42nd Annual Pan Pacific Festival 2025
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Pan-Pacific Festival kicks off in Waikīkī Friday night and wraps up with a grand parade on Sunday. 55th annual Special Olympics Hawaii kicks at UH Manoa Wake Up 2Day's Chris Latronic reported live from the International Market Place with a preview of the entertainment lineup. He spoke with event spokesperson Alan Kinohata about this year's schedule and what attendees can expect. Performers include local taiko drummers Dragon Beat, musical trio Walea, sibling duo Kaika and Lilia, and Nā Hōkū Award-nominated group Hui Pū. The Pan-Pacific Festival Foundation and the Matsuri in Hawai'i Committee have announced the 42nd annual Pan-Pacific Festival, set for June 13–15, 2025. After a successful return in 2024 following a five-year hiatus, the celebration will take place at venues from Ala Moana to Waikīkī. The event is supported by the Hawai'i Tourism Authority through its Signature Events held in 1980 as 'Matsuri in Hawaii,' the festival began as a way to celebrate and share traditional Japanese culture. Over the years, its scope has broadened to include cultures throughout Hawai'i's diverse community. With greater access to resources, organizers aim to expand opportunities for global connection through education and experience. The festival features a diverse mix of cultural arts, crafts, and live performances across multiple events. 55th annual Special Olympics Hawaii kicks at UH Manoa
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Special Olympics Hawai'i athletes are ready to go the distance as the 55th Annual State Summer Games get underway this Opening Ceremonies began Friday morning at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa's Les Murakami Stadium, with hundreds of athletes, coaches, and supporters from across the state gathering to celebrate one of the organization's biggest events of the year. WakeUp2Day's Chris Latronic was live on location, speaking with Dan Epstein, president and CEO of Special Olympics Hawai'i, and Kenji Roy Momohara, a Special Olympics athlete, to preview the festivities. Athletes have been training since February to compete in events such as powerlifting, softball, swimming, and track and field. The Summer Games run from Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8, with multiple venues across Honolulu hosting competitions and special programs. The Opening Ceremonies also marked the finish line for participants in the First Hawaiian Bank Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run. Now in its 40th year, the torch run honors Honolulu Police Officer Troy Barboza, who coached Special Olympics athletes before he was tragically killed in the line of duty. Law enforcement officers from across city, county, state, and federal agencies join the run annually to raise awareness and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Celebrate the Summer Solstice at Capitol Modern

New technology introduced in fight against invasive species
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A new type of technology is being introduced in the long fight against Little Fire Ants (LFA). Lanikai Pillbox Trail to temporarily close for Little Fire Ant treatment May is invasive species awareness month, and the Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee has been busy implementing new technology to aid in the fight against LFA eradication with the use of drones. WakeUp2Day's Chris Latronic went live in Kahaluʻu to learn more. He met with Erin Bishop, the Outreach Coordinator for the Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee & Timo Sullivan of Aloha Aina Drone Company to witness their current engagement of an LFA infestation area using a heavy-duty aerial drone. The Ka'iwa Ridge Trail, popularly known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail, was recently closed and was determined that an aerial approach would be the best option to treat the tricky ridge terrain with Aloha 'Āina Drones selected to support the project. Drones are being used to deliver growth-inhibiting treatments to areas that are difficult to access by foot or by traditional methods that would normally take excessive personal time and effort. Check out more news from around Hawaii 'Drone technology is advancing our efforts to move this site from an active infestation to eradication,' said Erin Bishop. 'Drones offer a faster, safer and more cost-effective way to treat large, steep areas.' As of April 2025, there have been over 80 LFA detections on island. Bishop added, 'We're thrilled to move forward with this innovative approach — without it, the threat of LFA spreading into surrounding residential and recreational areas would remain. This marks a major step forward in protecting our communities and environment.'
