Warren Buffett donates record $6 billion Berkshire shares

FILE PHOTO: Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett attends the Berkshire Hathaway Inc annual shareholders' meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S., May 3, 2024. REUTERS/Scott Morgan/File Photo Warren Buffett donated on Friday another $6 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Gates Foundation and four family charities, his biggest annual donation since he began giving away his fortune nearly two decades ago. The donation of about 12.36 million Berkshire Class B shares boosted Buffett's overall giving to the charities to well over $60 billion. He donated 9.43 million shares to the Gates Foundation; 943,384 shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation; and 660,366 shares to each of three charities led respectively by his children Howard, Susie, and Peter: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation and NoVo Foundation. Warren Buffett still owns 13.8% of Berkshire's stock, based on reported shares outstanding. His $152 billion net worth prior to Friday's donations made him the world's fifth-richest person, according to Forbes magazine. Buffett would rank sixth after the donations, which surpassed the $5.3 billion he donated last June. He donated another $1.14 billion to the family charities last November. In a statement, Buffett maintained he does not intend to sell any Berkshire shares. Now 94, Buffett began giving away his fortune in 2006. He changed his will last year, designating 99.5% of his remaining fortune after his death to a charitable trust overseen by his children. They will have about a decade to distribute the money, and must decide where it goes unanimously. Susie Buffett is 71, Howard Buffett is 70, and Peter Buffett is 67. Warren Buffett has led Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire since 1965. The $1.05 trillion conglomerate owns close to 200 businesses including Geico car insurance and the BNSF railroad, and dozens of stocks including Apple and American Express. Susie Buffett leads the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which funds reproductive health and is named for her mother, who was Warren Buffett's first wife. The Sherwood Foundation supports Nebraska nonprofits and early childhood education. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation focuses on global hunger, combating human trafficking and mitigating conflicts. The NoVo Foundation has initiatives focused on marginalized girls and women, and on indigenous communities. Buffett said last June that donations to the Gates Foundation would end when he dies. Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Canandaigua boys lacrosse

After earning a spot in the Class B state championship, the Primetime 585 Spotlight Team of the Week is the Canandaigua boys lacrosse team. The Gray Wolves have had quite the path to the state finals. It started in their sectional final game, where they knocked off defending champion Victor 11-10. Canandaigua then faced Lake Shore in its regional game, defeating the Section VI team 15-6. The Gray Wolves built an early lead with seven goals in the first quarter and never looked back. Patrick Olvany had three goals in the win, and Drew Williamee had five assists to go with his two goals. Goalie Quentin Shedrick recorded a 75% save rate in the matchup. Nine different Gray Wolves found the back of the net in the regional win — a stat that proves head coach Deven York's philosophy that every player on his roster has something to contribute. 'From the beginning, we've been an all-in, everybody, top-bottom mentality,' York said. 'Everybody on the team's got a role, everybody's role is just as important. These guys embrace it, so that's how we roll.' In the state semifinals, Canandaigua defeated Christian Brothers Academy of Section III 17-11. Mike Belles led the way with six goals and added two assists. Ryan Bremer tallied four goals and an assist, while Jack Stanney picked up three goals and Williamee added two. After the win, Stanney spoke on the excitement of the state championship, especially as it will feel like a home game with just a short trip to Hobart and William Smith Colleges. 'We're excited to be back there,' Stanney said. 'It's in our home turf, it's going to be a lot of people there cheering for us. We're excited for it. It's going to be a good time. It's going to be fun.' The last time Canandaigua made an appearance in the state finals was in 2022 when Williamee was a freshman. The senior has grown a lot since then, learning what it takes to get ready for the high-stakes games. 'As an individual, I don't feel pressure anymore,' Williamee said. 'You've just got to get yourself comfortable. Everybody has their own little mojo that they've got to do to get themselves ready. But, it's just another game.' Canandaigua will face off against Garden City of Section VIII on Friday, June 13th at 5:30 p.m. Congratulations to the Gray Wolves for being this week's Primetime 585 Spotlight Team! Boxers deliver standout performances across three days of action

TWO boxers from Blackbird Leys ABC delivered standout performances across three thrilling days of action at the Ed Bilbey Box Cup in Grantham. Senior middleweight Jamal Franklin, 19, and youth welterweight Yousef Elmgraif, 17, represented the Oxford club. In the quarter-finals, Franklin was drawn against the highly-rated Tommy Naismith from York. Over three intense rounds, Franklin displayed sharp technical ability, adapting to his opponent's style and forcing a standing count in the final round. Franklin's dominance was reflected in a unanimous decision victory, setting the tone for a strong weekend. READ ALSO: Great and good pay tribute to former U's youth chief Elmgraif began his campaign against Nauman Ilyas of Solihull. Using his range and dynamic level changes, he overwhelmed his opponent, delivering three standing counts and forced a stoppage in the third round. Day two brought fresh challenges. Franklin faced local veteran Nathan Wallace (34) from Grantham ABC in the semi-finals. Despite Wallace's cut from the previous day reopening early in the bout, Franklin controlled much of the action, effectively evading wild charges while landing cleaner shots. In a result that surprised both corners, the bout was awarded to Wallace on a split decision. Elmgraif's semi-final saw him matched against Hayden Lloyd of Touch Gloves Grantham. Lloyd's style was no match for Elmgraif's relentless pressure and composed aggression, and earned another unanimous decision to book his place in the final. On finals day, Elmgraif faced Aidan Perry of White Rose Boxing Club for the Youth Class B under-67kg title. Undeterred by Perry's height advantage, Elmgraif worked both head and body with relentless forward pressure, again securing a unanimous decision and taking home the gold medal.
