Midwife behind botched circumcision on 10-year-old boy in Tondo arrested
The midwife who conducted a fatal circumcision operation on a 10-year-old in Tondo last May was arrested and was presented to the public on Monday alongside the most wanted suspects of Manila. Suspect Teresita Clarin was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and illegal practice of medicine. Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso presented Clarin and three other suspects for various cases. Clarin looked down when she was called forward by Domagoso. 'Sagutin mo na lang sa mata ng batas ha? I hope maging takdang aral sa'yo 'yan,' said Domagoso. (Just answer in the eyes of the law, okay? I hope this will be a lesson to you.) 'Hindi na po ako…Hindi na po ako….', she said. (I won't do it…I won't do it…) 'Naiintindihan kita, kaya lang ito yung pamilya,' Domagoso replied as he pointed to the 10-year-old victim's mother who was also present. (I understand you, but the family is here.) 'Kayo na ang bahala, basta ito ay arestado na. Kung gusto niyo makamit ang hustisya, nasa inyo na po 'yun,' the mayor told the victim's mother. (Now that she's arrested, it's now up to you what to do next. If you want to achieve justice, it's now up to you.) Domagoso went to the victim's mother to comfort her when she became upset after seeing the suspect. 'Nakakalungkot, siyempre alam mo, katulad nito, senior citizen. Mahal na mahal ko ang mga 'yan. But what can we do? Sana maging takdang aral 'yan sa iba. I feel bad also for the victim and the family,' said Domagoso. (It's saddening, because in this case the suspect is a senior citizen. My heart goes to the elderly people there. But what can we do? I hope this will serve as a lesson for others. I feel bas also for the victim and the family.) The suspect was taken to the Manila Police District but was immediately released amid the pending autopsy of the victim. The suspect was also arrested in 2023 by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group after using the name and license number of a legitimate doctor whom she had worked with over 20 years ago. But she was later released on bail. The barangay also said the suspect does not have any permit to operate her lying-in clinic where the circumcision was performed. It was also reported that the victim was administered anesthesia—reportedly in the amount of 20cc, as per the clinic staff. According to the police's autopsy report, a brain hemorrhage possibly resulting from anesthesia caused the boy's death. The other suspects arrested and presented were Florencio Flores for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act, Jonas Bayubay for crime of frustrated murder, and Eddie Boy Savellano for qualified rape and acts of lasciviousness. — RF, GMA Integrated News

‘Lucky loser' Solana Sierra loses in round of 16 but her racket and clothing to be kept in Wimbledon museum for her unique feat
The 'lucky loser' Solana Sierra, who had to change hotels at least four times as her fortunes kept rising at the Wimbledon extending her stay, has finally lost in the round of 16. She nearly didn't make it to the main draw as she had lost in the qualifying game, but when the German Greet Minnen withdrew from the tournament, Sierra's chance came. The 21-year-old was told she is the 'lucky loser' and has qualified but has to be on court in 'one hour'. She kept winning her games in every round, and had to change hotels accordingly to adapt to her progress. The dream run finally ended at the hands of the German Laura Siegemund 2-6, 3-6 at the weekend. The Argentine media has been breathlessly covering her progress, sharing stories about the frequent hotel changes to any tidbits from her during the progress. It was a dream run indeed. The Argentine newspaper Clarin reported that Wimbledon officials made a special request to her, asking her to leave the racket and clothing she wore in her matches to be kept on display at the Wimbledon museum as she was the first 'lucky loser' to reach the round of 16 of the women's singles in the Open Era. Siegemund does it in straight sets 👊 Laura Siegemund defeats Solana Sierra 6-3, 6-2 to advance to her first ever #Wimbledon quarter-finals 👏 — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 6, 2025 ''I'm a little sad. I really wanted to keep moving forward, to keep winning, but I think it's been a very positive two weeks for me. It's been a dream, honestly,' Sierra admitted in an interview with ESPN. 'I think if you had asked me before qualifying started, I wouldn't have imagined I'd be in the second week, so I'm super happy about that.' Her mother has been with her at the Wimbledon, though she did wish for her father too had been present to witness the dream run. 'Maybe having my dad here would be very special. They've been my pillars since I was little and have always supported me,' she had told Clarin at the end of her penultimate game. 'And for him to see me here, at this stage of a Grand Slam, would be very special for me.' She also spoke about her idol Serena Williams. 'I always say that when I was little, I watched Serena Williams a lot, and she's the one I remember most from watching on TV. And now, it's Sabalenka I like the most.' Clarin summed up the journey with this: 'Although she wanted to follow in the footsteps of Paola Suárez , the last Argentine to reach the quarterfinals on the London grass in 2004, having reached this stage ensures that she will climb about 35 places in the WTA ranking , to 66th (she will enter the main draw of the US Open, for example),and a prize of 327,000 dollars , double what she had earned up to this point in her entire career, where she had performed in just two Grand Slam main draws (US Open 2024 and Roland Garros 2025).'

