SMC, Health Ministry step up efforts after malaria detected in Sibu Jaya

SMC councillors during their monthly meeting earlier today. SIBU (June 25): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will work together with the Ministry of Health (MoH) to curb the spread of malaria and dengue, following the recent detection of malaria cases in the Townvilla B area in Sibu Jaya on June 13. Council chairman Clarence Ting said the initiative aims to reinforce monitoring and preventive measures to ensure the disease does not re-emerge. 'Although Malaysia has successfully eradicated malaria, it is crucial that we continue to implement stringent efforts,' he said during the full council meeting earlier today. Ting noted that malaria currently falls under the jurisdiction of the MoH but emphasised the importance of local authorities, including municipal councillors, in supporting public health measures. He also called for stronger cooperation with the Health Ministry, stressing the importance of adherence to enforcement protocols, which have become more stringent. 'We must ensure every action is followed through with proper monitoring. Weaknesses in follow-up procedures by the council's enforcement team need to be addressed and improved,' he added. On Tuesday, the Sibu Divisional Health Office announced that it would conduct active case detection (ACD) for malaria in the Townvilla B area of Sibu Jaya, scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday. This involves the collection of blood samples for laboratory analysis using the Blood Film for Malaria Parasite method, a mandatory screening process that will continue until all cases are cleared. SIBU (June 15): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting has called on all council staff to give their full support to the acting secretary Sait Enggang, who steps into the role following the retirement of former secretary Yong Ing Chu. Ting emphasized that such cooperation is vital to maintain SMC's strong performance in service delivery and in meeting public expectations. 'I would like to welcome our new acting secretary, with whom we will be working very closely. This is particularly important as SMC undergoes a leadership transition,' said Ting during the council's 'Ngiling Bidai' ceremony, held at Permai Lake Garden Food Court on Saturday night. 'I hope everyone will extend the same support to Encik Sait as you did to Mr Yong. Without strong teamwork, we won't be able to perform as effectively,' he told the staff present at the gathering. Ting also expressed his hope that the gathering would strengthen the bond among staff and reignite their motivation to serve the people with dedication and integrity. He added that the ngiling bidai ceremony symbolised the council's unity, inclusivity, and deep appreciation for cultural heritage. Ting also conveyed his gratitude to Councillor Augustine Merikan, who chaired the event's organising committee, along with the entire organising team for their efforts in making the event a success. SMC chairman raises alarm over surge in dog bite cases in Sibu

Quoting data from the Ministry of Health (KKM), Ting revealed that the majority of the dog bites were inflicted by pet dogs owned by individuals, not strays. 'According to KKM's data, there were 216 cases of dog bites involving pets owned by individuals, whereas stray dogs were responsible for 74 cases in April. 'I am deeply concerned with the high number of dog bites incidents here. These are recorded cases when victims sought treatments in hospital or clinics. 'What about those that did not seek treatment? So, the number of incidents may be higher,' Ting told reporters after SMC's full council meeting today. He further pointed out that the statistics translate to an average of 10 people bitten by dogs every day. 'On average, about 10 persons got bitten by dogs every single day. This is unacceptable. This is a very big concern,' he cautioned. In this regard, Ting urged the public to continue working with the council to reduce the number of dog bites. 'You should confine your pet dogs to your house compound. If you need to let it out, ensure your canine is on a leash.' Additionally, he explained that in Sarawak, the enforcement of responsible dog ownership is governed mainly by local authority by-laws under the Local Authorities Ordinance 1996 and supported by public health regulations. 'The Sibu Municipal Council (Licensing of Dogs) By-Laws contains clauses that: limit number of dogs per household (especially in urban areas), require dogs to be confined within the owner's compound and penalize owners of dogs causing nuisance or injury.'
