Corey Heim nearly leads wire-to-wire in winning at Lime Rock Park
Corey Heim's victory in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series' debut at Lime Rock Park wasn't just a case of domination. It was an eyelash away from perfection. HT Image Heim led 99 of 100 laps at the 1.478-mile road course in bucolic Lakeville, Connecticut, to win the LiUNA! 150 his fifth victory of the season and the 16th of his career. The only lap Heim failed to lead came on a restart with five laps left, after Matt Mills ran off course and stalled near Turn 1 on Lap 90. Layne Riggs beat Heim to the start/finish line on Lap 96 but drove hard into the first corner and stacked up the field behind him, scrambling positions two through five. Aside from the one lap he didn't lead, Heim's performance was the model of consistent excellence. The driver of the No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota posted the fastest lap of the race on his second circuit , swept both stages, and posted dramatic margins over his closest pursuers in each of the first two segments. Heim is the first driver in Truck Series history to win three-straight road- course races, having triumphed at Mid-Ohio in 2023 and Circuit of the Americas last year. "Yeah, that was nothing short of incredible," Heim acknowledged. "These road courses-I really look forward to them, pre-event and whatnot, and I really prepare for them, so to see all that pay off with Safelite, TRICON, Toyota, it's super special. "Obviously, the truck was so good today. I can't complain one bit about that. A flawless day and we will take that and move forward and try and collect some wins that we should have had this year." Reigning series champion Ty Majeski was the beneficiary of Riggs' aggressive charge into Turn 1 on the final restart. Majeski inherited the runner-up position and crossed the finish line 1.381 seconds behind Heim. "Honestly, we struggled with the truck a little bit to fire off," Majeski said. "We kept getting it better progressively each and every run. So, got it close at the end, had a shot at Corey and probably got a little over-zealous in Turn 4, hit the curb and kind of ruined my shot to make him a least a little nervous and try to force him into a mistake. "From there, he just got too much breathing room and was kind of able to do his thing. Overall, really good day. This is the point when I want to turn our season around-going to IRP , Watkins Glen and Richmond next. Three really good tracks for us, so I'm excited for this Playoff stretch." Rookie Giovanni Ruggiero ran third, followed by Ben Rhodes and Australian Cam Waters, as ThorSport Racing put three drivers in the top five . Riggs fell to 12th during the Turn 1 melee and finished 13th. Road course ace Jordan Taylor, who finished third in the first two stages, dropped to 20th at the finish. Heim started from the pole and led all 35 laps in Stage 1, building an advantage of 7.065 seconds over second-place Riggs at the first green/checkered flag. Third-place Taylor, a star in the sportscar ranks, was 14.051 seconds in arrears at the first stage break. After Lap 37, the race trucks came to pit road for a controlled stop under red-flag conditions. The restart on Lap 40 brought no changes at the front of the field. Heim cleared Riggs through the first two corners and quickly expanded his advantage over the second-place truck. The second stage mirrored the first. Heim beat Riggs to the finish line by 7.281 seconds, with Taylor in third trailing by 14.286 seconds. The two stage wins were the 13th and 14th for Heim this season. Denny Hamlin Joins NASCAR Penalty Debate: "Boxed In So Many Areas"
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing and driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, has revealed his stance on the current debate about the amount of penalties being given in NASCAR. There have been a large amount of disqualifications just twelve races into the season. Just this week Chris Buescher and RFK Racing were hit with a hefty $75,000 fine, docked 60 championship points, 5 playoff points, and his crew chief Scott Graves was suspended for two races. When asked about the ongoing debate about whether there are too many penalties, Hamlin explained: Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 Progressive Toyota, enters his car during the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Pit Road Qualifying Entry/Exit Practice (Open) at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 16, 2025 in North Wilkesboro, North... More"I mean, certainly gotta be fair to everyone. Had a race win taken away. We won for all for sure. And whatever it is, whatever the infraction, whatever says in the book. The penalty should be level. It shouldn't be negotiated up or down or anything like that, just by the book. "Teams are trying to find any edge that they can with the Next-Gen car because you're boxed in so many areas... It's just a game of can you get caught or not." "They don't bolster it as much."@dennyhamlin shares his opinion on how #NASCAR promotes the All-Star Race and the $1 million dollar prize. He also discusses the development of 23XI Racing's pit crews and the rise in disqualifications. — Frontstretch (@Frontstretch) May 17, 2025 What penalties have been given in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series so far? Chase Elliott fourth in standings despite winless streak: ‘We're capable of more'
