Boston Red Sox Reportedly Covet All-Star Bat from AL Rival at Trade Deadline

The Boston Red Sox have been heavily linked in MLB trade rumors this summer to a variety of starting pitchers on the market. Now, in the weeks following the Rafael Devers trade, it appears Boston also wants to land one of its division rivals' top hitters. Chris Cotillo of reports that the Red Sox are very high on Tampa Bay Rays slugger Yandy Díaz and have him on their wishlist if he becomes available at the MLB trade deadline. 'If the Rays do what they always do, and trade players getting close to free agency, someone like Yandy Díaz could be available. If he is, sources indicate, he'd be high on the wish list of some Red Sox decision-makers.' Chris Cotillo on the Boston Red Sox interest in Yandy Diaz Related: Yandy Diaz stats (): .285/.339/.454, .793 OPS, 14 home runs, 53 RBI in 368 ABs Díaz, who turns 34 in August, earned his first All-Star selection in 2023 and won the Silver Slugger Award along with the AL batting title. The right-handed hitter ended that season with a .932 OPS and a .330 batting average. While he failed to replicate those numbers in 2024 (.281 batting average and .755 OPS), he has produced much closer to that line as of late. In his last 40 games before the All-Star break, Díaz posted a .352/.412/.543 triple-slash line with 24 RBIs, 24 runs scored, and a .955 OPS across 162 at-bats. Importantly for Boston, he has played 242 games at first base over the last three seasons. Read More: Yandy Diaz contract (): $10 million salary (2025), $12 million salary (2026), $10 million conditional club option (2027) The question is whether Tampa Bay would be willing to move him. As of today's games, the Rays sit just 1.5 games back of the final wild card spot in the American League. Furthermore, Tampa Bay exercised its club option on Díaz for 2026 in March and added a vesting option for the 2027 season. Tampa Bay has demonstrated a willingness to trade players within the division, so the front office might not be opposed to moving Díaz to the Red Sox. However, given how close the Rays are in the playoff hunt and Díaz's team-friendly contract, it seems unlikely Boston will land one of the top players on its wishlist at the MLB trade deadline. Red Sox Get Great News on Masataka Yoshida's Future Plans in Boston

Red Sox Get Great News on Masataka Yoshida's Future Plans in Boston originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have finally gotten Masataka Yoshida back on the field. He's currently in Triple-A, doing what's needed to try to come back up to the big leagues. Advertisement The hope is for him to eventually play the outfield, but with his nagging shoulder injury, it remains uncertain if that's a realistic plan. Despite that, according to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live, the Red Sox are now being creative with the left-handed hitter. According to Cotillo, the Red Sox are planning to get Yoshida some work at first base. 'Checked in on this: I'm told Red Sox are planning to get Yoshida some 'light work' pregame at first base during his rehab assignment while they have the time but are prioritizing DH and outfield, as you'd expect. As of now, it's not likely he gets into games at 1B. But they'll see how it goes,' he wrote. Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida (7) celebrates after hitting a two-run home run against the New York Yankees in the sixth inning during spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images This could either be a telling sign that the Red Sox have no idea what they're doing at first base, or that they need him to play there because of everything that's gone on over the past few months. Advertisement It also signals that Yoshida's arm likely isn't in the best spot, which everybody has seemed to know at this point. More importantly, if they can get Yoshida back on the field and in the lineup, that would help a ton. He's a 112 OPS+ hitter throughout his career and has shown many promising signs offensively. The Red Sox lineup clearly isn't good enough to keep a hitter like him out of it, so when he returns, hopefully, it'll change things. Red Sox Expected to 'Shop Aggressively' at MLB Trade Deadline After Rafael Devers Trade

Red Sox Expected to 'Shop Aggressively' at MLB Trade Deadline After Rafael Devers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Once the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, there was reasonable doubt if the Red Sox would be buyers at the deadline. They just sold their best offensive player, so shipping off more of their assets would be surprising. Advertisement However, according to a new report from Chris Cotillo of the Red Sox aren't expected to be done yet, and in fact, are expected to target players at the MLB trade deadline. "The Devers deal opens the door for a major trade deadline addition of a controllable," Cotillo writes. "High-dollar player and a high-ranking source indicated Sunday that the Red Sox, at 37-36 after a big weekend sweep of the Yankees, still wholeheartedly intend to buy at the trade deadline and shop aggressively." This report is an indication that the Red Sox are targeting certain players, or have a player they want to spend a lot of their assets on trying to acquire. While unlikely, Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates fits the bill that Cotillo describes. A high-cost player on the trade block doesn't happen often. But if one does make an appearance, the Red Sox are expected to be involved. Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow talks with the media at George M. Steinbrenner Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images Whether this report comes to fruition or not, it's a necessary step for the Red Sox to make in their efforts to quell the irate fan base amid their frustration over the Devers trade. If the Devers trade led the team to getting a Skenes, or another high-profile player, then it would be significantly more palatable. Advertisement However, that kind of deal is hard to come by. And with there being very few players who fit the description, the Red Sox might not have the ability to add a player of that caliber. Not because they didn't try, but because none were available. But, at the very least, the decision to still be buyers, especially if they're still in contention, is an exciting proposition in the build-up to the MLB trade deadline. Boston and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow will look to make a major move at the trade deadline. But with limited options and the potential to fall out of contention, the Red Sox might not be in a position to make such a move.
