Ozzy Osbourne dies weeks after farewell show

(NEXSTAR) — Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne has died. He was 76 years old. 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' his family said in a statement posted to social media and shared with various outlets. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time,' the statement continued. Osbourne's wife of more than 40 years, Sharon, signed the statement, as did his children, Aimee, Kelly, Jack, and Louis. 'The Cosby Show' actor dies in accidental drowning No cause of death was provided, and no additional information was released. Osbourne announced in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. A year prior, he canceled tour dates due to health problems, including a 'bad fall' in which he said he injured vertebrae in his neck. Then, in 2023, Osbourne said his touring days had 'ended' due to spine damage he had suffered during an accident in 2019. Sharon Osbourne confirmed in 2022 that her husband had undergone a 'major operation.' While she didn't divulge details at the time, Ozzy had earlier told Classic Rock magazine that he was 'waiting on some more surgery on my neck.' Earlier this month, however, Osbourne joined the original members of the Black Sabbath — Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward — for one final show in Birmingham, England. 'It's my time to go Back to the Beginning….time for me to give back to the place where I was born,' Osbourne said in a social media post in February. 'How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham Forever.' That same night, Osbourne's daughter, Kelly, was proposed to by her DJ boyfriend, Sid Wilson. Osbourne formed Black Sabbath in 1968 in his hometown of Birmingham (it's there that kids in school nicknamed him Ozz), a city then known for its heavy industry that became the crucible of the British metal scene. Black Sabbath's devil imagery and thunderous sound made them one of the era's most influential — and parent-scaring — metal acts. In the late 1960s, Osbourne had teamed up with Butler, guitarist Iommi and drummer Ward as the Polka Tulk Blues Band. They decided to rename the band Earth, but found to their dismay there was another band with that name. So they changed the name to the American title of the classic Italian horror movie 'I Tre Volti Della Paura,' starring Boris Karloff: Black Sabbath. Both the band and Osbourne as a solo artist have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Osbourne's fame expanded into the mainstream in the early 2000s, when he joined his wife Sharon Osbourne, and two of their children in the MTV reality TV show 'The Osbournes.' Osbourne embodied the excesses of metal. His outlandish exploits included relieving himself on the Alamo, snorting a line of ants off a sidewalk and, most memorably, biting the head off a live bat that a fan threw onstage during a 1981 concert. (He said he thought it was rubber.) Osbourne was sued in 1987 by parents of a 19-year-old teen who died by suicide while listening to his song 'Suicide Solution.' The lawsuit was dismissed. Osbourne said the song was really about the dangers of alcohol, which caused the death of his friend Bon Scott, lead singer of AC/DC. Audiences at Osbourne shows could be mooned or spit on by the singer. They would often be hectored to scream along with the song, but the Satan-invoking Osbourne would usually send the crowds home with their ears ringing and a hearty 'God bless!' He started an annual tour — Ozzfest — in 1996 after he was rejected from the lineup of what was then the top touring music festival, Lollapalooza. Osbourne's look changed little over his life. He wore his long hair flat, heavy black eye makeup and round glasses, often wearing a cross around his neck. In 2013, he reunited with Black Sabbath for the dour, raw '13,' which reached No. 1 on the U.K. Albums Chart and peaked at No. 86 on the U.S. Billboard 200. In 2019, he had a Top 10 hit when featured on Post Malone's 'Take What You Want,' Osbourne's first song in the Top 10 since 1989. In 2020, he released the album 'Ordinary Man,' which had as its title song a duet with Elton John. 'I've been a bad guy, been higher than the blue sky/And the truth is I don't wanna die an ordinary man,' he sang. In 2022, he landed his first career back-to-back No. 1 rock radio singles from his album 'Patient Number 9,' which featured collaborations with Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready, Chad Smith, Robert Trujillo and Duff McKagan. It earned four Grammy nominations. He is survived by Sharon, and their three children — Kelly, Aimee and Jack — as well as his eldest son, Louis, from a previous marriage.

