Travis Kelce's 'Happy Gilmore 2' co-star, Christopher McDonald, lauds Super Bowl champ's acting skills

Travis Kelce has excelled in football, but this summer he is putting his acting skills on full display. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end will star in the upcoming "Happy Gilmore 2" movie. Hollywood star Christopher McDonald will reprise his role as Shooter McGavin in the sequel. Earlier this week, McDonald spoke to People about how Kelce fared during the filming process. "Travis Kelce has been out there, and I just really liked him as a person. He is really funny. Way too handsome, by the way, but really a good actor actually," the Emmy nominee told the outlet. McDonald continued to praise the three-time Super Bowl winner, saying he is "surprisingly good." McDonald was also complimentary of Kelce's skill on the golf course. "I think he's got game," the actor noted, admitting he "did not" get to play with the NFL star while filming. Earlier this year, Kelce described the opportunity to be a part of the movie as "a dream come true." "I thought SNL was going to be the peak of my acting and showman or entertainment career," Kelce said during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" in January. "Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain." The sequel to the 1996 sports comedy film is scheduled to be released July 25. It will be available on Netflix. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Hollywood veteran gives his verdict on co-star Travis Kelce's acting skills

Travis Kelce 's acting abilities have been rated as 'surprisingly good' by his 'Happy Gilmore 2' co-star and iconic Hollywood actor Christopher McDonald. Kelce has gotten attention from Hollywood for acting roles since his romance with Taylor Swift began in September 2023. The 35-year-old has appeared on ' Saturday Night Live ', FX horror series 'Grotesquerie', and as the host of Prime Video game show 'Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity?'. Kelce's exact role in the cult sports movie sequel is unknown beyond a cameo, yet, the Chiefs star is expected to have some screen time when the movie is released on July 25. It's a big deal when Shooter McGavin takes the time to give you respect for something you did around a golf course. 'Travis Kelce has been out there and I just really liked him as a person. He is really funny. Way too handsome, by the way, but really a good actor actually,' McDonald said to PEOPLE. 'Surprisingly good.' McDonald is set to reprise is his iconic role as Shooter McGavin in the sports movie sequel 'Happy Gilmore 2' was filmed from last September to December, meaning Kelce was on set during the last NFL season, where he has been criticized for not being at his best as Kansas City pursued a three-peat. Swift and Kelce packed on the PDA earlier this week as they reached a major milestone in their high-profile romance. The couple sent fans wild when they made their first joint appearance at an event during the NFL star's Tight End University in Nashville. While Kelce was technically working at the three-day NFL event, which he has co-hosted alongside fellow tight ends George Kittle and Greg Olsen since 2021, he couldn't keep his eyes - or his hands - off his pop sensation girlfriend. Photos have begun to trickle out from the 'Fortnight' hitmaker's shock appearance at the event in Music City with one particularly steamy moment between an unsuspecting Kelce and Swift being caught on camera. In a snap that has emerged from Monday night's launch party at cocktail bar LA Jackson, the loved-up couple could be seen sharing an intimate moment in the background. The 14-time Grammy Award winner had her arms wrapped around the NFL star's neck as she leaned in to the beaming Kelce. Plenty of other sports stars are set to make cameos or have larger roles in 'Happy Gilmore 2' including tons golfers such as Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka, fellow gridiron star Reggie Bush, as well as professional wrestlers Becky Lynch and Maxwell Jacob Friedman.

EXCLUSIVE Christopher McDonald makes shock admission about relationship with Happy Gilmore costar Adam Sandler

