Reds release INF Jeimer Candelario after struggles

June 30 - The Cincinnati Reds officially released infielder Jeimer Candelario on Sunday after he cleared waivers following his designation for assignment on Monday. Candelario, 31, was only halfway through a three-year, $45 million contract he signed before the 2024 season that made him the Reds' highest-priced free agent in five years. The veteran first and third baseman had been on the injured list since late April due to a lumbar spine strain. The Reds reinstated him from the injured list on Monday as he ran out of time on a minor league rehabilitation assignment and have let him go while owing him nearly $23 million. Candelario played in 22 games, with 12 starts at third base and seven starts at first, before going on the IL. He batted an abysmal .113 (9-for-80) with two home runs and 10 RBIs. His last game was on April 27, when he went 0-for-4 as a designated hitter in an 8-1 road win against the Colorado Rockies. In his first season in Cincinnati, he made 112 appearances and batted .225 with 20 homers, 23 doubles and 56 RBIs. Following stints with the Chicago Cubs (2016-17) and Detroit Tigers (2017-22), Candelario had one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, split between the Washington Nationals and Cubs. He batted .251 with career highs of 22 homers and 70 RBIs, prompting the Reds to pursue him in free agency. The Reds have moved forward with Christian Encarnacion-Strand at third base and Spencer Steer at first as their main corner infielders. --Field Level Media

Reds rally late, walk off Yankees in extras

June 25 - Christian Encarnacion-Strand tied the game with a three-run double in the seventh inning and Gavin Lux singled home Elly De La Cruz with the winning run in the 11th as the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a wild 5-4 walk-off win over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. Spencer Steer tied the game with a single in the 11th and Lux won it to give Cincinnati its fifth straight win over the Yankees dating back to 2023. Connor Phillips (1-0) earned his second career win despite allowing the Yankees to take a 4-3 lead on a wild pitch with one out in the 11th inning that allowed Aaron Judge to easily score. Mark Leiter Jr. (4-4) pitched a scoreless 10th but surrendered the lead in the 11th to take the loss. The Reds won for the first time in 31 games when trailing after six innings. The game featured an electrifying debut of one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, the ejection of Yankees star third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. for arguing balls and strikes in the ninth and loud cheers and jeers between Reds and Yankees fans. Chase Burns, Cincinnati's top pitching prospect and the second overall pick of the 2024 MLB draft, opened his career in blazing fashion on a steamy night in Cincinnati. Burns struck out the side swinging in the first inning, including Aaron Judge to end the inning. In doing so, he became just the second Reds pitcher in the live-ball era (since 1920) to strike out the side in the first inning of his MLB debut, joining Mo Sanford in 1991. The right-hander then became just the third pitcher since 1961 to strike out each of the first 5 batters he faced while making his debut, joining Wade Davis for the Rays in 2009 and Al Leiter for the Yankees in 1987. Trent Grisham whiffed against Burns to end the third, as Burns completed his first three innings without a run. Burns allowed three runs on six hits in his five innings, striking out eight and walking none on 81 pitches, joining Johnny Cueto as the only two Reds pitchers since 1900 with at least eight strikeouts and no walks in their MLB debut. But Ben Rice launched a 427-foot home run on the first pitch of the fourth to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Judge and Chisholm singled before Anthony Volpe tripled both runners home when center fielder TJ Friedl couldn't smother the ball and it rolled to the wall for a 3-0 Yankees advantage. Yankees starter Carlos Rodon was in line to earn the win, tossing six shutout innings on four hits and one walk, striking out five on 89 pitches. But reliever Jonathan Loaisiga was touched for three straight hits following a walk with one out in the seventh, capped by Encarnacion-Strand's three-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 3. Loaisiga was seen by medical staff and manager Aaron Boone prior to the double and left with the training staff following Encarnacion-Strand's game-tying hit. --Field Level Media

Reds designate $45M infielder Jeimer Candelario for assignment after injury-plagued stint

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jeimer Candelario — the Reds' highest-priced signing of the past six seasons — has seen his tenure in Cincinnati end. The Reds designated the oft-injured infielder for assignment Monday before their game against the New York Yankees. Advertisement Candelario signed a three-year, $45 million contract in December 2023. He is owed nearly $23 million, including $7,983,871 for the remainder of this season, $12 million for next season and a $3 million buyout for 2027. 'It was hard to get a hold of him. And (general manager) Nick (Krall) finally talked to him and said it was, as you can imagine, (difficult)," manager Terry Francona said. "I have tried to reach out to him, and he understandably, it was just going to voicemail, and I get it. But again, I will say, it's tough. I know that's not an easy decision, but we think it can help make us better.' The 31-year old Candelario was batting .113 (9 of 80) in 22 games this season. He had been sidelined since late April due to a lumbar spine strain. He was on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville before returning to Cincinnati on Sunday. Candelario played 131 games for Cincinnati and batted .207. Advertisement The Reds, who had won 10 of their last 15 going into Monday night, have been encouraged by the play of Christian Encarnacion-Strand at third base and Spencer Steer at first. ___ AP MLB:
