Sonia Citron makes her move for WNBA Rookie of the Year
The 2025 WNBA rookie class has already been making a big impact this season. The main headliner is Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers, of course, but Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron should be getting more consideration for Rookie of the Year. It was pretty much set in stone that Caitlin Clark was going to win Rookie of the Year in 2024 based on her performance on the court and the impact she had off it. This year, the race is far more wide open. The current betting favorites to win rookie of the year are Bueckers (-1400), Kiki Iriafen (+900) and Sonia Citron (+2200). Citron is a major reason why the Washington Mystics are 7-8 and have a chance to make the playoffs. She has started and played in every game this season, has scored in double figures in all but one Mystics game and is averaging 32.9 minutes per night. The Notre Dame product has hit multiple big shots this year and has worked incredibly well with teammate and fellow rookie Kiki Iriafen. Washington isn't getting blown out or tanking this year and Citron (14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists) is a big reason why. Her ability to guard multiple positions has made the 21-year-old a player the Mystics must rely on to win ball games. It's clear head coach Sydney Johnson already trusts her to do just that on both sides of the floor. The rookie guards multiple positions and handles the ball in pressure situations. It doesn't hurt that she's averaging a steal a game, either, and can get buckets when needed to — like when she dropped a season-high 27 points against Bueckers' Wings last week. Her fiercest competition for Rookie of the Year may be teammate Kiki Iriafen, who is averaging 13.3 points and 8.8 rebounds so far this season while collecting five double-doubles. Her post presence cannot be understated. Bueckers is scoring 17.7 points per game while dishing out 5.8 assists per contest. She has the social media following, the hype and has to be the main threat for a bad Dallas Wings team. Citron is a lot more low-key in terms of social media, but her game has spoken volumes this season. With her Rookie of the Year odds still at 22-1 (+2200 at BetMGM), it seems not enough people have caught on just yet.

Want an insect-free kitchen? 9 expert tips to keep them away this summer
There's something about summer that makes even the mildest smell more pungent. The heat has a natural habit of ramping up the stink stakes, and even the cleanest of homes can take on a distinct, unwanted aroma. However, while some smells are bearable and can be alleviated by opening a window or using an extractor fan, others are more deeply rooted and require long-term solutions. A smelly kitchen garbage can is among the worst household smells. A buildup of cooked and uncooked food, leftover kitchen scraps and even uneaten pet food contributes to a stink beyond all stinks. And it's all heightened in summer with the extra heat that ramps up bacterial growth and speeds up the decomposition of organic waste. What we're left with is a bad smell emitting from our kitchen garbage. However, I'm here to help save your senses, along with Nancy Emery, cleaning expert at Tap Warehouse. Together we share 9 ways to keep your kitchen garbage clean and insect-free in the summer. Because once it starts to smell and overripe fruit and vegetable waste ripens, it's also a breeding ground for pesky fruit flies. There's really nothing as valuable as staying on top of this gross household task to ensure it doesn't get out of hand. Emery says, 'Cleaning regularly is the best way to keep on top of your kitchen hygiene and limit the spread of bacteria and bad smells. Try to ensure that every spill or splatter is cleaned straight away and regularly clean the lid of your bins to ensure no unseen bacteria is left behind.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I always use an antibacterial spray on my garbage can, such as Method's Antibacterial All Purpose Cleaner Spray, $4 at Amazon, which has a refreshing Citron scent. Emery also recommends considering the bin bags you use. Yes, you heard it, don't even attempt to fill your bin without one. 'It may seem obvious, but strong bin bags are also essential. If you're using flimsy bin bags that tear regularly, you'll have to clean the bottom of your bin more often to keep on top of smells.' I always use biodegradable recycling bags for my compost bin, such as these Airnex small compost bags designed for a countertop, currently $11 at Amazon. Superbio also sells a range of compostable trash bags, including these 4-gallon drawstring bags, for $21 at Amazon. Other than using bin liners, you could place newspaper in the bottom of your bin to absorb spills. With summer heat comes unwanted flies, who land on rotting rubbish and lay their eggs. And before you have time to swish them away, the eggs have hatched into maggots. Yuck! Emery explains, 'As the temperature increases, it's not unusual for maggots to be found among rubbish as flies become drawn to leftover waste, which rots faster in the heat.' However, she has a solution to clear away the mini-beasts. 'Cleaning your bin with a white vinegar and hot water solution is sufficient to extinguish maggots and their eggs, too,' she advises. Coffee has many uses. Apart from perking us up in the morning with a caffeine hit, this adaptable bean can be used to create a green and healthy lawn and perk up our plants. However, it's a great deodorizer, too, and apart from being reused outside, coffee grounds are a helpful indoor cleaning aid. Emery says coffee grounds can be used to neutralize bad odors, and she recommends, 'Simply sprinkle ground coffee at the base of your bin (underneath the bin bag) to eliminate lingering smells.' Apart from coffee grounds, baking soda works a treat at neutralizing smells. Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali, and when it comes in contact with an acidic odor, it eliminates the smell. It may seem a little extreme, but Emery suggests taking the cold option, 'For items that can't be immediately disposed of, consider freezing them until bin collection day to prevent them decomposing,' she says. What's more, 'the cold temperature will kill any potential fruit flies and eggs,' she adds. But apart from freezing food items that might decompose and cause a stink, be mindful of how you dispose of certain food items. I always rinse through meat and fish packaging before discarding the containers, as lurking bacteria can quickly grow and smell. And, if you have a compost heap in your yard, don't delay in moving any compostable food waste outside. Apart from freezing any particularly pungent food waste, another option is to break your waste down using an electric compost bin. My colleague, Mike Prospero, U.S. Editor, recommends Luma's Electric Kitchen Composter, and gave it a 4-star rating in his review. The benefit of using an electric composter is that is grinds up food scraps and turns them into dried-out compost, and is especially handy if you don't have an outside composter. This countertop compost bin turns food waste into nutrient-rich plant food, pulverizing and reducing the food by up to 90% with 3- 6 hours. You can monitor the progress through a clear top window. It may seem simple, but switching to a more secure kitchen bin with a secure seal, will help eliminate odors. While, it won't work on its own — you'll still need to clean your bin and empty it regularly — it can help prevent odor overspill. And apart from trapping odors, a tightly sealed lid will prevent unwanted pests, such as fruit flies, seeking out the scent and invading your kitchen and beyond. This premium kitchen bin from Joseph Joseph has an odor filter to prevent any nasty spells, and there's a separate food waste compartment with its own lid to keep food scraps extra secure and even allow you to add them to a compost heap. Fruit flies love to gather around bins, but Emery says there are a few fragrant herbs that will do the trick to keep them at bay, 'They dislike basil, mint and lavender,' she says, 'so it's recommended to store the plants close to your bins.' Apart from deterring fruit flies, the fragrant herbs will fill your kitchen with scent and can be added to your dishes for an extra culinary flavor. There's nothing that's going to make your bin stinkier than if it's placed in the hottest spot in your kitchen, with Emery adding that heat will speed up decomposition. For this reason, she recommends keeping your bin in a shaded area of your kitchen, away from direct sunlight, as 'shading helps keep the bin cooler and reduces odor buildup.' Additionally, other areas to avoid placing a bin include those near any heat sources, such as an oven or heating vent.

