West Midlands students' short films get red carpet premiere show

Aspiring young screenwriters across the West Midlands took part in a project aimed at giving students a "hands-on" experience in film students from Wolverhampton, Walsall and Solihull created short films that were showcased at a red carpet premiere event at Millennium Point on Tuesday. The students took part in a screenwriting masterclass before taking on production, filming and acting roles to produce an emotive film, a psychological thriller and a sci-fi Boughey, a City of Wolverhampton College student, said she was "thrilled" with her first assistant director role after being selected from her media course. The project also included students from Walsall Studio School and Solihull College and University Centre. "The creative sector is so important to the region because it's something everyone can get involved in – you don't need to be a genius," said Ms Boughey. "In the future, I'd love to work in the industry, whether it's in live television, as a director or assistant director or a producer - as long as I get to be bossy."The project was set up BBC Studios Drama Productions and West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Careers Hub. 'Real experience for CV' BBC Studios Drama Productions produce shows such as EastEnders, Silent Witness, Father Brown, Shakespeare & Hathaway, Casualty and Pobol y Spruce, curriculum manager at the college, added: "We were delighted to give students the opportunity to work on real productions alongside experienced industry professionals."The project is a part of modern work experience, a pilot scheme being rolled out by The Careers & Enterprise Company, the national body for careers Kendall, student at Walsall Studio School, said the project provided her with real experience to put on her CV."Getting involved has made me think about my career in a different way - I was thinking of being a director but this project helped me learn about other job roles in the creative side of film production", she said. Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker, visited Millennium Point to watch the films and congratulate spoke of the importance of young people taking part in "practical and useful work experience"."The work of these aspiring young screenwriters is truly inspirational," Parker said. "This course's innovative approach to work experience gives young people a real-world taste of what it is like to work in the creative sector."This is how we can equip them with the skills and insight they need to secure meaningful work and enjoy fulfilling careers." Award for Wolverhampton student partially blinded in car crash

A student who was left in a coma and partially blinded by a car accident has won a national award for continuing her college education despite life-changing Clair was seriously hurt while driving with friends shortly after joining City of Wolverhampton College in 2022 to study health and social then 17-year-old lost sight in one eye and suffered short-term memory loss, but returned to college a year "incredible" student has been rewarded for her resilience as the Against All Odds winner in the 2025 NCFE Aspiration Awards. Ms Clair said she recovered in hospital for more than two months, which left her "really depressed"."I lost my sight in my left eye and I got a brain injury," she said. "Having one eye is really bad; it makes it so hard every day because I struggle to see and I knock into people all the time. "And [with] the brain injury, my memory is so bad, and I get so confused."The student was inspired by the nurses who looked after her and is now keen to support others with brain injuries."I was like 'they are amazing I would love to do this job'," she said."Car accidents are a big thing [but] you can't let it stop you," she added. 'She's just incredible' Ms Clair attends weekly sessions with brain injury charity Headway, which works with the college to support her in overcoming cognitive function of Wolverhampton College lecturer Delia Whitworth said the student was "obviously very traumatised" on her return, but had been determined to thrive."Even getting out of bed in the morning to get to college was a really big ask for her," she said."But she's just incredible. First stage of city library improvements completed

The first stage of improvements to enhance public facilities at Wolverhampton's Central Library has been completed. The 1970s extension to the back of the library has been changed, providing two new first-floor offices, ground floor space for book deliveries, sorting and collections and other facilities. Adult Education Wolverhampton's Alan Garner Building on Old Hall Street is set to be refurbished and remodelled and there are plans to create a two-storey building to connect it to Central Library's 1930s extension. Work on restoring the front of the building and the roof of the Grade II*-listed library began in November. The improved facilities will sit alongside a new facility for City of Wolverhampton College currently being built on the site of the college's former Metro One campus and land on the corner of Garrick Street and Bilston Street. The first stage of improvements at the central library was finished as part of the £61m City Learning Quarter programme. Council cabinet member for city development, jobs and skills Chris Burden said changes to the library and adult education facilities were "integral to our City Learning Quarter vision alongside the new college campus being developed". "Together they will provide state-of-the-art facilities in the city centre and improve life chances for people of all ages through learning, apprenticeship and employment offers. "The restoration and development of the Grade II*-listed library and Adult Education building will enhance the offer for current users of these services and attract new users." Central Library and Adult Education Wolverhampton are continuing to operate during work, which is expected to be completed during the winter.
