Barcelona footballer Lamine Yamal ‘illegally hired dwarves' for birthday party
Lamine Yamal, the Spanish football star, has been accused of breaking the law by allegedly hiring dwarves for entertainment at his 18th birthday party. Yamal celebrated his birthday on Saturday night at a villa with about 200 friends, family members and paid guests, including female models. But pictures emerged of people with dwarfism also apparently arriving at the party, with the Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE) claiming they were there 'solely for entertainment and promotional activities'. ADEE said it would take legal action against Yamal, arguing it could violate Spanish law intended to protect the dignity of disabled people. It claimed that his alleged actions violated the 'fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful'. Yamal has not responded to the allegations. Guests at the party, who included many of Yamal's Barcelona teammates, reportedly had to leave mobile phones at the entrance to guarantee the privacy of the event. The party had a gangster theme, with Yamal said to have worn a white suit with a gun motif embroidered into the waist. One model, Claudia Calvo, told the TV station TeleCinco that she had declined the offer as she found it offensive, claiming that only 'blonde girls with a certain bust size were eligible'. Yamal has also been criticised on social media after a video emerged apparently showing him travelling in a van on Sunday morning after the party without wearing a seatbelt. ADEE said that spectacles featuring dwarves 'perpetuate stereotypes, fuel discrimination, and undermine the image and rights of those with achondroplasia or other forms of skeletal dysplasia'. 'It's unacceptable that in the 21st century, people with dwarfism continue to be used as entertainment at private parties, and even more serious when these incidents involve public figures like Lamine Yamal,' said Carolina Puente, ADEE president.