FORT WORTH, Texas — Chase Elliott returned to the track where he earned his last NASCAR Cup Series points-race victory. And he didn't know how to feel. He could have felt excited because he was returning to the Texas Motor Speedway track where he last earned a win (not including the preseason exhibition Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium). Or he could have returned with a little bit of frustration, considering it has been more than a full year (37 races) since his last triumph. "Obviously, I would have loved to have had more points wins," Elliott said. "Certainly the Clash was a great weekend for us. And while it wasn't a points win — and I'm very much aware of that — it wasn't like nobody was trying. "For us, that was a great way to start the season, and we just have to keep building on it." Elliott said he takes things week to week and believes the lessons learned in recent races are much more pertinent than what they might have learned a year ago at Texas. He qualified 29th and ended up 16th at Texas, and it was a frustrating day. He took two tires for track position after the second stage, but he wasn't able to maintain a top-10 pace and then battled a vibration. But he remains fourth in the Cup standings, well above the current playoff cut line. In 11 races, Elliott has three top fives, six top 10s and no finishes worse than 20th. So it's not like the Hendrick driver has had a bad season. Far from it. But he also has not won a stage this year, let alone a race. "No different than anyone else on our team. We want more," Elliott said prior to the Texas race. "We're capable of more, and we just have high expectations of ourselves and we know what we're capable of. "That's where we are proud of those good runs that we've had. But we know that there's more in the tank and that we can extract more out of our team and race results and lead some more laps and get ourselves in good position." Elliott has led laps in just three races this year. He led two laps at Daytona, 42 laps at Martinsville and one lap at Talladega. He has not finished better than fourth. He has finished in the top 10 in nine of the 22 stages this year but has finished in the top four in stages just four times. "We've had a couple opportunities at [wins and stage wins] this year, but certainly not the amount of opportunities that I think we need to have, or that we should have, or that we should give ourselves," Elliott said. "The season is still very early. ... I've seen enough high spots to kind of give me hope." The fourth-place finish at Circuit of the Americas and the other fourth-place finish at Martinsville were among those that give him hope. He has been in the mix at all the superspeedways and entered Texas coming off a fifth-place finish at Talladega. "There's been enough high spots in there for me to have confidence in some of the things that we're doing and keep going to work each week," Elliott said. So what's the answer? For Elliott, he said he needs to keep faith in their preparation and continue preparing like they know they should. "All you can do when you're in this fight is just keep showing up ... continue to put the right amount of effort throughout the weekend to make sure you're prepared to show up on any given weekend and put together a solid day," Elliott said. "But it's all got to go together. It all has to come together at the right time. I have to do my job. We've got to call good races on the box. We have to have good pit stops. It's all there. Obviously, we want more and we expect more." Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. Formula One extends Miami GP contract to 2041
Formula One handed Miami the longest contract on the calendar on Friday, securing the grand prix until 2041 with a 10-year extension on top of an existing decade-long deal. Miami is the first of three races in the United States - the others being Austin's Circuit of the Americas and Las Vegas - and Formula One is at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens this weekend. The race was held for the first time in 2022. Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali said the extension marked "a strategic milestone of enormous importance". "In this moment of an incredible period of growth of Formula One, we want to make sure that we stay tuned and work together with the best partner that we have," the Italian told a press conference. "Miami will be part of our bigger strategy to be even stronger in the United States of America. This is a place where it is crucial to be. "We are getting bigger and bigger but we are still very small if you compare to the biggest sport franchise in the US... this will help us to grow in the right segment, in the right direction. "We want to think bigger and bigger. The only way to think big is to work together with partners that are the best and will help us to know an environment that we are still discovering." Liberty Media-owned Formula One has boomed in popularity, particularly in the Americas where it has plenty of potential for growth, thanks largely to the hit Netflix docu-series 'Drive to Survive'. A Hollywood movie 'F1', starring Brad Pitt, is due for release next month. Domenicali said also that there was a lot of interest in the US media rights package, currently held by ESPN, with discussions ongoing. He gave no details of the interested parties. Miami GP promoter Tom Garfinkel said the extension would enable organisers to invest more in the event and make improvements. The Hard Rock Stadium is home to the NFL Miami Dolphins and also a venue for football - including next year's World Cup - and concerts. The surrounding complex also hosts tennis and track day events. "This has a huge impact, both financially on South Florida but also locally here in the Miami Gardens community," said Garfinkel, adding they could now be sure the event was here to stay. "When you take someone to an event who's a casual fan who may not love the sport, that's when they really fall in love and become more of an avid fan," he said. "So we believe if we're here doing that year after year, we're just going to grow more fans here in the United States."
