Dodgers Targeting Guardians' All-Star Closer to Bolster Bullpen: Report

Dodgers Targeting Guardians' All-Star Closer to Bolster Bullpen: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers are bona fide World Series favorites due to their top-tier offense and league-leading comeback wins. They do not know how to lose, but when they do, it is due to two things: starting pitching and the bullpen. With Tyler Glasnow already back on the mound and Blake Snell expected to return soon, All-Star caliber reinforcements are not returning to fortify their bullpen. After pouring over $107 million into the pen this offseason, Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, is again scouring the relief pitcher market in hopes of adding to an already stacked, yet pivotally flawed roster. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Dodgers have had trade talks with the Cleveland Guardians about closer Emmanuel Clase. Clase, a three-time All-Star, struggled to begin the season butbounced back recentlys. Since late June, he has converted 15 of his 17 save opportunities and lowered his ERA to 2.90 in the same span. Inserting him into the back of Los Angeles' bullpen would make it more dangerous come the postseaso ando allow current closer Tanner Scott to move into a less stressful eight-inning role. Clase is also under contract through 2026 with a $10 million club option in 2027 and 2028. The Dodgers would likely pick up both extra years of control, knowing the cheap price tag, and in return, have one of the league's most dominant closers under 31 throughout his time with the club. According to Nightengale, there is one hiccup to the Dodgers' interest in Clase as the Guardians are telling teams they plan to keep the closer. Whether that is a negotiation tactic remains to be seen, but either way, Los Angeles will have to offer a massive haul to acquire Clase's services. The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to defend their World Series championship, and after enduring many injuries to their bullpen this season, are looking for reinforcements at the deadline. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Dodgers have been inquiring about Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase. Photo byThe Guardians aren't currently looking to trade Clase as reported by Nightengale in the same column. But if anyone has the stack of chips to change their mind, it would be the Dodgers. Clase is one of the league's premier closers and has led the American League in saves the past three seasons, including two seasons where he led all of Major League Baseball. Striking out one batter per inning this season, Clase has closed out 21 games for the Guardians and leads all relievers in appearances as of Monday. The Dodgers are looking for depth in their bullpen after losing Evan Phillips to Tommy John surgery, along with Blake Treinen and Michael Kopech currently injured. The Dodgers are expected to be active in the bullpen market during the trade deadline to fill those holes. While the Guardians aren't actively looking to move on from Clase, the Dodgers are staying in contact in case they can change their mind. Clase is under team control through 2028 and is one of the few high-end closers that could be on the market this season. If the Dodgers are unable to make a deal with Cleveland, there are other options on the market, but many teams are unsure of their path leading up to the trade deadline. MLB Insider Suggests Mets Pair Edwin Diaz With Emmanuel Clase

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets need to add pitching ahead of the trade deadline, plain and simple. Their pitching staff hasn't been good enough to win a World Series, which is the ultimate goal, especially after spending upward of $800 million in the offseason. With just over a week before the trade deadline, it should be expected to see the Mets floated around in a lot of rumors, especially those for pitchers. ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Mets as the best fit in a potential trade that would bring Cleveland Guardians superstar closer Emmanuel Clase to the Big Apple. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 22: Emmanuel Clase #48 of the Cleveland Guardians pitching in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on June 22, 2025 in Sacramento, California. Justine Willard/Athletics/Getty Images "Clase was nearly unhittable last season, but his numbers have regressed this year," Passan wrote. "He has issued more walks and gotten fewer ground balls while allowing more damage on his cutter that averages 99 mph -- in part due to more center-cut locations. Under contract for less than $30 million through 2028, he would bring a big return to Cleveland." The Mets have the potential to bring Clase to New York and pair him with star closer Edwin Diaz at the backend of games. This duo, when healthy and clicking, could be the best one-two punch of relievers in baseball history. Both guys have an argument to be the best closer in the league right now, and both have an argument to be the most dominant of this era. Now, this would be quite an expensive deal for New York to pull off, but it's something the front office can afford to do. The Mets can cut ties with multiple top prospects in order to pluck Clase from Cleveland. If the Guardians are considering trading Clase, they'll likely receive an offer from the loaded Mets. Emmanuel Clase To Dodgers? LA Tabbed 'Best Fit' In Blockbuster Trade

