Euro champs end Emus' World Cup medal dream
Australia's dream of ending a decades-long medal drought at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup is over after an 80-67 defeat to Germany in the quarter-finals. After a horror start, the Emus faced a 23-point deficit early in the third quarter at Switzerland's Lausanne Arena on Friday night. They rallied and cut the margin to four points in the final period before Germany steadied through star duo Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson. Luke Fennell (18 points) and Roman Siulepa (17) led the scoring for Australia, with Jacob Furphy (13, eight rebounds) also influential. Comeback falls short for the Emus 🇦🇺Our FIBA U19 World Cup campaign has come to an end in the 67 - 80 GER#WeAreBasketball | #GoEmus | #FIBAU19 | @nextgenhoops — Basketball Australia (@BasketballAus) July 4, 2025 But their efforts weren't enough to steer the Emus to the semi-finals for the first time since an Andrew Bogut-led team won a historic gold medal in 2003. Steinbach (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Anderson (18, eight) led the way for Germany, who will take on Slovenia in the semi-finals. "In the second half, especially the third quarter, they came back with some big threes, but we found our rhythm again and finished the game," Steinbach said. "It's a pretty big thing that we were able to show the character when we have a run against us. "We stuck together and found a way to win." Germany have never won a medal at the Under-19 World Cup and have reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1987, when they finished fourth. "That's pretty amazing," NBA prospect Steinbach said. "This group here is pretty good and we can achieve even more." Slovenia, who were beaten 75-68 by Germany in the group stage, qualified for the last four with a dominant 79-55 win over Israel. In the other side of the draw, eight-time champions USA take on Canada and New Zealand face hosts Switzerland in their quarter-finals on Sunday morning (AEST).

Fresh twist in death of Super Bowl reporter Adan Manzano as new suspect emerges amid murder investigation
A third person has been charged in connection to the death of a television reporter who had traveled to New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl earlier this year. Christian Anderson, 33, of New Orleans, was arrested for his alleged role in a recurring scheme that police say involved targeting victims, drugging them and robbing them. Among those alleged victims was Adan Manzano, a 27-year-old reporter and anchor for Telemundo based in Kansas City, Missouri. Manzano was found dead on February 5 in his hotel room in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner. Manzano's death came a year after his wife died in a car accident. The couple leaves behind a toddler daughter. An autopsy revealed that Manzano died lying face down on a pillow, unable to breathe after ingesting a combination of alcohol and the depressant Xanax. Security video from Manzano's hotel showed the reporter and a woman, who police later identified as Danette Colbert, entering his room together on the morning of his death. About an hour later, Colbert could be seen walking out of the room alone. Authorities say the woman later used Manzano´s credit card at a New Orleans gas station and several stores in the area. Colbert, whose arrest record includes allegations of drugging men and theft, was charged with second-degree murder and with stealing Manzano's credit cards and cellphone. In addition, Ricky White, 34, has been charged with murder. Kenner police said that the vehicle Colbert used on the day of Manzano's death had been rented by Anderson. After reviewing more evidence, including text messages, police say they believe that Anderson 'provided logistical support, engaged in post-crime communication, and assisted in attempts to financially benefit from the victim´s stolen assets.' Anderson has been charged with principal to simple robbery, purse snatching, access device fraud, illegal transmission of monetary funds, bank fraud and computer fraud. He is currently being held in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. Jail records did not immediately list an attorney who could speak on Anderson's behalf. Colbert had been on probation after receiving a suspended sentence by an Orleans Parish judge last year for a conviction of theft and fraud charges. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill's office successfully argued in court earlier this year that Colbert, who has multiple prior felony convictions involving fraud, was a habitual offender and deserved a harsher sentence. 'The evidence was overwhelming that this woman was a serial fraudster and took advantage of multiple tourists and innocent people over many years in the French Quarter,' Murrill said in an emailed statement. Exclusive CCTV images obtained by showed Colbert and Manzano arrive back at the Comfort Inn hotel in Kenner, Louisiana together before she left on her own. Surveillance footage - exclusively obtained by Daily Mail - showed Manzano and Colbert entering the Comfort Inn in Kenner on February 5 at 3.46am. He appeared coherent, following Colbert through the lobby, to his room. It remains unclear where the pair met. Manzano was found unresponsive on February 5 at 3pm after colleagues called for a welfare check. Colbert had been on probation when police arrested her for allegedly stealing the cellphone and bank cards of Manzano, a reporter and television anchor based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Third arrest made in drugging death of Telemundo reporter near New Orleans
Authorities investigating the apparent drugging death and robbery of a Telemundo reporter who was covering February's Super Bowl have arrested a third suspect in the case. On Friday, the Kenner police department in Louisiana announced the arrest of 33-year-old Christian Anderson on allegations that he had a role in the death of Adan Manzano, 27, whose body was found on 5 February in his hotel room in the city just west of New Orleans. Police alleged that Anderson 'played an active role in a coordinated pattern of targeting victims, drugging them and stealing personal property including phones and financial account access', the Louisiana news station WBRZ reported. Anderson's arrest follows that of Danette Colbert, 48, and Rickey White, 34, in Manzano's death. Colbert was charged with second-degree murder while White was arrested on robbery and fraud charges stemming from Manzano's death. In a statement, Kenner police said that a car used by Colbert on the day of Manzano's death had been rented under Anderson's name. Police also said that additional evidence showed Anderson 'provided logistical support, engaged in post-crime communication, and assisted in attempts to financially benefit from the victim's stolen assets', including Manzano's credit card. He was being held at the jail in Jefferson parish, Louisiana, which includes Kenner, alongside Colbert and White, according to lockup records. Manzano, a reporter based in Kansas City, Missouri, was found suffocated while lying face down on a pillow. Autopsy reports revealed that Manzano – who was in New Orleans to cover the Kansas City Chiefs football team's participation in the 9 February Super Bowl – had alcohol and the depressant Xanax in his system. Later investigations showed that Colbert had been captured on security footage leaving Manzano's hotel room. In May, Colbert was sentenced to 25 years in prison in an unrelated case that involved non-fatal drugging and robbery charges. 'The evidence was overwhelming that this woman was a serial fraudster and took advantage of multiple tourists and innocent people over many years in the French Quarter' neighborhood in New Orleans, where she first met Manzano, Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill said.
