(Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Christopher Ewert had a rollercoaster ride of a fight week. The UFC brought Ewert in to serve as a late-replacement opponent opposite Jackson McVey on the UFC 317 fight card. However, Ewert was released by the promotion during the official weigh-ins for the event, with the UFC commentary team announcing that the fight was off after Ewert was 10 pounds heavy for the middleweight matchup. While Ewert might not be a member of the UFC roster any longer, he will still reportedly get a chance to earn a UFC roster spot through the Dana White's Contender Series. 'People don't understand how much we tried and we started the cut at 216,' Ewert's coach Javier Torres told MMA Fighting after Ewert had been released. 'When we got to Vegas, we checked in at 216 pounds. [Friday] '[Our] flight was leaving from Phoenix 8:30 a.m., [and got] delayed until 11:05 a.m. and we got to Vegas 1 p.m. We did bunch of media, pictures, obligations for UFC. We [had] a small window from 4-6 pm, [so] we did a small cut — a 30-minute run, pad, mitts, sauna, [and] mummy.' 'We told our business partner [we wanted]'[Mick Maynard, our business partner] and I [talked] at 4 a.m., I told him what was happening. Chris started getting cramps, small ones. 'I let him rest, he couldn't sleep for shit. We checked his weight at 6:45 a.m., then we started [the cut again] at 7:15 — run and pads with the sauna suit on, and we got in the sauna and we did the mummy with sauna suit on. And we did this process again until 9:30 am. 'We did try super (expletive) hard. We cut 22 pounds from Wednesday to Friday morning.' Ewert got the call for UFC 317 when McVey's opponent Sedriques Dumas was forced from the card. However, on Sunday, Carlos Contreras Legaspi of ESPNDeportes reported that Ewert, who was scheduled to compete on the upcoming season of Dana White's Contender Series would remain on the schedule for an appearance on the August 12 edition of the DWCS against Yuri Panferov. As for Ewert's scheduled opponent for UFC 317, McVey, he weighed in at 185 pounds for the canceled bout. Forbes reached out to the UFC for confirmation on Legaspi's report. Ewert is 7-0 as a pro with five knockout wins and two victories via decision. His most recent fight came in January when he defeated Reese Watkins via unanimous decision on a Fury Fighting Championship card.

UFC Cuts Ties With Undefeated Fighter After Huge Weight Miss

(Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Sometimes you only get one shot. It sounds like commentary inspired by Eminem's iconic Lose Yourself, but it's actually true. Welterweight Christopher Ewert found this out the hard way. Ewert was supposed to step in to face Jackson McVey on the UFC 317 undercard. However, Ewert weighed in 10 pounds over the 170-pound limit. The massive weight miss led to the promotion dropping him immediately. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 25: Chris Ewert poses for a portrait during a UFC photo session on June ... (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC CEO Dana White and his leadership group aren't going to tolerate things like this from a fighter making their promotional debut—unless they've already built up a name, a reputation, and a rabid fanbase that travels well. That's not the case with Ewert. He has been impressive during his career. He's a perfect 7-0, most recently having won back-to-back fights with Fury FC. Still, it's likely the UFC wasn't overjoyed with Ewert's weight miss resulting in yet another fight being pulled from the International Fight Week show. The damage here is twofold. Not only did Ewert lose what could've been a life-changing opportunity, but he also disrupted McVey's momentum. McVey is also an undefeated prospect who has proven to be a KO artist. He was originally supposed to face Sedriques Dumas, but the latter was forced to pull out because he was unable to get authorities to remove an ankle monitor in time to participate in fight week activities. Ewert was the replacement fighter. He was pulled from a planned fight on the upcoming season of Dana White's Contender Series to fight McVey. Fans may be losers in this one too. McVey has star potential. The 6-foot-4 26-year-old has a 100 percent finish rate with knockouts in every professional fight. UFC fans will have to wait to see him in the Octagon. It's possible Ewert could still land on DWCS, but the huge weight miss is a bad look for his first UFC event. For what it's worth, Ewert's camp says they tried to hard to make the weight, but couldn't get over the finish line. As it is, here is a look at the UFC 317 card set for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 28. UFC Fight Card Main Card Prelims Be on the lookout for post-event coverage as Topuria and Oliveira have an opportunity to add another layer to their Hall-of-Fame resumes. It's a top-heavy show, but we're for it.

UFC 317 fighter gets cut from promotion after missing weight by 10 pounds at official weigh-ins

Christopher Ewert missed weight by a staggering 10 pounds ahead of UFC 317 on Saturday night. The massive miss resulted in his welterweight bout with fellow UFC debutant Jackson McVey being canceled. During Friday's "UFC 3017 Weigh-In Show," the broadcast team announced that Ewert missed by a significant margin and has been cut from the promotion before setting foot in the Octagon. Despite the fight getting scratched, McVey weighed in at 185 pounds to earn his show money. Advertisement Ewert looked to stay undefeated in his UFC debut, coming in with an undefeated 7-0 record before the cancellation. "El Tanke" knocked out five of his opponents and most recently fought twice in Fury FC before signing with the UFC. McVey, now waiting for his first UFC fight, finished all six of his opponents as a pro with three knockouts and three submissions. All of his victories came in the first round, with five coming under a minute and 28 seconds. McVey had four of his six fights in LFA and two in Shamrock FC. UFC 317 will culminate International Fight Week from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card features two title bouts, with Alexandre Pantoja looking for his fourth title defense against Kai Kara-France.