Maradona trial on brink of COLLAPSE after glam judge appears in glitzy doc about ongoing case over football icon's death
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE trial of late Argentine football superstar Diego Maradona's medical team is on the brink of collapse after a glam judge appeared in a glitzy documentary about the ongoing case. Julieta Makintach - dubbed the "judge of God" - recused herself after a trailer for the six-part mini-series was embarrassingly played to the court. The shocking preview begins with Makintach strutting through the entrance of what seems to be a court house in high heels as she takes the lift to the upper floors. News broadcasts of footy legend Maradona's death are also featured in the trailer, as well as an excerpt of an emergency call asking for an ambulance. It concludes with Makintach preparing documents at a desk. The bizarre footage suggests unauthorised recordings were shot inside the courtroom, which constitutes a breach of judicial rules. According to a script, the mini-series would follow Makintach as she "reconstructs the death of Maradona and certain painful milestones of his life related to abandonment." The trailer preview was one of the various pieces of evidence seized by cops in raids last week as the trail was suspended. Tuesday's hearing was marked by insults, recriminations, shouting and tears. In a bitter exchange, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Makintach of behaving "like an actress and not a judge." He said: "[Makintach] spoke about Maradona, the trial, how it was unfolding. Diego Maradona's daughter fights back tears as she says family live in fear of mafia ahead of trial into his death "She has been completely influenced by her leading role, by the centrality of her figure. "She lied to our faces for three months. I demand that the court recuse judge Makintach." As the trailer was played, defence lawyer Rodolfo Baque jumped out of his chair to shout "trash" at the judge. The late footballer's daughter Gianinna Maradona tried to calm him before she and Maradona's former partner, Veronica Ojeda, both began to sob. Makintach sat with her head bowed, biting her lip and eventually said she had "no choice" but to recuse herself as one of the case's three justices. Her removal is an embarrassment for Argentina's judicial system and could yet derail a trial being watched by football fans worldwide. Gianinna Maradona has claimed her father was kept in "a dark, ugly and lonely" place and that his carers were more interested in money than his welfare. The court will decide on Thursday whether the trial will go ahead or be scrapped and then restarted. Some of the plaintiffs have called for a new trial, saying they felt proceedings have been tainted by scandal. The lawyer for Maradona's ex-partner Ojeda said that "everyone now feels that this is compromised," adding that it's "healthiest to start over from scratch". Glam Makintach denied being paid for the documentary and said that she had given "an interview to a childhood friend about the justice system". Makintach added: "That material was raw, it was intimate. It was on a Sunday at 5pm. Does that give it the label of forbidden, hidden, illicit?" According to Argentinian media, prosecutor Ferrari said: "On Sunday March 9, before the trial began, Makintach entered the building with six people. "And if there is a script and a trailer, it wasn't just an interview. "There were photos, footage. There was no authorisation for this irregular entry. "All the aggravating circumstances clearly exist that demonstrate the loss of independence and impartiality of the member summoned to this trial."
