thabang Sibanyoni, Sanele Tshabalala, and Lucas Suarez. Now, a source suggests that young talent Ntando Nkosi could be the next name cut from the Tshwane side's large squad. A source revealed that 21-year-old Nkosi, who joined the senior team in the 2022/2023 season, may soon leave either on loan or via a permanent transfer. The technical team sees potential in the attacking midfielder. But the depth of quality at Chloorkop has left him struggling for game time. 'The club believes that the youngster has a great future. But the competition at the club is tough and they are believed to be looking at giving him more game time away from the club. At the moment, they are looking at either loaning him or selling him outright. But it's believed he is not in the coach's plans as things stand,' a source said. Nkosi hasn't gone unnoticed. Clubs from both the Betway Premiership and the Motsepe Foundation Championship have reportedly shown interest in securing his services. 'It is believed that he is not short of suitors whether on a permanent deal or even on loan. But there have been enquiries for Ntando (Nkosi). It's just unfortunate that he can't play more regularly at Sundowns. And it's believed that a move away from Sundowns could be beneficial for the player's growth,' the source concluded. Despite his talent and promotion to the first team, Nkosi has struggled to break into Sundowns' dominant starting XI. A move away, whether temporary or permanent, now looks like a crucial step in his development. Should Mamelodi Sundowns keep, release, loan or permanently sell Nkosi? Durban City, formerly known as Maritzburg United, is where Maboe made a name for himself before securing a move to Sundowns in 2018. As stinking-rich Mamelodi Sundowns become richer, implications for Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates profound
While Sundowns have been in the US, chairman Tlhopie Motsepe (with trophy) outlined ambitious plans to invest in local talent development and expand essential infrastructure. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Straight Talk Column by Herman Gibbs Mamelodi Sundowns will receive an impressive R174 million just for participating in the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup, as well as R36 million for each victory during the group stage. This substantial financial injection will enable Sundowns to easily maintain and enhance their stronghold in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), ensuring their ongoing dominance in domestic football. However, this development is rather ominous for the PSL's two glamour teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Both clubs boast a rich history and monumental fan-bases, often highlighted by the 'sold out' Soweto Derbies, where passion and rivalry ignite stadiums. Chiefs and Pirates have also enjoyed the thrill of several capacity crowds over the past two seasons. Until recently, Chiefs have not won a trophy in a decade, but they continue to attract lucrative sponsorships based on their pulling power, despite dwindling crowds. Yet, as Sundowns' dominance continues to grow, these storied franchises appear increasingly destined to remain in the shadows of their Chloorkop rivals. Sundowns' motto, 'The sky is the limit', reflects a commitment to transcend the traditional boundaries of sporting success. Their emblem – a hand poised with a finger pointing skyward – symbolises an aspiration that knows no limitations, whether rooted in historical performance or geographical challenges. The tragedy of the situation is that Chiefs and Pirates have shown no ambition to reclaim their lost glory, and will remain ensnared in the slipstream of Sundowns' relentless pursuit of excellence. There is no evidence that the 'Soweto Giants' will rise to challenge Masandawana or continue to watch from the shadows. While Sundowns have been in the United States, the club's chairman, Tlhopie Motsepe, outlined the Brazilians' ambitious plans to invest in local talent development and expand essential infrastructure. At the heart of this vision is the establishment of a world-class academy aimed at nurturing home-grown talent. Motsepe emphasised that the goal is to ensure the finest local players do not have to look overseas to join the ranks of prestigious European clubs. He spoke about an academy that stands toe-to-toe with Europe's elite institutions. He also highlighted the urgent need for robust infrastructure, notably the club's aspiration to build a stadium, noting the benefits of having a dedicated venue as a home ground. On the playing field, the Fifa Club World Cup will be a game-changer for the South African players wearing the famous Brazilian-inspired jerseys. They will face opponents with distinctive playing styles and strategies, propelling the team into uncharted territory. They will step onto the pitch against European powerhouse Borussia Dortmund and South American heavyweights Fluminense, and each match presents an invaluable opportunity for growth and development. Every match will serve as a test of skill and a rite of passage, transporting Sundowns from regional dominance to global contenders. With each opponent presenting a fresh challenge, the club has the chance to elevate its playing standards, an evolution that could define its legacy on the international stage. In their next two group matches, Sundowns will confront the blistering speed of Germany's Dortmund and the intricate ball control epitomised by Brazil's Fluminense.
