Vehicle's passenger charged with first-degree murder in drive-by Peoria shooting

Prosecutors provided further details Wednesday into the alleged involvement of an 18-year-old man accused of killing a 20-year-old early Friday morning in Peoria near Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Kemareon D. Bell, 18, was officially charged with first-degree murder Wednesday for his alleged role in the death of Teron M. Scott Jr. in the 300 block of South MacArthur Parkway. Assistant Peoria County State's Attorney Terry Muench said in a hearing that Christopher P. Adams — who is already being held on first-degree murder charges for his alleged role in the shooting — told police that while he was involved in the crash that led to Scott's death, he wasn't aware that other passengers, such as Bell, would have firearms with them. More: Body has been recovered from the Illinois River in Pekin The official charge filed with the court indicates that Bell was the one who fired the shots that killed Scott, saying that he knowingly discharged a firearm toward the vehicle, knowing that it created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm and thereby causing Scott's death. Muench said during Wednesday's hearing that Peoria police responded to the scene at 2:45 a.m. Friday in response to a vehicle having crashed in the area. Officers arrived to find a sedan crashed into a tree at MLK Park, with Scott found in the rear driver's side seat with a gunshot wound to the head. The Peoria County Coroner's Office later said Scott died instantly. A pair of other passengers remained at the scene and told police that they had paid for a ride in the sedan before the shooting occurred. While being driven, another sedan came up and began firing at the vehicle. Adams confirmed in his interview with police that he was the driver of this vehicle. The driver of the vehicle carrying Scott wasn't at the scene when police arrived but was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Muench said that surveillance footage taken from area businesses showed that Scott's vehicle was driving northbound when the sedan, which had previously run a red light, came alongside the vehicle and started shooting. Scott's vehicle would later dip off toward the park and crash into the tree. Adams was apprehended by police later that Friday, revealing to police that he was the vehicle's driver and that Bell was in the rear passenger side seat of the sedan. Surveillance footage from a local convenience store where Adams was shortly before the shooting showed Bell getting out of the vehicle from the rear passenger side, the same spot that he was when the incident occurred. Bell was also shown purchasing food from the convenience store before returning to Adams' vehicle. Peoria County Circuit Judge Mark Gilles ruled that Muench had established probable cause, with the detention hearing continued until Thursday at 3 p.m. If convicted, Bell could be sentenced to life in prison. Man arrested in deadly shooting of Peoria man; victim identified

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 20-year-old Peorian. Peoria police responded to the 300 block of S. MacArthur Highway after a vehicle crashed in the early hours of June 20. As they headed to the scene, officers learned a shooting had happened there. When they arrived, they saw a vehicle had crashed into a tree at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. When officers approached the vehicle, they saw an adult male inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. "Initial information gathered at the scene indicated the victim's vehicle had sustained multiple strikes attributed to gunfire," police said in a press release. "The collision that followed the shooting was significant, and the vehicle sustained severe damage as a result." The Peoria County Coroner's Office identified the shooting victim as 20-year-old Teron M. Scott, Jr. An autopsy confirmed he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died instantly. Later that day, police identified Christopher P. Adams, 20, as a suspect in the homicide. He was taken into custody in the 200 block of SW Adams Street, police said. NDP drop in polls could trigger changes in Manitoba seat holdings, analyst says

Some urban seats in Manitoba could see tight races as voting wraps up Monday for the federal election. Political analyst Christopher Adams from the University of Manitoba says a few months ago, polls suggested a number of Liberal-held seats in Winnipeg were set to switch to Conservative. But with the NDP falling in opinion polls and the Liberals rising, the assumption in many areas has changed. Adams says that also means incumbent New Democrats, such as Leah Gazan in Winnipeg Centre and Niki Ashton in northern Manitoba, are likely to find themselves in tight battles. 2:30 Winnipeg South riding profile One riding many will be watching is Winnipeg South, known as a bellwether seat. He is facing former provincial cabinet minister Janice Morley-Lecomte with the Conservatives and Joanne Bjornson with the NDP. 'As I've often said, as Winnipeg South goes, so goes the nation,' said Adams, an adjunct professor of political studies. Some other races will be rematches. Leila Dance won the Elmwood-Transcona seat for the NDP in a byelection last September. Conservative Colin Reynolds, who lost by 1,100 votes, is running again. Ian MacIntyre is the Liberal candidate. In Winnipeg West, Conservative incumbent Marty Morantz again faces Liberal Doug Eyolfson. Morantz won by less than 500 votes in 2021. Avery Selby-Lyons is running for the NDP. Adams said low NDP polling numbers nationally could pose a threat to Ashton, who has represented the northern riding of Churchill-Keewatinook Aski since 2008. She is up against Rebecca Chartrand for the Liberals, who finished a close second in 2015. 'The Liberals have a fairly prominent candidate … she has a shot at winning that,' Adams said. Also running in the riding this time is Lachlan De Nardi for the Conservatives. Former Liberal cabinet minister Dan Vandal is not seeking re-election, and the seat has been held by both Liberals and Conservatives in recent decades. Not running again is Conservative Larry Maguire in Brandon-Souris. The seat is, like other ridings in rural southern Manitoba, a longtime Conservative stronghold.
