Weather alert for Northland: Risk of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms
Heavy rain in April caused slips that twice closed SH1 over Mangamuka Gorge, south of Kaitāia. Now Northlanders are being urged to prepare for heavy rain again. Stormy weather is on the way tonight for Te Tai Tokerau, with Civil Defence Northland urging people to drive with extra care and stay up-to-date with forecasts. MetService NZ has issued two alerts for Northland – a Heavy Rain Watch and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch – from 5pm on Monday to around 6am Tuesday. The severe weather is part of a front expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to western parts of the North Island, from Taranaki northwards. The Heavy Rain Watch for Northland warns of periods of heavy rain with possible downpours. There is a moderate chance of this upgrading to an orange Heavy Rain Warning. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch warns of possible localised downpours, with rainfall rates of 25mm/h to 40mm/h.

Weather: Northland warned to brace for more heavy rain, gale-force winds
Northlanders are being warned to brace for heavy rain, gale-force winds and the possibility of severe thunderstorms forecast for Friday. The warning from MetService on Thursday morning comes after the region suffered a record-breaking wet April, which led to localised flooding and slips. Civil Defence Northland is urging people to be prepared as an active front, accompanied by gale northeasterlies, is forecast to move over the upper North Island on Friday, bringing heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms to Northland. 'So, if you're not already, take some time today to check you're prepared for bad weather,' the organisation advised on social media. MetService has issued an orange Heavy Rain Warning for all of Northland, for Friday 3am to 5pm, saying 80mm to 120mm of rain should be expected, with possibly up to 150mm in parts of the region.

Drivers brace for heavy rain, thunderstorms in Auckland, Northland
'The weather system is very slow-moving so it'll hang around between Auckland and Northland today with a definite possibility of thunderstorms tomorrow,' he said. Civil Defence Northland has updated its online alerts, advising residents to take care while driving and look out for threatening weather. 'Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas ... and may also lead to slips,' it warned. 'There is a lot of uncertainty with respect to the amounts and distribution of significant heavy rain in Northland,' MetService warned, noting possibilities of flash flooding, surface flooding and challenging driving visibility in heavy rain. The latest MetService thunderstorm risk suggests a moderate threat of thunderstorms in the Far North, north of Kaitāia to Bay of Islands, as well as heavy rain with intensities of 10-25mm per hour. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms spreading south over Northland, reaching Dargaville to Whangārei around midnight. There is also a low risk of thunderstorms over Auckland and the northern Coromandel Peninsula. MetService meteorologist Sarah Haddon said warm, moist air is being pulled across the country by a low-pressure system in the north Tasman Sea. The top of the North Island was battered as Cyclone Tam slowly rolled over the country last week.