Happy Gilmore's Christopher McDonald has admitted that he and co-star Adam Sandler have never actually played a real game of golf - despite playing rivals of the sport in the original comedy film and its soon-to-be released sequel. McDonald starred opposite Sandler as arrogant star golfer Shooter McGavin in the beloved movie, released in 1996, and has reprised the role for the hotly anticipated sequel, which is due to land on Netflix next month. Ahead of its arrival on the platform on July 25, the actor, 70, spoke exclusively to about what it's really like working with Hollywood titan Sandler, 58, as well as who would win in a real-life tournament. 'We never played golf together,' McDonald confessed upon being asked who the better golfer is out of the two of them. 'Isn't that interesting? 'We've hit balls off the tee, we've gotten a lot of putting, a lot of chipping, but never an actual game.' Taking a second to consider who would come out on top, McDonald replied: 'I'm pretty sure I would own him. 'He's a great athlete, don't get me wrong. He's a heck of a good basketball player, he's got game, he's got the passes, so that's good. But golf is a hard game, and I don't know if he plays enough of it to be good.' Almost immediately after delivering his impassioned fighting talk, McDonald u-turned. Revising his answer, he added: 'I think we're probably even, to be honest with you. That's a safe, easy answer thing to say. We would have fun out there.' Happy Gilmore 2 began production in March 2024 after Netflix announced it had officially greenlit the movie. But McDonald revealed he had been angling for a sequel for almost two decades before the streamer got involved. 'I've been that guy going, "let's make a sequel" for about 30 years,' he said. 'I did have my moments of running into Adam and saying [clicks fingers] maybe 15 years ago. 'It would have been great to have all the people still with us.' McDonald said Sandler showed him the first page of the new sequel script during a visit to see one of his stand-up comedy shows. 'There it was, Happy Gilmore 2, and I was like "finally!" 'That was months and months ago, but it was great to see it in in action and it was so easy for me to fall right back into Shooter.' Uncut Gems actor Sandler has made a conscious effort to cast his family members, including his wife Jackie Sandler, in many of his movies over the past two decades. Jackie, 50, has appeared in several of Sandler's films, including 50 First Dates (2004), where she played a dentist, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007), in which she was a teacher, and Grown Ups (2010), where she played Richie Minervini's on-screen wife. And of course, Happy Gilmore 2 will be no different, with Sandler's other half confirmed to be making a cameo alongside their 19-year-old daughter, Sadie Sandler. In a pointed moment during his conversation with at Konnectgolf in Manhattan, McDonald took a moment to applaud Sandler for making the set of Happy Gilmore 2 a 'family affair.' 'He let me have my daughter in it in a scene,' he shared, referring to his 29-year-old actress daughter Rosie McDonald, whom he shares with his wife Lupe McDonald. 'It's a family affair when you work with Adam Sandler,' he enthused. 'And that is one of the strongest pieces that brings this whole thing together, that emotion and what you for your family and stepping up, because he starts out in a bad way and gets to a great way.' Besides working hard on set, McDonald did get to spend some downtime with Sandler - although he quickly came to realize that the multi-hyphenated Hollywood star is a bit 'too famous.' 'We enjoyed going to the baseball games that were right in New York, we shot the film in Fiddler's Elbow, which is a great golf course in New Jersey, and we watched the Yankees and the Dodgers. 'It's never, never a bad time, but you know, he's too famous, let's be honest. He can't go anywhere, so he needs a guy like me, you know, just to make sure he's not getting hurt.' Surprisingly, McDonald turned down the invitation to star in the original Happy Gilmore movie. At the time, he had just finished filming the 1994 action thriller, Fair Game, and wanted to spend some time at home. 'I hadn't seen my children and, I mean, I didn't want to be a bad dad,' he said. 'I had to play one more golf tournament, so I played golf, and we won, and I went, I wonder if the golf movie is still around. 'I went back up and Dennis Dugan, the director, gave me the script and I read it, and I thought it was hysterical. Long story short is I sat down with Adam, laughed for 40 minutes and said I've got to do this movie. 'So, they made it so I could bring my family up there and not live at the hotel and they'd keep them up in a separate place, and that made all the difference.' Coming back for the sequel has been a lot of fun for McDonald, and he's been blown away by the acting abilities of all the cameo stars. Besides the main cast – which includes the return of Modern Family's Julie Bowen – the new film features appearances from the likes of Eric André, Post Malone, Margaret Qualley, as well as professional golfers Keegan Bradley, John Daly, and Tony Finau. Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce is also among them. 'Well, I've got to say the man is a pretty good actor,' he praised of the Chiefs' tight end. 'He's very funny. I know him and his brother [Jason Kelce], who is very funny too, but yeah, he was just game to do anything and, you know, I hate him as a football player because he beats my team every year, but other than that, he's a really good guy too. 'We had a lot of laughs together.' Referring to the professional golfers, McDonald added: 'Acting's not easy, so it was interesting to see how they would take on the thing. 'Some of them were easy breezy, like Bryson DeChambeau, really easy and Rory McIlroy, really easy.' McDonald spoke to Daily Mail as part of Subway's exciting new Happy Gilmore Meal. To celebrate the revival of this iconic partnership, Subway and Netflix are teaming up to give fans special access to one of their all-time favorite movies with the special meal, which will be available at its restaurants across the U.S. and Canada. New 'Happy Gilmore 2' trailer drops at Netflix Tudum fan fest with some familiar NJ places

A new movie trailer shows Adam Sandler's hockey-stick-swinging golfer Happy Gilmore returning in summer 2025, with New Jersey as his backdrop. Netflix revealed the new trailer for the highly anticipated comedy "Happy Gilmore 2" during its Tudum fan event on May 31, teasing a sequel packed with celebrity cameos and callbacks to the 1996 original. Shot across locations in towns including Hoboken, Clifton and Verona, the new movie brings Gilmore out of retirement with a new motivation: ballet school tuition for his daughter. The price tag? $300,000. Gilmore's plan? Take another shot at the pro circuit. The movie set for a July 25 release on Netflix reunites familiar faces from the first installment, including Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, Kevin Nealon as Gary Potter and Ben Stiller as the menacing nursing home orderly Hal. The cast also includes Sandler's real-life daughters Sadie and Sunny, wife Jackie, and Bad Bunny in the role of Gilmore's caddie. In the trailer's opening, Sandler's Gilmore wipes out on the tee box while being watched by Eric André, Margaret Qualley and Martin Herlihy. The trailer also includes appearances by Post Malone, Travis Kelce, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Stephen A. Smith, Becky Lynch, Ken Jennings and others. Sandler hinted at some of the cameos months ago, saying on the "Dan Patrick Show" in December that he filmed with Eminem for a day. 'He said a million things we can use and we are glad we had him on tape,' Sandler said at the time. Sandler co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy and brought in Kyle Newacheck to direct. Martin Herlihy, whose father co-wrote the original "Happy Gilmore," joined the cast alongside some fellow "Saturday Night Live" performers and golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Nelly Korda, Jack Nicklaus, John Daly, Paige Spiranac and New Jersey native Scottie Scheffler. Golf courses like Fiddler's Elbow in Bedminster served as key locations. The movie also had temporary sets in Verona, Washington Township and The Oranges, among other New Jersey locations. USA TODAY's Brendan Morrow contributed to this report. This article originally appeared on New 'Happy Gilmore 2' trailer drops at Netflix Tudum fan event
