Ludhiana: Gunshot fired at witness' home ahead of testimony

The Jawahar Nagar locality witnessed a tense morning on Tuesday following a shooting incident at the home of a key witness in the 2020 murder case of hotelier Harjinder Singh Jindi. As many as two unidentified men on a scooter reportedly fired a gunshot at the residence of Kanwaljit Kumar in Jawahar Nagar. The incident, which is suspected to be an attempt to intimidate the witness before his court testimony on July 22, has raised serious concerns about witness security. Police investigating the spot where the firing incident took place in Ludhiana's Jawahar Nagar on Tuesday. (HT Photo) According to the police, the firing occurred around 1.45 am. The bullet struck the main gate of Kumar's residence and a .32 bore shell was recovered from the scene. CCTV footage from the vicinity captured the assailants' faces, who have since been identified as Manya and Varun, residents of the same area. Their associate, Aman Sharma, is also accused of conducting a recce of the house prior to the incident. ACP (Civil Lines) Guriqbal Singh confirmed the involvement of the three suspects and stated that a case has been registered against them. 'Manya was the one who fired the shot while riding the scooter. Aman Sharma assisted in the planning. We will arrest them soon,' said the ACP. Kanwaljit Kumar, the victim, firmly believes the attack is linked to the murder of his brother, Harjinder Singh Jindi, who was gunned down in the Jawahar Nagar market in January 2020. The main accused in that case, notorious criminal Sukhwinder Singh alias Moni, is currently lodged in jail. Kumar claimed that Moni has been sending threats through his aides to stop him from testifying. 'I won't be intimidated,' Kumar asserted. 'The police have assured me of protection on the court date.' Kumar's son, Naveen, also revealed that the same accused had earlier hurled glass bottles at their home during New Year celebrations, but no complaint was filed after the accused's family intervened and apologised. Police say the motive appears clear but will be confirmed after the suspects are apprehended.

Psychiatrist Jawarkar dies by suicide in Akola

Akola: Leading psychiatrist Dr Prashant Jawarkar, associated with 'Sanmitra Hospital', died by suicide at his residence in New Tapadia Nagar on Saturday. According to preliminary information, he injected some poisonous substance to end his life. The news has sent shockwaves through Akola's medical and social circles, as Dr Jawarkar was known for counseling thousands suffering from psychological distress. Dr Jawarkar is survived by wife Vandana Jawarkar, a 14-year-old son Kartik, and a daughter studying in Pune. Sources said that his wife is currently undergoing treatment at City Hospital due to severe mental shock. Earlier in the day, Dr Jawarkar attended his routine duties at Sanmitra Hospital. He reportedly handed over the medical store keys to the hospital staff telling them that he would be back from home shortly. Moments later, he took the fatal step at his residence. Civil Lines police registered an accidental death report (ADR). No suicide note has been recovered, and a preliminary scan of his mobile phone yielded no significant clues. His body was taken to his native place in Amravati district for the last rites. Police sources said Dr Jawarkar had previously attempted suicide in 2022. A case under IPC Section 309 (attempt to suicide) was registered then and a charge sheet was submitted to the court. While he survived that incident, this time the act proved fatal. Investigators are now examining all possible motives, as no conclusive reason has yet emerged. The incident has reignited debates around the stress faced by medical professionals, particularly those working in mental health. Senior psychiatrist Dr Lad said, "When caregivers themselves succumb to psychological pressure, it forces us to introspect on the gaps in our support systems. Doctors and counselors are human too—they face stress and deserve the same attention to mental well-being as their patients. "

Nagpur hottest in Maharashtra at 44.2°C, rain brings brief respite

1 2 Nagpur: The city sizzled under extreme heat on Monday, as the maximum temperature soared to 44.2°C, the highest in Maharashtra for the day. However, the intense afternoon heat later gave way to patchy rainfall in parts of Nagpur, offering brief respite. Overall, the mood remained one of fatigue, sweat and confusion, as June weather continues to play truant. Monsoon was officially declared to have arrived in Vidarbha over two weeks ago, but rains have been largely missing since the beginning of June. For most part of Monday, it felt more like peak May, with hot winds, high UV, and very little cloud cover. "The heat was unbearable. It didn't feel like June at all," said Sujata Borkar, a working professional from Civil Lines. The minimum temperature of 29.2°C meant the discomfort lingered even into the night. The humidity level was 57% in the morning and 33% in the evening, with minimal wind movement. By late evening, however, light rainfall (0.6 mm) was reported in some localities, not enough to cool down the city but still welcomed by all. While there was only a drizzle in Nagpur, Chandrapur recorded 27.4 mm rainfall — the highest in Vidarbha for the day — helping bring its temperature down to 40.2°C. This isn't the first time Nagpur experienced extreme June heat and inconsistent rainfall. Historical data from the last 10 years shows that temperatures above 43°C in June are fairly common. For instance, the city recorded 46.5°C in 2015, 47.2°C in 2019, and 45.4°C in 2024. Monthly rainfall has varied wildly, from 293.5 mm in 2018 to just 72.6 mm in 2019. This June seems headed toward another dry spell unless there is monsoon revival. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) prediction, the monsoon has temporarily stalled and rains will start lashing the region not before June 14. "This kind of fluctuating pattern is typical of Nagpur's June climate. The city sees sharp heat peaks and then sudden rains. It's what makes forecasting here especially tricky," said a senior IMD official. Forecasts suggest isolated rainfall activity may return mid-week, but no widespread showers are expected just yet. The maximum temperature is most likely to remain around the 40°C mark. # Warning forecast for Vidarbha June 10: Yellow alert for thunderstorm (40-50 kmph) in Nagpur division; Amravati division to remain dry June 11: Yellow alert for thunderstorm in Vidarbha (all districts), but only at isolated places June 12 and 13: Yellow alert for thunderstorm (40-50 kmph) in Vidarbha (all districts), but only at isolated places June 14: Monsoon rainfall activity might resume in blocks, including Nagpur