Steve Miller Band cancels tour, saying extreme weather is a safety concern

(Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP, File) Classic rocker Steve Miller has cancelled his U.S. tour because he said severe weather including extreme heat and unpredictable flooding poses a danger to his band, its fans and crew. The tour was set to kick off in August and run through early November, with nearly three dozen stops across the U.S. including cities in New York, Tennessee, Florida and California. 'The combination of extreme heat, unpredictable flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes and massive forest fires make these risks for you our audience, the band and the crew unacceptable,' Miller, 81, said in a statement posted on the band's social media accounts Wednesday. 'You can blame it on the weather. ... The tour is cancelled.' The Steve Miller Band, formed in California in the 1960s, has hits including 'The Joker' (1973) and 'Abracadabra' (1982). A band spokesperson declined to provide additional details about the cancellation. Miller's decision comes as a stretch of extreme weather in the U.S. has made headlines. A sweltering heat dome that baked much of the eastern half of the nation in June and deadly flash flooding in Texas are some of the recent rounds of extreme weather. Scientists say climate change is fueling extreme weather, causing storms to unleash more rain and sending temperatures soaring to dangerous heights, making it harder to plan outdoor summer events. The atmosphere can hold higher amounts of moisture as it warms, resulting in storms dumping heavier amounts of rain compared to storms of the past. Music festivals have recently encountered extreme weather, resulting in cancellations or causing concertgoers to become ill. In June, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee was canceled partway through due to heavy rainfall. Last week, hundreds of people were treated for heat-related illnesses at the Rock the Country music festival in Kentucky, according to local officials. A study published in 2020 reported climate change will increase the likelihood of extreme heat stress during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California. Tropical storms and hurricanes will soon contribute to the turbulent weather as activity peaks between August and October, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. ___ Isabella O'malley, The Associated Press The Associated Press' climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. (Photo by) Decades after its release, AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' doesn't simply stand out as the band's most memorable hit — it's the one that is somehow still finding new fans to this day. The single regularly appears across a number of Billboard charts, not only in America, but globally, and the track continues to grow. At the moment, the band's iconic tune climbs on both of the company's worldwide rankings, reaching notable new highs this week as it ascends again. AC/DC's Classic Rockets Up Global Rankings 'Thunderstruck' surges on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., lifting more than 10 spaces on each tally. The tune rises to Nos. 122 and 150, respectively, reaching new high points on both rosters as it soars. Last week, on the Billboard Global 200, 'Thunderstruck' moved from No. 149 to No. 140 in its one-hundredth frame on the ranking of the most consumed songs all around the planet. That placed it just one rung below its all-time high of No. 139. At the same time, the track managed a never-before-seen peak on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Just days ago, 'Thunderstruck' bolted from No. 191 to No. 169, and this week, it improves its best standing again. 'Thunderstruck' Outpaces Other AC/DC Hits As 'Thunderstruck' climbs, the tune leaps over both 'Highway to Hell' and 'Shot in the Dark' to become AC/DC's highest-peaking hit ever on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. The track also holds that honor on the Billboard Global 200, where the band has snagged five placements throughout the brief half-decade that Billboard has been publishing the two rankings. Still a Smash in America In the U.S., 'Thunderstruck' returns to No. 1 on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs tally, reclaiming the summit by rising just one space. At the same time, the cut reverses course on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart, dipping a single spot to No. 3. Last week, AC/DC's classic lived inside the top 10 on three tallies. At the moment, it drops from No. 9 to No. 15 on the Rock Digital Song Sales roster, after recently celebrating a decade on that ranking.

