100,000 sanitary workers to get reward money

LAHORE: Reward money announced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will be distributed among more than 100,000 workers of the Suthra Punjab Programme on June 21 (today) for their performance during the grand operation on Eid-ul-Azha. In this regard, a ceremony will be held at the tehsil level across Punjab in which the workers will be invited. This decision was taken during a meeting that was chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq on Friday. Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Special Secretary Asia Gul, Additional Secretary Ahmer Kaifi, Deputy Commissioners and chief officers of municipal bodies were also present. The Minister said that instead of calling all the workers on the same day, if necessary, the reward money can be distributed among the remaining people on the next day. He said the Chief Minister had announced the reward of Rs 10,000 each for over 100,000 workers who worked hard and with commitment during the hot weather on the Eid days. 'The workers worked hard during the scorching sun, and thus we saw exemplary cleanliness on Eid-ul-Azha. Hence, the Punjab government announced the reward to recognise the hard work put in by the workers,' he added. He directed the officials concerned to invite elected representatives to the ceremonies, observing that public representatives also played a full role in the awareness campaign during the grand operation. On this occasion, the Secretary said that bank drafts will be transparently given to the workers, adding that no worker of the Clean Punjab Programme should be deprived of the prize money. Murree sets up cattle market for Eidul Azha

The Murree district administration has set up a dedicated cattle market to facilitate citizens ahead of Eidul Azha. The market was inaugurated recently at the ground located below Jheka Gali on Hill Dholu Road, one of the most picturesque spots in Murree city, where the Municipal Corporation has organised the facility. The Municipal Corporation has urged livestock sellers and buyers from the local community to cooperate with the administration and bring their animals to the designated market. Issuing official instructions, Murree Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi emphasised that the cattle market has been established at a specific location to ensure cleanliness during the Eid festivities. He further warned that no cattle markets would be allowed on other roads or areas, and that a strict action would be taken against anyone violating these regulations. On the other hand, the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) has finalised cleaning arrangements, including the removal of waste ahead of Eid under Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's vision and "Suthra Punjab Programme". Following the directives of RWMC CEO Rana Sajid Safdar, a grand cleaning operation is underway across all tehsils of the Rawalpindi Division. This operation includes specialised waste clearance and sanitation efforts in city streets, highways, markets, residential areas, and cattle markets, running round the clock. With Eidul Azha approaching, waste lifting, manual sweeping, lime sprinkling, and immediate cleaning are being conducted daily in all cattle markets of Rawalpindi, including Murree, under a coordinated strategy. The operation manager in Murree, Talha Mir, is supervising the sanitary workers actively deployed in the field. RWMC CEO Safdar is closely monitoring the "Clean Punjab Programme" in the division and reviewing daily field reports.

Sanitary workers await salaries

Hundreds of sanitation workers under Punjab's government's "Clean Punjab Programme" have been without salaries for three months, leaving them struggling to survive. Many workers have had their electricity and gas connections cut due to unpaid bills, while their children have been expelled from schools for non-payment of fees. As the fasting month of Ramazan continues, the workers say they have been forced to beg to sustain their families. Protesting in Rawalpindi, they demanded immediate payment of their salaries, warning that if their dues were not cleared before Eid, their celebrations would be ruined, just as their Ramadan has already been. Sanitation workers Qaiser Jahangir, Khalid, and Ali told The Express Tribune that the government, which promised to clean all cities and villages within a month, has abandoned its own workers. "We were hired in November 2024 and received only one month's salary. Now, we are drowning in debt," they said. The workers also claimed that ACs keep delaying their payments.
