'He needs to be here.' Bengals' Duke Tobin, Mike Brown on rookie Shemar Stewart
All eyes are on the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive line as training camp is set to begin July 23. Four-time Pro Bowl defensive end and reigning NFL sacks leader Trey Hendrickson is still searching for a new contract and rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart is the lone unsigned first-round pick from April's draft. The Bengals and Stewart did not reach an agreement on a contract before rookies reported to camp July 19, according to The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway. More: Shemar Stewart: Answering FAQs about Cincinnati Bengals unsigned 1st-round pick Bengals director of personnel Duke Tobin discussed Stewart's holdout July 21 at the team's annual media luncheon. "I hope Shemar (Stewart) comes in. He needs to be here," Tobin said, according to Ben Baby of ESPN. The holdup for Stewart, the No. 17 overall pick in April, and the Bengals continues to be a disagreement in his contract's language over future guaranteed money. and the payout structure of his signing bonus. "I don't blame Shemar (Stewart). He's listening to the advice he's paying for. I don't understand the advice," Tobin said, according to Jaron May of WLWT. Tobin added that the Bengals are trying to evolve its contract language like the majority of the league has done, according to The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway. More: Shemar Stewart not working out with Texas A&M team, despite rumors Bengals owner Mike Brown said the language in Stewart's contract that is holding up the signing involves guaranteed money in the case of "conduct detrimental to football." "If we get a player that gets involved in something like that, or does something that is just unacceptable, then guess what? I don't want to pay him," Brown said in a video posted by The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway. "We say that if he got involved in conduct detrimental (to football), we'd have the right to terminate the guaranteed part of the back years. His agent says, 'oh, no, you can terminate the guaranteed part only for the remaining part of the year in which the event occurred.' "Oddly, something like this has never occurred in my memory with us," Brown continued. "I don't think it's gonna occur. So, we're sitting here arguing over something that I think is pretty remote." Stewart can't report to training camp without a signed contract. The Bengals reached an agreement on a four-year deal with second-round pick Demetrius Knight just before rookies reported to training camp. The Enquirer will update this story. What we learned about Joe Burrow's mindset, swagger and quirky side from Netflix's 'Quarterback'
What 'Quarterback' taught us about Joe Burrow (Imagn Images) It may have taken some nudging, but Joe Burrow finally stepped into the spotlight—this time off the field. The Cincinnati Bengals' franchise quarterback made his television debut in Season 2 of Netflix's docuseries Quarterback, which premiered on Tuesday. Alongside fellow signal-callers Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions and Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons, Burrow allowed cameras into his 2024 season for a seven-episode journey, offering fans rare access into his life, mindset, and leadership style. Joe Burrow like you've never seen—what we learned from his candid moments in 'Quarterback' Despite initial hesitation, Burrow ultimately agreed to join the show largely because of one key figure—Peyton Manning. The Hall of Famer, who serves as executive producer through Omaha Productions, helped win Burrow's trust. "I probably wouldn't have done it if he wasn't involved," Burrow admitted at a May 20 press conference. "But I have a lot of trust and faith in him to not do anything that would hurt me or the team." This level of control extended into post-production too, as Burrow personally reviewed the episodes before release. And while Quarterback avoids the dramatic tropes often seen in sports documentaries, it doesn't shy away from showing the fire that makes Burrow the competitor he is. Joe Burrow's intensity Is relentless—Even after wins Perhaps the most revealing aspect of the series is Burrow's unfiltered intensity. In one standout moment from a Week 15 win over the Titans, his frustration boiled over despite the scoreboard favoring Cincinnati. While Hard Knocks offered a glimpse of that outburst, Quarterback pulled back the curtain further. "Embarrassing performance by us," Burrow said. "F---ing embarrassing." 'Listen, we'll address it. But at the same time, let's enjoy some of these wins,' coach Zac Taylor replied. 'F--- that. F--- that. We sucked today. That was embarrassing. We jumped offsides f---ing eight times.' This scene, raw and honest, reflects why Burrow has helped elevate the Bengals from a struggling franchise into a Super Bowl contender. He's not satisfied with mediocrity—even in victory. No laundry, no dishes, no problem While Burrow's on-field persona is intense, his off-field quirks provide some lighter moments. Viewers were treated to a candid conversation with his mother, revealing that domestic chores aren't exactly his forte. 'I don't really like doing my laundry or dishes,' Burrow confessed. '... I mean, I know how to do them. I just don't like doing them.' It's a moment of levity that humanizes the two-time Pro Bowler—and reminds fans that even elite quarterbacks have their blind spots. A football mind that knows the value of the run One of the most insightful moments came while Burrow watched the Detroit Lions from home. Reflecting on their offensive firepower, he credited their ground game. 'It starts with running the ball,' he said. 'They run the ball better than anybody.' He's not wrong. The Lions were statistically one of the best offenses in 2024, powered by balance and dominance in the run game. It's a formula Burrow no doubt envies, especially considering Cincinnati's persistent struggles in that area. As Quarterback shows, Burrow isn't just the face of a franchise—he's a complex, driven leader with high standards and sharp football instincts. And now, thanks to Netflix, the world finally gets a deeper look at the man behind the stripes. Bengals' Joe Burrow talks burglary, Batmobile on Netflix series
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow isn't getting that Batmobile after all. As revealed on Netflix's 'Quarterback,' which was released this week, Burrow wound up making the decision around the time of the very public break-in of his home during last season's Week 14 slate. "I didn't end up getting the Batmobile because I just had other things I wanted to deal with at that point," Burrow said on the show. RELATED: Cincinnati Bengals' 53-man roster projection following 2025 offseason Burrow also revealed, among other things, that he considered moving after the break-in at his home. Otherwise, beyond the invasion of privacy, he remained level-headed about the ordeal. "They got all my jewelry, but they could have stolen way worse things than that," Burrow said of the break-in. "I'm not going crazy about some jewelry. It was expensive, but it was all insured." Last year, Burrow told teammates he bought one of the replica Batmobiles priced at roughly $3 million. Authorities arrested those allegedly responsible or connected to the robbery of Burrow's home early this year. RELATED: Joe Burrow feelings on Trey Hendrickson contract standoff revealed
