CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fire crews are battling a brush fire in Carlsbad that broke out Thursday afternoon. The fire, dubbed the 'Claro Fire,' was reported around 2:44 p.m. in the area of Corte Claro and Paseo Encino, sending a large plume of smoke into the air, as captured by one nearby resident. As of 4 p.m., flames have burned through 40 acres in a canyon behind homes on the edge of the city and neighboring San Marcos, according to Cal Fire. Crews on the ground say it is moving at a moderate rate of spread, although it is currently considered an immediate threat to life and property, per the county's emergency alert system. Two other neighborhoods in the area of San Elijo Hills have also been placed under evacuation warnings. The warning is bounded by SD Aqueduct Service Road in the east, San Elijo Road in the south and Rancho Santa Fe Road in the west. A map of the impacted area from the Claro Fire can be found below. A temporary evacuation point has been established at Stagecoach Park, located at 3420 Camino De Los Coches. The Carlsbad Police Department is urging people to avoid the area where fire crews are responding. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
