Launching just as the UEFA Women's Euros 2025 has kicked off, the campaign is in response to research from Powerleague that revealed 46% of women and girls in the UK have felt judged or excluded simply for wanting to play football, despite the sport's growing popularity and rising confidence among players. The research found that football is now one of the most widely played sports among the 2,000 women and girls surveyed, yet 25% have experienced sexist comments, and only 15% believe football is equally welcoming to all genders. The survey also revealed that although 48% feel confident in their football skills, emotional hurdles like fear of judgement and practical issues such as lack of local spaces continue to limit access. In response, Powerleague clubs across Edinburgh are working to create clear, accessible pathways for women and girls of all ages and abilities to get involved including offering local, inclusive spaces designed to support players no matter their experience or confidence level. Powerleague will also be offering a range of great food and drink offers including kids eating for free when accompanied by a full paying adult. Shannon Ghee On the campaign, Christian Rose, CEO of Powerleague said: 'This survey confirms what we've long believed, that women and girls in Edinburgh and across the UK are not only passionate about football, but ready to play. 'Yet too many still face barriers that simply shouldn't exist. At Powerleague, we're committed to breaking those down by creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where everyone can thrive, no matter their background or ability. Key findings from the research included: Joy and skills For many, football is also a form of escape or joy. Twenty-seven percent said it offered them a break from stress or routine, while 26% described it as a source of fun. A further 13% said the sport gave them drive and motivation. Respondents also shared what they would most like to learn. Tackling and defensive positioning topped the list at 42%, closely followed by penalty-taking under pressure (41%). Barriers The most cited reason for not playing more was fear of judgment or not feeling good enough (22%), followed by lingering beliefs that football is 'not for girls' (16%). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A lack of safe or local spaces and time pressures due to school, work or family were each cited by 15% of respondents. Others pointed to high costs (10%), or not knowing how or where to get involved (11%). Rubiales incident – a catalyst for women's football The survey also looked at reactions to the fallout from the Luis Rubiales incident at the 2023 Women's World Cup, when the Spanish football official was criticised for kissing a player during the celebrations. More than a quarter (28%) said the incident made them more determined to support women's football, particularly among women aged 25 to 34. Another 11% said it prompted them to become more vocal about inclusion and equality. Demand for equality The study also found overwhelming demand for equality in the sport. 53% want equal pay and sponsorship, 52% want more women in leadership, and only 2% are unsure about the future of women's football showing just how far things have come on for the better. Soul Brothers: 10 Black Male Singers We Lost This Decade

Christian Rose It never gets easy saying goodbye to the music icons of our culture. Some singers we lost prematurely, either right before they were about to show us their best talents or in the midst of their rise to the top of the charts. Others actually got the chance to live fruitful lives and reach an apex in their career that gives their posthumous legend status merit. Either way, the loss is felt immensely each time. 10 years ago to the day (May 14), we experienced just that when blues legend B.B. King tragically passed away from vascular dementia after suffering a handful of small strokes resulting from his type 2 diabetes. The only thing that makes it bittersweet is that he left us peacefully in his sleep. No matter how long it's been, the world will forever remember the name B.B. King. RELATED: RIP: Black Singers Who Died in the Last 10 Years There aren't many musicians who can make claim to what King was able to accomplish in his 89 years of life. He's released a whopping 48 studio albums that span from his debut LP in 1957 to the final one released during his lifetime in 2008, which went on to win the GRAMMY for 'Best Traditional Blues Album' back in 2009. Speaking of GRAMMY trophies, the guy has an impressive 15 wins under his belt that range from 'Best Male R&B Vocal Performance,' his first one back in 1970, to the six times he won in the aforementioned 'Best Traditional Blues Album' category. His accolades also include a Blues Hall of Fame induction in 1980, getting added to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement that same year, Kennedy Center Honors in 1995 and, while he was still alive, a Living Legend Medal from The Library of Congress at the turn of the century just to name a very small few of his honorific achievements. Although 'the thrill is gone' when it comes to having King here in the physical, we will always remember the music he gave us and the inspiration as a Black male in music who defied the odds and became extraordinary. Reminiscing on the 10-year anniversary of a fallen icon had us thinking about a handful of other male soul singers who we lost over the last 10 years. From the ones who are still living in our hearts and on our airwaves to a few that may be a bit more unsung, we implore you to look these men up and their timeless music if you truly want to put yourself onto greatness. We miss each of them in a way that's unique to what each fella contributed to the culture, and we can only hope this continues their respective legacies.