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers are bound to be some of the more aggressive buyers at the trade deadline this season. Los Angeles has struggled with injuries, but that was the case last season, too, and the front office was able to build a team that went and won the World Series. The front office will be tasked with the same thing this year. ESPN's Jeff Passan recently suggested the Dodgers could be a good fit in a trade for the Cleveland Guardians' star closer Emmanuel Clase ahead of the trade deadline. CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 18: Emmanuel Clase #48 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrates the team's 8-6 win over the Athletics at Progressive Field on July 18, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. Under contract for less than $30 million through 2028, he would bring a big return to Cleveland." The Dodgers could be a solid fit for Clase, and they have the prospect capital it would take to land the star. First of all, the Guardians shouldn't shop Clase. He has a few more years of affordable team control on his contract and has been one of the best closers in baseball for years. Rather than shipping him off, the Guardians should continue to try to win with him. But the Dodgers could poach him from Cleveland if the front office is open to trading him. The Guardians would likely want to land older prospects who are big league-ready. Los Angeles could use a combination of Dalton Rushing, Bobby Miller, James Outman, and other prospects to bring Clase to town. At the end of the day, this idea depends on how willing the Guardians are to shop their star pitcher. If they want to hit a bit of a reset, the Dodgers have a real chance to land the star. Wild Dodgers trade idea cuts ties with Andy Pages for 3-time All-Star closer

The Los Angeles Dodgers do not have many holes on their roster, but perhaps they could use a more consistent closer. The team paid Tanner Scott in the offseason, but he has had his fair share of struggles. The Dodgers gave Scott a four-year, $72 million deal in free agency. He had established himself as a solid closer for the Miami Marlins before he was traded to the San Diego Padres. Last season, he had 22 saves and a 1.75 ERA. This season, his ERA is at 3.86, but he does have 18 saves, leading the Dodgers. While he has been the team's primary closer, Scott is a versatile reliever, allowing Dave Roberts to deploy him in any high-leverage situation. However, the results have not lived up to expectations so far. He has blown six saves on the season, and the Dodgers could want to get another option besides him or Kirby Yates to close games. The Athletic's Jim Bowden, while discussing what the Cleveland Guardians could get in return for Emmanuel Clase, suggested the Guardians "offer him to the Dodgers for Andy Pages." Pages has put up numbers that should have gotten him an All-Star nod. In his second season, he has a .283/.323/484 slash line with 17 home runs in 90 games. He is under club control through 2031, and trading him would be a shock. If the Dodgers cut ties with him, they would almost be forced to make Hyeseong Kim an everyday player, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Kim or Tommy Edman could play in the outfield every day while the other slots in at second base. The Dodgers would have to ride a platoon at third base while Max Muncy recovers, however. On the other hand, Clase was arguably the most dominant reliever for the last three years. He is a three-time All-Star and had a 0.61 ERA and 47 saves last 2022 to 2024, he had a 1.72 ERA and 133 saves. This season, he has 19 saves and a 3.12 ERA. However, the Dodgers could get him to be their closer and deploy Scott as a setup man. Clase is still a dominant option and has a 1.33 ERA since the start of May. He is also under club control through 2028. A bullpen that features Clase and Scott could be a lethal duo for the Dodgers. Trading Pages may deal a significant blow to the offense, but the Dodgers may already have the pieces in place to replace him. However, the fact that they are not using those same pieces to replace Michael Conforto is puzzling. A trade involving Pages is highly unlikely, but Bowden thinks the Guardians can get a productive offensive player for Clase. More MLB:
