B.C.'s police watchdog deployed to officer-involved shooting in Surrey

A police incident in Clayton Heights is seen on Monday, July 7. B.C.'s police watchdog has been deployed to an officer-involved shooting in Surrey's Clayton Heights neighbourhood. The Surrey Police Service says the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is also involved in the case. It appears the situation began around 8:30 p.m. Monday night near 66A Avenue and 195 Street. Neighbours tell CTV News they saw police respond to a home on 66A Avenue and not long after they heard what sounded like four-to-five gunshots. 'Even though it occurred in Surrey, because it involved only RCMP members, the BC RCMP and the (Independent Investigations Office) will be issuing news releases later this morning and SPS will defer to the IIO, as the investigation into the shooting now rests with them,' said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the SPS in an email to CTV News Tuesday morning. Houghton could not provide details about the nature or time of the initial call the RCMP were responding to. Dozens of police, fire, and ambulance vehicles were deployed to the scene. The street and the laneway behind it were quickly put behind police tape as officers investigated. The IIO is the civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing. This is a developing story, check back for more information.

When brainstorming how to keep De Balinhard's memory alive, his friend from school suggested reviving the fundraiser to make a donation to cancer research in Chase's name. 'It's heartwarming to see the community come together. The De Balinhards are beloved members of our community and everybody mourned Chase's death with them, and so anything we can do to bring awareness and to bring a little peace to them is what we're going to aim to do today,' said organizer Joy Schroeder, mom of the late teen's friend. Local teenagers sold the freezies for a minimum $1 donation and shared memories of their friend, while supporting a cause near and dear to him. Chase De Balinhard Chase's parents, Crystal and Rick De Balinhard, were in attendance. They described their son as a 'real jokester' and an 'old soul' who loved vintage music and toys.
