Ciaran Meenagh confirmed as new Derry football manager
DERRY GAA have confirmed the appointment of Ciaran Meenagh as senior football manager. The Tyrone native first joined the Derry senior football management team in late 2018 and served for five seasons as a coach, and also served as interim manager in 2023 following Rory Gallagher's departure. Meenagh has been part of Conor Laverty's backroom team for the last two seasons and replaces Paddy Tally, who stepped down after one year following a disappointing 2025 campaign in which the team recorded no wins. His previous stint with Derry coincided with an impressive run that included promotion from Division Four to Division One and back-to-back Ulster Senior Football titles. Advertisement The management team for the 2026 season will also include former Derry captain and All-Star footballer Chrissy McKaigue. Delegates also ratified the re-appointment of U20 football (Damian McErlain), Minor football (Kieran Glackin), Senior hurling (Johnny McGarvey), U20 hurling (Ryan O'Neill) and Minor hurling (Danny McGrellis) management teams.

Ciaran Meenagh appointed Derry football manager, Kerry name extended panel for All-Ireland final
Ciaran Meenagh has been appointed manager of the Derry footballers, succeeding Paddy Tally, who served just one year in the role. It has been a tough year for Derry, not winning any matches and getting relegated to Division Two. Tyrone man Meenagh has experience of the squad and was a member of Rory Gallagher's back room team for five years from 2018 to 2023, during which time Derry won back-to-back Ulster titles and climbed from Division Four to Division One. When Gallagher stepped away in 2023, Meenagh acted as interim manager until the end of that season. He has since been coaching with Down as part of Conor Laverty's management team. READ MORE Meenagh's first appointment in Derry has been that of former county player and All Star Chrissy McKaigue. Derry GAA confirm Ciaran Meenagh as new senior football manager
Ciaran Meenagh has been officially announced as the new senior football manager for Derry, making him the third consecutive Tyrone man to take up the position. The Oak Leafers have acted promptly in appointing a new manager following an extended search for Mickey Harte's successor last year. Paddy Tally was eventually appointed last November, but the Galbally native resigned last month after a disappointing 2025 season where Derry didn't secure a single victory. Meenagh had a five-season stint with Derry from 2019 until 2023, during which he took on the role of interim manager when Rory Gallagher stepped down before the Ulster final. The Loughmacrory clubman spent his last two seasons with Down as part of Conor Laverty's management team. The Mournemen clinched the Tailteann Cup last season and made it to the preliminary quarter-final in the Sam Maguire Cup, reports Belfast Live. Derry confirmed on Thursday night that former captain Chrissy McKaigue will be joining Meenagh's management team. The statement read: "Following Thursday night's meeting of Coiste Chontae Dhoire, Derry GAA is pleased to announce the appointment of Ciaran Meenagh as senior football manager. "Ciaran Meenagh first joined the Derry senior football management team in late 2018 and served for five seasons as a coach and later as manager – a period that included promotion from Division Four to Division One and back-to-back Ulster Senior Football titles. "He will lead a management team that includes former Derry captain and All-Star footballer Chrissy McKaigue. "Delegates also ratified the re-appointment of Under 20 football, Minor football, Senior hurling, Under 20 hurling and Minor hurling management teams. We wish all management teams and their playing panel every success for the 2026 season." Whilst Meenagh's remaining backroom staff are yet to be announced, names including Marty Boyle, Barry Dillon and Paul McFlynn have emerged in recent days, with rumours also suggesting former Derry forward Benny Heron could join the coaching setup.

Meenagh set to be named Derry senior manager
Ciaran Meenagh is set to be confirmed as the new Derry senior football manager. Clubs within the county are still to rubberstamp the appointment, but it's anticipated the former Oak Leaf interim boss will be unveiled on Thursday, potentially at the draw for the Derry club championships. His backroom team is expected to contain former Derry defender Chrissy McKaigue as coach, while All-Ireland minor-winning manager Marty Boyle will form a significant part of the set-up, as will Martin McConnell on logistics. Meenagh has vast knowledge of the scene in Derry, having served as coach under Damian McErlain in 2019 and then under Rory Gallagher from 2020 until 2023. The Loughmacrory native took over as interim manager in 2023 when Gallagher stood back. Derry won the Ulster title under Meenagh with a penalty shootout victory over Armagh in the final, before losing to Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final. Following that defeat, Meenagh opted to move on despite having a strong case to be appointed on a full-time basis. Instead, he took up a coaching role with Down and has played a big part in their recent resurgence, but it is understood he has parted ways with the Mournemen which paves the way for his Derry return. Meenagh will be the third successive manager from Tyrone appointed as Derry boss, following one-year spells from Mickey Harte and Paddy Tally.
