Police offer $500k reward after 27yo woman killed in Truganina arson attack
Police are offering a $500,000 reward following a fatal arson attack that killed a 'completely innocent' woman in Melbourne. On Monday, police announced the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Katie Tangey's death. Ms Tangey, 27, was housesitting for her brother in the suburb of Truganina in January when the home was engulfed in flames. Police suspect it was a targeted attack on the wrong house. 'Those responsible for Katie's death know they targeted the wrong house, and they have to live with the knowledge that they are responsible for the horrific death of a completely innocent young woman,' Detective Inspector Chris Murray said in a statement on Monday. Police suspect the attack was linked to Victoria's massive illicit tobacco trade. 'We believe we know who directed this crime, and we know we are getting closer to proving who was responsible for carrying it out on the night,' Inspector Murray said. '$500,000 is a lot of money – hopefully it will encourage those people out there who do know something to do the right thing and come forward. Katie's family deserve answers.' Two men were captured on camera carrying a jerry can, then fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured BMW X3 or X5 after a 'significant explosion', police say. Ms Tangey called triple-0 from inside the three-storey home, which was completely destroyed in the blaze. She could not escape and died at the scene, as did the family's golden retriever Sonny. Police released a digital composite image of one of the suspects in April, describing him as being Middle Eastern in appearance with a slim build and aged between 25 and 30. In June, a house in Dandenong was searched by police. No arrests have been made, and police are still analysing several mobile phones that were seized. An anonymous phone call was also made to Crime Stoppers, which has left police appealing for information about the nickname or pseudonym the tipster revealed. 'We know there are people in the community who have inside knowledge of the planning and directing as well as the identity of those who took part in the arson,' Inspector Murray said. 'We are doing everything we can to locate those people and hold them to account.' 'These people need to be held accountable for the fact they committed a crime, which ultimately led to the death of a young woman who had her whole life ahead of her. 'I'd ask how these people can live with themselves knowing they've done that and I would ask how people who know what the offenders have done, how they can live with this knowledge and not come forward and assist police.' The $500,000 reward for information leading to a conviction is at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner of Police.

Police offer $500,000 for information on fatal Truganina house fire linked to tobacco wars
Victoria Police have announced a $500,000 reward for information relating to a fatal arson attack in Melbourne's west early this year involving a mistakenly targeted home. The incident at Truganina on January 16 killed 27-year-old Katie Tangey. Ms Tangey had been house-sitting for her brother while he was overseas when the home was set alight and became engulfed in flames, trapping her and the family dog inside and destroying the three-storey townhouse. Police believe the fire was likely linked to Victoria's tobacco wars, but have said the house on Dover Street was not the intended target of the attack and that Ms Tangey had no links to the state's illicit tobacco trade. "Those responsible for Katie's death know they targeted the wrong house and they have to live with the knowledge that they are responsible for the horrific death of a completely innocent young woman," Detective Inspector Chris Murray said. "We believe we know who directed this crime, and we know we are getting closer to proving who was responsible for carrying it out on the night." An investigation led by Victoria Police's Arson and Explosives Squad has been underway since February, with search warrants carried out at areas across Melbourne in recent months. Police have not disclosed details about any suspects but are seeking information about a man they want to speak to about the incident. Investigators released a digitally composed image of him in April. He is described as Middle Eastern in appearance, aged between 25 and 30 years old, and as having a slim build. At the time of the fire in January, police said CCTV captured two people parked outside the Truganina home before an explosion occurred and the pair left the area. A reward of up to $500,000 has been offered for anyone who can lead police to the apprehension and subsequent conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Ms Tangey. The investigation remains ongoing.

Woman charged with attempted murder after Chadstone fire left three people in critical condition
A woman has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following a house fire in Melbourne's south-east that left a woman and two children in critical condition. Police today arrested and charged a 37-year-old Chadstone woman over the May 21 blaze at a two-storey property in Terrigal Street in Chadstone. The woman is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday. Emergency services were called to reports of the blaze at around 9:40pm, with a 37-year-old woman and two girls, aged eight and 10, taken to the hospital in a critical condition after firefighters forced entry to rescue the trio. A fourth occupant, a 36-year-old man, was not home during the fire. At the time of the incident, Detective Inspector Chris Murray from the Arson and Explosives Squad said a gas cylinder had exploded inside the home. "We believe [the fire] was from a gas cylinder … how that's come to explode is a matter for the investigation proper to unpack," he said. "Such an incident, where we have [an] explosion and fire, can be absolutely devastating. "One can only hope and pray that certainly the children get through this [and] the mother." Shocked neighbours described the ferocity of the blaze, saying they saw a "fireball" and heavy smoke billowing from the property.

Transat shares leap after restructure of hefty pandemic debt
Air Transat self service check-in kiosks are seen at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, on Friday, July 31, 2020. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paul Chiasson Transat AT Inc. shares jumped 14 per cent in mid-afternoon trading Thursday after the travel company announced major restructuring of pandemic-era debt. The Montreal-based company, which owns Air Transat, says it has cut its outstanding debt with a federal Crown corporation by more than half to $334 million as part of the agreement. Transat says it will pay off $41.4 million in cash, consolidate part of its credit into a single $175-million facility and issue a $158.8-million debenture to a Canada Development Investment Corp. subsidiary. Transat will also issue the federal entity $16.3 million in shares for a 19.9 per cent stake in the company under a debt-for-equity swap. ATB Capital Markets analyst Chris Murray says the debt restructure comes on 'highly favourable terms' for Transat, given the red ink on its balance sheet. Transat was one of several airline outfits to take advantage of federal aid packages during the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw border closures and health restrictions wreak havoc on carrier earnings. The deal remains subject to definitive agreements being carried out and documents putting the transaction into effect. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 5, 2025.
