As a working mum Claire Love presumed she was waking up with headaches at night because her life was so full-on. 'I was getting very little sleep anyway, so I just put it down to the stress of it all,' says Claire, 41, a special needs school assistant from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, who is married to business systems manager Mat, 42, and has two sons Archie, 11, and Jack, nine, both with special needs.

Think your tumble dryer is the biggest energy drain in your home? Think again

The most expensive appliance to run in your home has been revealed–and if you think it's your tumble dryer, think again! A new analysis by Irish energy provider Energia has revealed the true cost of running household appliances on a day-to-day basis, and it's safe to say that many will be left surprised. While we have all been told before that it's best to avoid using the tumble dryer due to the cost of running it for a couple of hours, Energia has confirmed that if you're looking to find out which appliance is emptying your pockets, you've got the wrong culprit. According to the energy provider, taking a ten-minute shower could cost you up to €0.59 per day, with a total daily running cost of €3.39. According to the energy provider, taking a ten-minute shower could cost you up to €0.59 per day, with a total daily running cost of €3.39. In second place, the immersion heater remains one of the most expensive appliances to run in the home, with one hour of use costing up to €1.13. In joint third place is the tumble dryer with a one-hour cycle, also costing up to €0.94. Pic: EliIn third place is the electric heater, with a cost of up to €0.94 an hour. Rounding out the top five, the hair dryer incurs running costs of up to €0.81 per hour, with an average 20-minute use costing €0.27. Commenting on the analysis, energy expert Claire Love from Energia said that many of us in Ireland won't think twice about taking a nice, long shower in the morning or evening. Most of us love a long, hot shower in the morning before we head out into the cold. Pic: Getty Images 'Most of us don't think twice about taking that extra-long hot shower on a cold morning, but some of our energy habits are costing us,' she said. 'Aside from the usual suspects of tumble dryers and dishwashers, even using the oven for an hour can add up over time, so looking at ways you can cut that time down is crucial.' A number of other popular household appliances that many of us simply cannot live without also made the list, including hair dryers, kettles, coffee machines, and the coveted air fryer, which can also significantly increase your energy bill. Pic: Getty Images The bottom of the list includes several items that use minimal energy, with gamers and film lovers being glad to hear that televisions, playstations and laptops all cost less than €0.10 to run. However, Claire added that aside from the 'usual suspects' such as the tumble dryer and dishwasher, which we've all been warned about, using your oven for an hour can rack up a hefty bill when calculated over one month or two. 'Not only can we all be more vigilant with our energy usage, but it's important we track what's contributing to our consumption by keeping an eye on the energy insights available with a smart plan.'
