Winona Ryder says she lost out on a movie with Marlon Brando because of 'Heathers': 'They were deeply offended'
"They thought it was making fun of teen suicide." What's your damage, Hollywood? Winona Ryder said she lost out on a movie with Marlon Brando because of her role in the subversive 1989 comedy Heathers, now regarded as a cult classic. In a new profile for Elle UK, Ryder recounted how she was told that she would "never work again" if she took on the role of Veronica Sawyers. And "I did lose a job," she said. After some prodding, Ryder revealed the role was for The Freshman, the 1990 crime comedy that also starred Matthew Broderick, as a naive film school student who accepts a job with Brando's mobster. Ryder said she already landed the role — then, the filmmakers saw Heathers. "They thought it was making fun of teen suicide," she said. "They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer." "I'm like, 'I can't work with Marlon Brando?' Ryder recalled, adding that she stood firmly by her work. "I had to stand my ground. I wasn't gonna apologize." The dark comedy centered on Ryder's Veronica, who is part of a clique of popular mean girls — all named Heather — at her high school, though she does not approve of their cruel behavior towards others. Veronica discovers that her new boyfriend, J.D. (Christian Slater), is intentionally killing students he doesn't like, including clique leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), who was not-so-accidentally poisoned; her death was staged to appear as a suicide. The late Shannen Doherty also starred as new clique leader Heather revealed last year, in a video interview for Harper's Bazaar alongside her Beetlejuice Beetlejuice costar Jenna Ortega, that her agent implored her not to do the film. "My agent at the time literally got down on her knees," she said. "She's like, 'Please, you're gonna destroy any chance of a career.'" And yet, "I think I made the right call," Ryder said. In a retrospective for the film's 30th anniversary in 2019, producer Denise Di Novi told Variety "everybody thought we were crazy to make the movie.' She also praised Ryder for not taking the advice of her agent, calling the actress "so smart, very brave and unusual." Di Novi added, "She was this amazing 15-year-old, if you can believe it. Winona got obsessed with the script.' Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly Solve the daily Crossword

Michael C. Hall Reveals Impulse That Resurrected Dexter; Talks Joyous Yet Complicated Reunion With Batista
Michael C. Hall is back as Dexter Morgan in Showtime's Dexter: Resurrection, having cheated death again and ready to slay more serial killer butt. The first two episodes are available to stream now. More from Deadline 'Couples Therapy' Renewed For Season 5 By Showtime 'Dexter: Resurrection' First Trailer Teases Michael C. Hall's Reinvention In New York City Amid A New Cast Of Serial Killers 'The Chi' Renewed For Season 8 By Showtime Following Strong Season 7 Debut The new spinoff follows the events of Dexter: New Blood, which ended with Dexter's son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), shooting his very first serial killer, his dad. Dexter decided it was time he be taken out, having reemerged with his dark passenger, unable to release the monster inside. It's part of the code, after all. In the first moments of Dexter: Original Sin, it's revealed that the titular killer had survived the attempt on his life and had been rushed to the hospital. The prequel spinoff, starring Patrick Gibson as young Dexter, follows the serial killer in training as he begins an internship at Miami Metro, where his father Harry (Christian Slater) is a respected detective. Dexter (Hall) explains in narration that revisiting his early years was his brain doing the 'life flashes before your eyes' before you die. Original Sin was renewed for a second season following positive fan reception and record ratings. Hall decided to continue telling Dexter's stories after the events of New Blood, halting justice once again. 'Like, Al Pacino and the mafia. It just keeps pulling me back in, I think,' Hall told Deadline this week when asked what it is about Dexter that keeps bringing him back to this universe. 'When we finished the series proper and Dexter put himself into self-imposed exile, I knew we may well be revisiting him at some point to find out what the hell happened to him. When New Blood ended, I had a more definitive sense that it was the end, and I think the character did too. He thought that was a fatal gunshot.' He continued, 'But some time passed, and I casually injected in conversations with show creatives, like, 'What if he didn't die?' I mean, he didn't get shot in the head. It's possible he could have survived that. And if he did, what would that look like? What storytelling possibilities would that afford us? The more I thought about it, and the more we talked about it, the more I was compelled. While Harrison didn't kill him, there was something in him that he could kill or do away with if Dexter could finally put down the burden of his penance and be lighter with this second chance at life. And what would that mean? Would he be able to do what I think he does in this season, reclaim himself, and that just became increasingly interesting. Then writers came up with an idea of this gathering that he might