Dolly Parton and Mötley Crüe Top Charts With Heartfelt Duet

Dolly Parton and Mötley Crüe Top Charts With Heartfelt Duet originally appeared on Parade. Mötley Crüe and Dolly Parton have just achieved cross-genre success. After teaming up on the rock group's iconic 1985 hit, "Home Sweet Home," in June, Mötley Crüe and Parton, 79, have soared to No. 1 on the Mediabase Classic Rock Songs chart. The reimagined track celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original song from Mötley Crüe's Theatre Of Pain album, and marks the first time the track has topped the charts. Beyond the milestone, the collaboration carries a powerful message, with a portion of proceeds from the single supporting Covenant House, an organization dedicated to providing shelter, meals, and hope to youth experiencing homelessness. Mötley Crüe spoke about working with Parton in a joint statement shared following the song's release on June 20. "'Home Sweet Home' was first released in 1985 as a single from our Theatre Of Pain album. For an icon like Dolly Parton to sing on a song that has not only meant so much to us but to all the fans through the years, is a career high that means a lot to us," they shared. "We couldn't be happier to celebrate the 40th anniversary of 'Home Sweet Home' in this special way, and we're excited to share this version of the song with all the Dolly and MÖTLEY fans around the world." They continued, "That we were able to unite with Dolly to raise awareness for homeless youth and the amazing work of Covenant House, which provides them safe housing and care, makes it even more special. We hope you'll enjoy 'Home Sweet Home' featuring Dolly Parton as much as Dolly and we enjoyed creating it." For her part, Parton reflected on the experience, calling it an "honor." "It was an honor and a joy working in the studio on MÖTLEY CRÜE's 40th Anniversary re-release of 'Home Sweet Home,'" the "9 to 5" singer noted. "I was so pleased that they would ask me to sing on such a classic." In addition to fans getting the chance to score limited edition Dölly Crüe merch, the band also released a video for the track, which pays tribute to the original 1985 classic, and has already racked up over one million views on YouTube. This isn't the first time Mötley Crüe and Parton have topped charts together either. Bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist John 5 joined the country icon as special guests on her song "Bygones," featured on Parton's 2023 album, Rockstar. The duet of "Home Sweet Home" is part of Mötley Crüe's upcoming singles collection, From The Beginning, dropping September 12. Classic Rock Wife, 47, Stuns at Event Without Legendary Husband, 78

Classic Rock Wife, 47, Stuns at Event Without Legendary Husband, 78 originally appeared on Parade. Classic rock wife Sally Wood was spotted looking absolutely stunning at a press event in London — but notably without her iconic husband, Ronnie Wood, with whom she had been photographed just one day prior. Mrs. Wood, 47, was all smiles as she posed on the red carpet in a gorgeous gold patterned gown and matching gold heels while attending a press night performance of Till the Stars Come Down at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in England's capital city on July 9. She also donned some dark sunglasses, something that she has also done with her husband, 78, during public appearances to match — but the Rolling Stones guitarist was notably absent from the carpet. The theatre company owner and her legendary husband were photographed in a rare red carpet appearance the London premiere of Johnny Depp's next directorial project, a film called Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness. The couple, who appeared together at the Curzon Mayfair in support of the film, were all smiles and dressed to the nines as they held each other close for photos. The pair even made some funny faces for the camera at the event and seemed to be in wonderful spirits — so it's definitely curious that the musician didn't attend the event with his wife, whom he married in September 2012. The pair also share two 9-year-old twin girls named Gracie Jane and Alice Rose, who were born just one day before the guitarist's own birthday on June 1, 2016. As for the show Mrs. Wood attended, Till the Stars Come Down is a play being produced by the National Theatre for a limited 13-week run. The official synopsis reads: 'It's Sylvia and Marek's wedding and you're invited. On a scorching summer's day, a tight-knit family gathers to celebrate. But as the drinks flow and the dancing begins, love is tested, loyalties are stretched, and long-held secrets are revealed. With laugh-out-loud hilarity and heart-wrenching tenderness, Till The Stars Come Down celebrates and confronts what it really means to be a family.' Considering Wood's wife's role in the London theatre industry and community, it makes sense to see her looking gorgeous at a star-studded event like this — but we just wish we could've seen Ronnie take to the carpet with her.
