Details as first brass concert to take place in town park bandstand
A renowned brass band is set to take to the bandstand in the town park this weekend as the inaugural concert in a series to take place across the summer. Glastonbury Brass Band will take to the town park bandstand this Sunday, July 20, from 2pm to 4pm for the inaugural concert in the Trowbridge Bandstand Sessions, The free event is open to all, with visitors encouraged to bring picnics and seating with them, and that they are also welcome to bring alcoholic refreshments to relax and take in the musical offering. This Sunday's event will mark the first in what is to be a series of events that will take place across the summer. The event is being hosted by the Civic Centre, but has been chiefly organised by town councillor James Ward OBE, who explained that one of his ambitions as a town councillor is to broaden the musical offering for Trowbridge residents. Cllr Ward said: 'When I was elected on May 1, one thing I wanted to do was for the bandstand to be properly put back into use for brass bands to perform. I want a series of concerts where people can come and sit, bring afternoon tea for two slots of 45 minutes. 'This has not happened for a very long time, but I want bands for Trowbridge bandstand, so I reached out and got replies. As a result of which, we ended up with five concerts across the summer. 'This is for people of Trowbridge, so come along and support it. It's the beginning of a yearly event of summer concerts, which will feature brass bands and other ensembles. For those interested, you should bring a picnic, prosecco, as there's no ban on alcohol in the town park. People should bring a deck chair or something to sit on. 'As for future events, there's another one in August. Then we've got Proms in the park on September 20, featuring Filton Brass Band. They are both exceptionally good bands. 'I want this every year with a series of concerts throughout the summer, which will be a series of performances. 'This is important because the park needs to be properly used, we have a bandstand which gives a platform for live music. It's important we get culture and the arts back into Trowbridge. 'I suppose it's taking us back to the times when families and people could come and sit and listen to something very different from what they'll experience during the week. It's proper live music, and this is the start of bringing live music back to the park. 'The important thing here is the bands will be sitting in the bandstand, which has exceptionally good acoustic. 'This is about helping to rebuild Trowbridge, which I want to do, and this is a way of starting that. 'As it develops, in years to come, I want us to be able to provide afternoon tea in the park, so they can come and listen. I will be working with the Civic Centre in order to try and achieve that for next year. 'It's a free event for anybody who wants to come and listen 'People have said to me that it's fantastic that the stand is going to be used. We've been waiting for this for far too long and it's about time. This is the beginning of what I want it to be.'

WATCH: Old sea wall removed as Muizenberg's heritage-conscious upgrade unfolds
The City of Cape Town's upgrades to Muizenberg's beachfront infrastructure are well underway - with the old seawall being carefully dismantled. Its original sandstone blocks are to be preserved for reuse in the new design unfolding in one of False Bay's most popular beachfronts. As part of the City's ambitious R413 million investment into coastal infrastructure projects, the multi-phase upgrade of the Muizenberg beachfront - a much-loved destination for surfers, families and tourists alike began earlier in February. It is set for completion by the end of 2026 and aims to address ageing infrastructure while improving accessibility, safety and the overall visitor experience. Beachfront revamps are also underway in Strand, Small Bay, Monwabisi, Table View, Miller's Point, Soetwater, Kogel Bay, Macassar, Zandwolf, Mouille Point and Granger Bay. As the Muizenberg project unfolds, the newly upgraded parking area near the Civic Centre is set to reopen on 1 August 2025. "The project is moving along well, despite the rainy weather. I know our surfing community will be very excited to hear this," says the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews. "Next is the removal of sections of the existing seawall at Surfer's Corner. These original sandstone rocks that make up the wall will be stored and later assessed for incorporation into the new design, as they are key to the Corner's heritage. The next community meeting is on 20 August 2025, at 17:30, at the Zandvlei Lookout. I encourage local residents and business owners to attend to get the latest updates about the project timelines and progress,' said Andrews. What's being upgraded at Muizenberg? Designed with input from local communities and coastal engineers, the upgrade balances modern climate-resilient design with Muizenberg's distinct heritage character. Here's what's included in the transformation: New stepped revetment seawall with a 3m-wide promenade for improved coastal protection Universal beach access ramp and upgraded pathways Redesigned parking areas with lighting, clay paving, and pedestrian-friendly layouts (parking remains free) Upgraded ablution block, set back from the beach and built with universal access, family change rooms, and mosaic art New pergola, rebuilt further inland in its original design Modernised playground with a kelp forest theme and inclusive play equipment Enhanced forecourt at Muizenberg Station with accessible ramps and special needs parking Soft landscaping using indigenous plants; wind-resistant design with no trees Relocated beach huts to the central plaza to act as windbreaks Improved stormwater and sewer infrastructure Support for local NGOs and traders, including a new Waves for Change building and a retained Shark Spotters site

Canada Games torch relay passes through Corner Brook on Canada Day
While Canada Day and Memorial Day are always a shared occasion in Newfoundland and Labrador, this year's ceremonies in Corner Brook also honoured the upcoming Canada Games, as the torch relay passed through the city on Tuesday. "I love this," said Vernon Wells, one of the eight torchbearers in Corner Brook. "This is very special for me. I was the mascot for the '99 Canada Games here, and it brings back a lot of memories." In Corner Brook, the torch made its way to the Civic Centre, which was originally built for the 1999 Canada Winter Games. "It gives you a feeling of pride, for the community and for all of the island and rest of Canada," said Wells. "And it just feels close to the heart." Meanwhile, the CEO of the Canada Games Host Society said it was a great day to be celebrating the games in Corner Brook. Karen Sherriffs said the event in Corner Brook was just one of 15 stops on their torch relay, which kicked off late last week. "The excitement that's there is just so special to see, and it's just been really overwhelming to see the support we've gotten," Sherriffs said, reflecting on the torch's journey so far from Port aux Basques.