come upon, and plausibly so, given that he's in New York City. It was too tempting to resist. I was like, 'All right, let's roll the dice and bring him back to life. Let's do it.'' Before Dexter can get out of his hospital bed, he is out of consciousness and, like Ebenezer Scrooge, is visited by three ghosts. First was John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell, the infamous Trinity Killer, Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado, and lastly, Erik King as a very yelly James Doakes. Lithgow also appeared to Dexter in New Blood, but it was a first-time revisit with both Smits and King since their characters died in the original series. As an OG fan of Dexter, seeing him interact with three of the most loved characters from the mothership series felt like a homecoming of sorts. This is especially true in Dexter: Resurrection, a lighter option than New Blood but not quite the blue skies in Original Sin. 'That it was pure joy for an OG fan is a big part of why I was so excited when I saw it. I was like, 'Oh, it's gonna resonate, and it shows just how rich the mythology of the show has grown to be.' It was amazing seeing those guys and doing scenes with them, so many years since we started. It was incredible,' he shared. 'You know, I think it reveals just how populated Dexter's interior landscape is. I think those guys showed up in that sort of fever dream place, when Dexter was between alive and dead. You can never say never with the show in terms of the rules of the universe and the people who can emerge. But the abiding people from the original show are James Remar and David Zayas, you know, Harry and Batista. It was so amazing to reconnect with those guys and play scenes with them, with all the history that we share and the affection we have for one another. It was a blast,' Hall continued. The most shocking reunion, however, was between Dexter and Batista, former close friends and colleagues who now shared an awkward hug and a Cuban sandwich in a brief respite from the tension that would follow. Batista reveals he had received a call from Dexter's girlfriend, Iron Lake Police Chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), who told him she suspected her boyfriend, known as Jim Lindsay in New Blood, was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Although she later rescinded what she said, it was too late for Batista. His ex-wife in Dexter, Maria LaGuerta (Luna Lauren Velez), had similarly suspected the same before she was murdered. For Batista, who does not know for certain that his old friend was behind Maria's death but suspects it, it's a coincidence too far. 'Batista and Dexter, way back when, were friends. Batista was as close to a normal friend as Dexter ever had, and someone he's always been incredibly fond of because of his integrity, his honesty, and he's a rock. One of my favorite scenes I've ever played is the scene in the first episode of this season where Batista shows up in Dexter's hospital room. It was just so rich and complicated. There is so much water under the bridge, and this cat-and-mouse dynamics. But it was also just so bittersweet, these guys who used to have this simple connection, everything's just fraught with complication and suspicion now. I think Dexter is really fond of Batista in a way that he isn't otherwise even convinced he's capable of being fond, like he loves the guy in his way. He desperately wishes Batista would walk away. But knowing Batista, I think he suspects that he won't, and so that's dicey. That's all I'll say,' Hall teased about what's ahead between Dexter and Batista. One Of The Best TV Shows Ever Made Lands On Netflix Today, A Must-Watch Thriller
Mr. Robot Netflix Evil mega-corporations, brilliant hackers, mind-bending twists and nefarious conspiracies. If you enjoy this kind of thing, you're in luck. One of the best thriller TV shows ever made just landed on Netflix, and you absolutely need to watch it ASAP. Created by Sam Esmail, Mr. Robot tells the story of brilliant hacker, Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek). Elliot is the tech security version of Superman: By day, he works at cybersecurity firm Allsafe. By night, he hacks wrongdoers. Elliot is recruited by a mysterious anarchist hacker known only as Mr. Robot and begins working with a group of hacktivists called fsociety, whose singular goal is to bring down mega corporation E Corp (referred to as Evil Corp by the hackers). Elliot ends up joining the hacker group and things quickly get wildly out of control. From here, things take . . . some very interesting and surprising turns. If Fight Club had been more about hacking than, well, fighting and blowing stuff up, you'd have a sense of what this show is about. Twisty, unexpected, and deeply creative, each season throws you for a new loop. The story can be downright confusing at times, but it's tightly written and the cast is exceptional. Just when you think nothing is making sense, a new revelation ties it all together. This is a great fan-made 'Cinema Style' trailer that really captures the vibe of the show without giving away any major spoilers. Give it a watch: Christian Slater plays the mysterious Mr. Robot, a character whose true identity is central to the plot and to Elliot's trajectory. Carly Chaikin plays Elliot's sister, Darlene, a founding member of fsociety. Martin Wallström