Former Wisconsin basketball star signs two-way contract with NBA team
Louisville's Chucky Hepburn – the ACC Defensive Player of the Year – has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with the Toronto Raptors, sources tell ESPN. Former Wisconsin basketball star Chucky Hepburn agreed to a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. News of Hepburn's contract arrived shortly after the second round of the 2025 NBA draft on Thursday evening, an event that welcomed another 29 newcomers to the professional stage. Hepburn's two-way deal with Toronto will enable him to split time between the Raptors and their G League affiliate, Raptors 905. The development isn't uncommon for undrafted college standouts. Arizona's Caleb Love signed a two-way contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, St. John's RJ Luis Jr. agreed to a two-way deal with the Utah Jazz and Gonzaga's Ryan Nembhard inked one with the Miami Heat, to name a few. Prior to the draft, the Omaha, Nebraska, native participated in the G League Elite Camp before working out for the Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets, per the RookieWire's Cody Taylor. His introduction to Toronto's brass, while brief, appears to have paid off. Following his stint in Madison, Hepburn transferred to the Louisville Cardinals and delivered his most prolific individual season of his collegiate career. In 30 games, the feisty guard averaged 16.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.4 steals per contest while shooting 43% from the field, 33% from 3 and 84.4% from the free-throw line. The output even earned him a spot on the First Team All-ACC and the 2024-25 ACC Defensive Player of the Year award. While at UW, Hepburn morphed into a fan favorite with clutch performances and timely buckets. From 2021-2024, he averaged 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game in 32.1 minutes across 103 games. The Raptors roster includes several ball-handlers, including Immanuel Quickly, R.J. Barrett, Jamal Shead and A.J. Lawson. If Hepburn shows out with Raptors 905, he could certainly fill the team's need for an on-ball defender at the point guard position. His journey in the G League will begin in November. Former Wisconsin basketball center adds to his list of NBA workouts
Former Wisconsin Badgers center Steven Crowl is compiling a long list of NBA workouts. Crowl, whose Badgers tenure concluded with an NCAA Tournament round of 32 loss to BYU in late March, has reportedly worked out with the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans, Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets over the past few weeks. Advertisement The 7-foot center's most recent workout came with the Pelicans on Thursday, per The Athletic's Will Guillory. Crowl worked out alongside North Carolina's R.J. Davis, Arkansas' Johnell Davis and Kansas' Hunter Dickinson. Earlier this week, the Hornets worked out former Badger Chucky Hepburn alongside Crowl, per Hornets beat writer Rod Boone. The two spent three seasons in Madison together from 2021-24. Crowl isn't the only former Badger to dip his toes into NBA waters this offseason. Star guard John Blackwell worked out with the Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trailblazers and Philadelphia 76ers before withdrawing from the 2025 NBA draft in late May. The Minnesota native started 141 of his 153 career appearances in five seasons from 2020-25. In those contests, the veteran averaged 9.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and two assists off a 52.5% shooting rate from the field, 36.3% mark from 3 and 82% clip from the charity stripe. Advertisement During Wisconsin's 27-10 season, Crowl started all 37 games and logged per-game averages of 9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He did so while shooting 54% from the field, 41% from 3 and 82% from the free-throw line. At his size, Crowl's shooting ability is an unquestionable commodity in the NBA. Given modern spacing and skill at the center position, the former Badger's progression as a shooter, especially from the top of the key, headlines his potential professional portfolio. Nonetheless, Crowl's odds of being picked in the 2025 NBA draft or signing with an NBA franchise are slim. The workouts will expose him to some NBA personnel, but his most likely route involves a career oversees. Will former Wisconsin star Chucky Hepburn be selected in the 2025 NBA draft?
All-American wing John Tonje isn't the only now-former Badger hoping to hear his name called during the 2025 NBA draft. Former Wisconsin star point guard Chucky Hepburn, who played his final collegiate season at Louisville, is another. Unlike Tonje, who is a clear-cut second-round selection, Hepburn is among a large group of players currently on the outside looking in of two-round mock draft projections. Remember, there will only be 59 selections this year (instead of 60) after the New York Knicks were forced to forfeit their second-round pick. Advertisement More specifically, CBSSports slots Hepburn just outside of its top 59 -- it has the veteran point guard at No. 77 in its latest NBA draft top 100 player ranking. Hepburn's stock is trending positively after a strong performance at the G League Elite Camp last month. He's looking to validate a breakout senior season with the Cardinals, which included 16.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game, plus shooting totals of 43% from the field, 33% from 3 and 84.4% from the free-throw line. Hepburn has worked out for the Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets, according to RookieWire's Cody Taylor. While the 6-foot-2 point guard is currently slotted outside of the draft's two rounds, he appears to be a prime candidate to sign as an undrafted free agent. He'd then need a standout summer league and preseason to play his way onto an NBA roster. Advertisement The former Badger brings a rare combination of excellence on the defensive end and as a floor general to the table. If he can't make an NBA roster immediately out of college, productive seasons in the G League or overseas could lead to a promotion. The NBA draft will be held on Wednesday (first round) and Thursday (second round) of this week. Hepburn appears to have a long shot chance to hear his name called during Thursday's second round.
