Notre Dame Football Defense Preview 2025: Deep Irish D Should Be Even Stronger

The Fighting Irish defense overcame injury after injury, and it didn't matter. It finished the year seventh in the nation overall, allowed just 16.5 points per game, and allowed fewer than 17 points in 12 of the first 14 shouldn't be too much of a change under new defensive coordinator Chris Ash. The former Rutgers head coach bounced around for the NFL for a few seasons, handled the defenses for Ohio State and Texas, and now he should do wonders with this star power isn't there quite yet compared to last year, but the Irish are loaded with talent and depth. Now it has to replace heart-and-soul playmaker Xavier Watts, who's off to the Atlanta Falcons. This group is still Leonard Moore is the new star of the show. He was tested time and again, and he came through with 48 tackles with two picks and 11 tackles for loss. Christian Gray returns to his spot on the other side after intercepting three passes - his 99-yard pick-six against USC was one of the season's defining moments - with 35 no one like Watts at safety, but Adon Shuler was a force, finishing fourth on the team with 59 tackles with three picks. Luke Talich will take on a bigger role - he had a big interception for a score in the blowout over Florida State - and on the way is DeVonta Smith (Alabama), a top talent with all of the tools. - Leading tackler Jack Kiser is now a Jacksonville Jaguar, and now it's Jaylen Sneed's job on the weakside. A terrific athlete who saw his share of time in the linebacking corps, he made 51 tackles with 2.5 sacks and six tackles for in the middle is Drayk Bowen, a big thumper who made 78 stops, and Jaiden Ausberry goes from being a part of the outside rotation to the main Rover who'll get behind the line, making 58 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss. - The good and the bad for the line, there were just enough injuries and changes to get a slew of parts time to be ready for this year. Stars Rylie Mills and Howard Cross are done, but the interior has more size with 322-pound Gabriel Rubio now playing a bigger role on the nose. Jason Onye is a 300-pounder who'll get a starting nod at one tackle,Donovan Hinish could get a little starting work after finishing second on the team with 4.5sacks. Jared Dawson (Louisville) is a decent veteran to fill in on the nose, going into his sixth season. The end rotation should be terrific around Joshua Burnham returning to his gig at one spot, and with Boubacar Traore back after missing the season with a torn ACL. Bryce Young got into the rotation and made 23 tackles with a few plays behind the line, and Junior Tuihalamaka made plenty of noise with 33 tackles and three sacks. As temperatures spike, West End Resource Centre may cut hours if it can't fix AC

A non-profit in Winnipeg's West End said it could be forced to reduce service hours if it doesn't raise enough money to fix its air conditioning system heading into the dog days of summer. Staff at the West End Resource Centre — which provides a range of services in the Daniel McIntyre and St. Matthews neighbourhoods, from drop-ins to employment help — found out the air conditioning at its 823 Ellice Ave. building didn't work in May, when staff tried to turn it on. They discovered the AC had been vandalized, and the outdoor copper pipes connected to the system were missing. The centre said in a news release that temperatures inside the facility now reach nearly 30 C, making it unsafe for staff, volunteers, and community members. Chris Ash, the centre's community partnerships supervisor, said Thursday it may be forced to shift service hours earlier "for the next little while." "As a resource centre, we're a place that people come to cool off, get what they need, and we couldn't provide a safe space," Ash said. "So it was really kind of disappointing that that wasn't something that we could offer." Ash said since the AC's been out, the number of seniors attending the centre's regular events has dropped by half. About 50 clients use the centre's services every day, he said. "Whenever we have our food giveaways … we have maybe 35 people in the centre. So it gets warm really quickly," Ash said. "You can see people sweating, people struggling, people even giving up and leaving." The centre has been raising money to get the system working again since it discovered the pipes were missing in May, but Ash said staff shifted focus early on to helping some of the thousands of evacuees fleeing the wildfires in northern Manitoba. About $1,200 had been raised through GoFundMe as of Thursday evening to fix the AC and make it harder for people to vandalize it in future. Ash said he hopes to get the system fixed as quickly and with as little disruption to services as possible. Meanwhile, with heat warnings currently in effect for Winnipeg, the centre's staff is doing what they can to survive the sweltering heat. "Day to day, it's a lot of drinking water.… We've been having a lot of freezies," Ash said. "We just got fans everywhere and we just take turns in front of the fans, really."