Mystics rookies Kiki Iriafen, Sonia Citron leaning on each other as they rise to WNBA challenge: 'They belong'
CHICAGO — Before playing together for the Washington Mystics, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen didn't know each other. They only played against each other once in college: Citron, playing for Notre Dame, beat Iriafen's USC Trojans on November 23, 2024, 74-61. Iriafen says she doesn't remember the game, while Citron is happy to remind her who won. But they've put their college rivalries behind them after being selected third (Citron) and fourth (Iriafen) overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Now, they're leaning on each other as they adjust to the league. Advertisement 'Coming in as a rookie, a lottery pick, you're definitely expected to perform. And it can be very daunting, but having somebody by your side that's going through the same thing, makes it a lot easier, because we can talk about what's going on,' Iriafen said. 'And I think Soni and I've done a great job of just being open with each other and just talking about our experiences and our journeys. We're big fans of each other, and I think that's the biggest reason why we're able to have chemistry on the court and just flourish together on the court.' Citron landed in Washington after a standout career at Notre Dame, a school known for producing WNBA-ready guards. Iriafen played three seasons at Stanford before transferring to USC for her senior year. 'I think we're going through similar situations, which is why it's really nice to have somebody like her. We're both rookies, both expected to perform,' Citron said. 'It's been fun just having somebody by your side, like that, that you can just have ups and downs we go through together. The pair has excelled in their first month in the WNBA. Citron has scored at least 10 points in all 12 games so far this season, while Iriafen was named the Rookie of the Month for May, averaging 13.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Advertisement The Mystics are the youngest team in the WNBA, but a big reason why they're boasting the best record among lottery teams is that both Iriafen and Citron came into the league ready to play. (Washington also drafted Kentucky's Georgia Amoore with the No. 6 pick, but she tore her ACL during training camp and will not play this season.) Brittney Sykes, one of the Mystics' most experienced players, spoke effusively about how Iriafen and Citron played during Tuesday's 79-72 win over the Chicago Sky. 'Kiki was in some foul trouble, but that didn't take away from her aggressiveness, and she played smart with fouls. You don't really get to see that with a lot of rookies,' Sykes said after the game. 'Soni came in. Soni does what she does. She's quiet, and then all of a sudden, she hit a pull up, she hit a three. She gets crucial rebounds in the fourth quarter, you know? And she's always in the right spot for a backdoor steal. Like, it amazes me, but that's just credit to them, just trusting and buying into Coach's system and understanding and like, we all have to be a unit.' Though their play has been impressive, making the transition to the WNBA isn't easy, especially so soon after the college season ends. Iriafen and Citron highlighted some of the differences that make the professional ranks a greater challenge. Advertisement 'Obviously, people are stronger and faster, but I've noticed how much smarter the people in the league are, and like in college, you can get away with being more athletic or faster than some," Iriafen said. "But you can't get away with that here, like regardless of if you have an advantage speed-wise, people are so smart and they're able to use little tips and tricks to, you know, bait you into fouls." 'The pace of play is quicker, so the decision making has to be quicker," Citron added. "And I think that's something where it's like, you don't have as much time to just, oh, I can shoot that. You probably have to make decisions quicker or it's gone in like a blink of an eye.' Having rookies who are so eager to learn is a gift for the Mystics' first-year coach, Sydney Johnson, but it also means he needs to keep challenging them. 'We want to continue to put things on their plate,' Johnson said. 'Just like kind of learning, fast growing your knowledge of the league, because I think they've shown talent wise, with God's grace and health, that they belong. But you don't want to stay where you are for too long, you know? I think just increasing your awareness of who you're facing, different styles of play, in-game adjustments. That's the work that we need to do as a coaching staff to help them out.' Advertisement As of Wednesday, the Mystics sit in ninth place in the league, a half-game out of playoff position. The team failed to make the postseason in 2024, making it the first time Washington didn't play in the playoffs since 2012. Citron and Iriafen want to rectify that. But their goals for the season aren't just about records or statistics. As rookies, they know that improvement and growth are key as they look to build on their young careers. 'Just to be a better player at the end of the season than I am right now," Iriafen said, "and just to learn and at the end of the season, be able to say I had a lot of fun and included a lot of joy.'
