Delhi High Court asks DGCI to decide on plea against licensing of weight-loss drugs
The Delhi High Court asked the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) to consult experts and relevant stakeholders in deciding a plea over drug combinations sold in the market for weight-loss treatment. A bench of Chief Justice D. K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela asked the petitioner, Jitendra Chouksey, to give a representation to the DGCI, which was asked to decide the matter within three months. Mr. Chouksey, in his plea, alleged licenses issued for the use and sale of such drugs were not based on adequate data. The court, however, said the plea's concerns have to be first looked into and addressed by the DCGI. It allowed Mr. Chouksey to move the authority and bring relevant material and documents to its notice. Lack of clinical trials The plea raised concerns regarding the manner in which 'Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (RA) drugs, specifically semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide, have been granted marketing approval in India for use in weight management and aesthetic treatments, despite limited safety data, lack of India-specific clinical trials, and absence of a robust pharmacovigilance or regulatory oversight mechanism.' It claimed that 'numerous studies have further highlighted the significant risks posed by these medications, including pancreatitis, gastrointestinal damage, thyroid and pancreatic cancers, cardiovascular complications, metabolic dysregulation, and optic neuropathy.' The plea said these drugs were originally developed and internationally approved for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, with their primary therapeutic role being the regulation of glycemic levels. 'However, over the past few years, they have been repurposed and approved often through accelerated pathways for obesity treatment and chronic weight management, based largely on short-term efficacy trials,' it added. The plea said, 'In India, the CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation) has recently approved these drugs for weight- loss purposes without requiring large-scale clinical trials specific to Indian demographics or mandating post-marketing surveillance.' Mr. Chouksey said there is no evidence to suggest that these drugs have undergone rigorous safety evaluation within the Indian population. He cautioned that pharmaceutical companies, clinics, and digital wellness platforms are promoting the drug combinations as 'quick-fix' weight-loss solutions.

Bhopal college principal alleges Azaan disturbing students during studies, sparks row
Bhopal's Hamidia College Principal has lodged a complaint with the government over the sound of Azaan from a mosque adjacent to the college and has urged necessary action on the matter. Pushpalata Chouksey, the Principal of the college, has alleged that the mosque is built on land meant for the college's science department, and the loudspeaker disrupts classes and examinations. She has demanded a land demarcation, claiming the mosque occupies the space designated for the science building of the college. advertisementSpeaking to India Today, Chouksey said the constant noise affects students' concentration and has urged authorities to clarify where the science block should be constructed. The Bhopal Collector reportedly responded to her letter and has asked concerned officials to look into the matter. When India Today visited the campus, the sound of Azaan was clearly heard during study hours. College librarian Amita Singh pointed out the mosque adjacent to the library and said it is close to an open ground where students play and vehicles are parked. She also highlighted past incidents of theft at the library, which were reported to the response, Imam Hafiz Mohammad Farooq refuted the allegations, asserting that the mosque is nearly 300 years old and stands on Waqf land, not college property. He accused the college of singling out the mosque while ignoring similar noise from a nearby temple, adding that the mosque voluntarily lowers its volume during issue has now taken a political turn. BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma backed the principal, citing Supreme Court guidelines and the state's noise pollution laws. Meanwhile, Congress MLA Arif Masood accused the principal of raising the issue for political gain and said the mosque committee is already cooperating by controlling the volume when necessary. - Ends

Court issues arrest warrant against two accused of job fraud
Bhopal/Jabalpur: A Jabalpur court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) has issued an arrest warrant against a Central Ordnance Depot employee and another person for cheating the plaintiff in the name of providing a govt job to his son. The complaint filed by Rambharose Chouksey, a retired employee from an Army workshop, said that he knew the accused, PL Chaudhary. Chaudhary assured him of getting a job for his son Deepak in railways for Rs 4 lakh. Later, he offered to get him a job in BHEL for Rs 10 lakh on the pretext that recruitment in the railways was stayed by the court. He also introduced him to Ritesh Gupta, who claimed to be the nephew of former home minister Umashankar Gupta. Trusting the two, Chouksey gave them Rs 9 lakh. Chaudhary gave him a cheque of Rs 3.5 lakh as a guarantee and also handed over a 'fake' appointment letter and other documents for his son. When it was revealed to him that he was cheated, Chouksey sought to lodge an FIR with the police, but the police said that there were complaints of fraud against them already and didn't proceed with any action, thereby making him move to the court with his complaint. Hearing the case, the court of JMFC Jagmohan Singh ordered the police to register a case of fraud against the two accused and also issued an arrest warrant against them for their presence in court on the next hearing on Aug 20.

A video showing a Taj Mahal-style house in Madhya Pradesh is going viral on social media, not just for its stunning architecture but for its heartwarming intention behind it. Taking to Instagram, content creator Priyam Saraswat shared a video showcasing the ultra-luxurious 4-BHK marble house owned by businessman Anand Prakash Chouksey. The clip begins with Mr Saraswat asking if the house is indeed their residence and a replica of the Taj Mahal. The couple confirms it with a smile, following which the content creator asks if the home is dedicated to Mr Chouksey's wife. "Absolutely, it is 100% dedicated to her. And our love stands strong with us," Mr Chouksey replies. The businessman then explains that the house has been constructed using Makrana marble - the same material used in the iconic monument located in Agra. "The original Taj Mahal's dimensions in metres have been replicated in feet here. It's one-third the size of the original monument," Mr Chouksey says.