takes on the role of corporate villain, Tyrell Wellick, an enigmatic and shadowy figure. Other cast members include Portia Doubleday, BD Wong and Grace Gummer. Fans of political thrillers and sci-fi who want something genuinely unique, that explores heavier themes like mental illness, near-future dystopian technology and surprisingly creative cinematography and narrative structure, will find a lot to love in Mr. Robot. Add to this the exceptional original score by Mac Quayle, and you have one of the best shows on Netflix period. Actually, I need to use this as background music for a tabletop cyberpunk RPG. It's been years since I've watched it, and I think it's time to watch it all over again now that all four seasons are streaming on Netflix. Have you seen Mr. Robot? What did you think? Arizona governor approves up to $500M in taxpayer funds to upgrade home of Diamondbacks
PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed legislation Friday that funds up to $500 million in renovations to Chase Field , home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The bill, which won bipartisan support in both of the state's GOP-controlled chambers, will use sales tax revenue from the stadium and nearby buildings for infrastructure upgrades over the next 30 years, including improvements to air conditioning systems and the stadium's retractable roof. The team said it will also contribute $250 million for the renovations at the stadium, which is located in downtown Phoenix and is surrounded by small businesses and restaurants that see a boost of activity during the baseball season. The legislation is one of a handful of bipartisan deals that Hobbs, a Democrat, prioritized negotiating during the session. She says the funding is a responsible use of taxpayer dollars, will provide good-paying jobs and ensure the Diamondbacks do not leave Phoenix. Attendance at games has increased since the team's 2023 run to the World Series, where the Diamondbacks lost to the Texas Rangers. This season they are averaging 31,420 fans per game — the highest in two decades. 'Without the Diamondbacks in Chase Field, there wouldn't be the tax revenue that's being used,' said Hobbs spokesperson Christian Slater, who confirmed that the governor signed the bill Friday. The bill cleared the Legislature June 23 after months of debate that included the question of whether the Diamondbacks could potentially leave unless a public funding deal was reached. Other MLB teams have threatened to leave host cities if they did not get public financing. The Oakland A's, for example, complained for years about the Oakland Coliseum and an inability to gain government assistance for a new ballpark. Now the team is bound for Las Vegas, where a groundbreaking ceremony was held this month for a $1.75 billion ballpark that is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 season. Nevada and Clark County approved up to $380 million in public funds for the project. And last year voters in Jackson County, Missouri, rejected an attempt to extend a sales tax that would have helped fund a ballpark for the Kansas City Royals and stadium renovations for the Kansas City Chiefs. Lawmakers in Kansas are trying to lure the teams with government subsidies, and Missouri is trying to keep them with its own financial incentives. The Diamondbacks have spent nearly three decades in their downtown ballpark, which is owned by the Maricopa County Stadium District. In 2017, the team sued the district over funding for repairs and sought to remove a contractual clause preventing the team from looking into other stadium options. A perennial problem has been the park's air conditioning system and its ability to keep it cool in triple-digit summer heat, team president Derrick Hall said. Fans of country music star Morgan Wallen bemoaned the heat at a concert there last July, despite the retractable roof being closed. Concession stands ran out of water, and some people simply left. Chase Field was one of the first MLB stadiums to have a retractable roof. Now seven out of the 30 teams play under one, including the Brewers, Blue Jays, Rangers, Marlins, Astros and Mariners. Chase Field also has a small swimming pool in right field, one of its most recognizable features. The funding from the Legislature will not mean upgrades to the pool or to stadium suites, the latter of which was a sticking point for Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. She got on board after the bill was updated to prevent funds from being used for suites and a cap was placed on how much money the city would contribute for a land deal should the Diamondbacks break from the Stadium District, according to Gallego chief of staff Seth Scott. Hobbs is running for reelection, and while it's too early to say whether the Diamondbacks funding will be part of her campaign messaging, it's another bipartisan win, her communications director Michael Beyer said. Democratic state Sen. Mitzi Epstein, who voted against the funding, said Hobbs' support for the bill was wrong and hurtful for Arizonans. She said she was disappointed that amendments to create public benefits such as free streaming of games failed. ___ Associated Press sports writer David Brandt in Phoenix contributed. ___ The Associated Press' women in the workforce and state government coverage receives financial support from Pivotal Ventures.