At Notre Dame, O'Brien will suit up for head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive coordinator Chris Ash, defensive backs coach/defensive pass game coordinator Mike Mickens and the rest of the Notre Dame staff. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound O'Brien has had a strong offseason, impressing at multiple events, including being one of the top performers at the OT7 7-on-7 event in Dallas this past spring. On the first day of Week 4 action for the OT7 event, O'Brien showed off his length, range and ballhawking ability by snagging five interceptions and returning four of those picks for touchdowns. O'Brien ranks as the No. 136 prospect overall in the Rivals250. He also ranks as the No. 3 prospect in the state of Pennsylvania and the No. 7 safety in the 2026 cycle. Advertisement The La Salle College High School (Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania) athlete will head to Notre Dame with his current high school teammate, four-star offensive tackle Grayson McKeogh, who committed to the Fighting Irish on Wednesday. In addition to the schools already mentioned, O'Brien received scholarship offers from Alabama, Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio State, Stanford, Syracuse, UCLA, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and others. Rivals250 2026 CB Khary Adams commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame earned a big victory on the recruiting trail, landing a verbal commitment from class of 2026 four-star cornerback Khary Adams on Friday. Adams, who currently attends Loyola Blakefield High School in Towson, Maryland, is a member of the Rivals250, checking in at No. 246 nationally. He also ranks as the No. 5 prospect in the state of Maryland and the No. 19 cornerback in the 2026 cycle. Advertisement He is coming off of his official visit to South Bend during the weekend of June 13 through June 15 and the Fighting Irish did enough to convince Adams to join Notre Dame. Penn State was previously considered the front-runner for Adams, following his official visit to Happy Valley from May 16 through May 18, but ultimately Notre Dame checked off all the boxes for what Adams was looking for in a program. "Scheme, the environment and the plan they have for me," Adams previously told Rivals when asked what is important to him in his recruitment. "And also NIL (is a factor)." He will play his college football under head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive coordinator Chris Ash, defensive backs coach/defensive pass game coordinator Mike Mickens and the rest of the Notre Dame staff. Adams also took recent official visits to Oregon, South Carolina, Michigan and Maryland as well. Advertisement In addition to the schools mentioned above, Adams received scholarship offers from Arizona, Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, Miami (FL.), Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin and others. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Adams is a play-making defensive back with great speed thanks to his track and field background. He is strong in pass coverage in both man-to-man and zone concepts and possesses impressive ball skills. Adams also plays wide receiver for the Dons and is electric with the ball in his hands. As a junior in 2024, Adams earned first-team MIAA "A" All-Conference honors as a defensive back. He recorded 39 tackles, two tackles for loss, four interceptions, 12 pass break-ups and two fumble recoveries. Offensively, Adams amassed 31 receptions for 703 yards (22.7 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns. With Adams' commitment, Notre Dame's 2026 class now includes 18 total pledges. The Fighting Irish currently rank fifth in the national recruiting team rankings. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH PENN STATE FANS AT

Does Britain have the means to defend herself from the Russian threat?

SIR – A government spokesman has stated: 'The UK has robust plans in place for a range of potential emergencies' (' PM prepares for attack by Russia ', report, May 6). But are there the resources in place to carry them out? Peter Wickison Driffield, East Yorkshire SIR – Updating 20-year-old contingency plans and advice documents is one thing but – unless we actually create defences, employ sufficient people and supply kit for our forces – this country will repeat the major errors of 1939 in not being physically prepared. The main task of any government is accepted to be defending the country from attack. Far too little is presently being spent on actual defence. Christopher Robson Bedale, North Yorkshire SIR – One would never close all the fire stations in a city, then hope that there are no fires in the five years while new ones are being built. Will any party actually take defence seriously? Chris Ash Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa SIR – From my experience of the Ministry of Defence, hopes that the Strategic Defence Review will provide a comprehensive appraisal of the current threats faced by the UK, and make recommendations to address them, are over-optimistic. It is not an independent review. The military planners will not have had total freedom to lay out their concerns and remedies. Their papers will have been scrutinised and tweaked at every turn by the Civil Service. And, in the end, it is the politicians who will decide what can and can't be said – meaning the finished product will not include anything that could cause the Government political or financial embarrassment. Ron Powell Barry, South Glamorgan SIR – If the Prime Minister believes there is any risk of a direct military attack on Britain, he should not send a significant element of our depleted naval and airpower to the Indo-Pacific. The HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group will soon be on the other side of the world, with the majority of our new fifth-generation F35 strike-fighters, a large number of anti-submarine and airborne early warning helicopters, an air-defence destroyer, a multi-role frigate and a highly capable cruise-missile armed submarine. As far as the Russian nuclear threat is concerned, there is little point in the Government planning to prepare Britain for this scenario as, even with improved civil contingency measures, our public services would be massively overwhelmed. The focus should be on deterring such an attack by reminding Vladimir Putin that any use of weapons of mass destruction will be met with an instant and devastating response. Rear Admiral Philip Mathias (retd) Director of nuclear policy, 2005-2008 Southsea, Hampshire
