East St. Louis School District 189 Marks Next Phase in Electric School Bus Project
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill., June 11, 2025 /CNW/ -- East St. Louis School District 189 will host a community event on Thursday, June 12 to celebrate continued progress in its electric school bus initiative. The event will highlight the construction of a new depot that will support 25 electric school buses and chargers. The district was awarded funding through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program as part of a competitive, multi-district application. The project includes the deployment of 25 Thomas Built electric school buses and 25 Heliox chargers, with operations scheduled to begin in the 2025–2026 school year. "We are proud to roll out 25 new electric school buses for regular routes this coming school year—an investment in both the health of our students and our community," said Arthur R. Culver, Superintendent of East St. Louis School District 189. "Our students deserve clean, safe, and modern transportation. These electric buses reduce harmful air pollution, reflect our commitment to safety, and help ensure that every child arrives at school ready to learn and thrive." Culver added, "This is an exciting step forward for student wellness and a cleaner, healthier future for East St. Louis." The project is being delivered in close partnership with North American Central School Bus (NACSB), one of the largest student transportation providers in North America and Highland Electric Fleets, a leading provider of Electrification-as-a-Service (EaaS) for school bus fleets across North America. NAC will operate and maintain the buses, while Highland is managing the charging infrastructure and long-term electrification support. Work is underway at the NAC depot in Caseyville, which will serve as the operational hub for the new fleet. Ameren Illinois, the project's utility partner, is assisting the infrastructure development with make-ready funding through its Electric Vehicle Charging Program. GreenPower Announces First Deliveries to West Virginia under EPA Clean School Bus Program Grant

Round 2 of the CSBP, which was funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), included an award of $18.565 million for seven West Virginia school districts to deploy 50 GreenPower all-electric, purpose-built, zero-emission school buses manufactured by American workers in South Charleston. The contract for the award from EPA was signed by GreenPower of West Virginia, the state's dealer for GreenPower Motor Company, in December 2024. "We are pleased to have manufactured these first four BEAST school buses for the Clean School Bus Program grant in West Virginia and delivered them within 90 days of the contract being signed with the EPA," said GreenPower President Brendan Riley. "As a result of the cooperative work done by West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, our dealer was able to receive the Round 2 grant funding for the school buses and we were able to make these first deliveries almost immediately," Riley continued. "Personally, I am pleased that GreenPower was able to work closely with the Senator to ensure the release of the grant funds, allowing us to build the school buses with an American workforce with appropriate oversight by the Trump Administration." Senator Capito, who serves as Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, has discussed the need for administrative changes to the implementation of the balance of the CSBP with GreenPower and others in the school bus industry. Those changes include awarding of funds through a competitive system like the Round 2 West Virginia grant instead of a random luck-of-the-draw lottery system. "The Round 2 West Virginia grant represents the intent Congress had when it created the CSBP. It is a well thought out approach that involved multiple school districts and school boards, the school bus OEM, infrastructure providers, utilities, parents and others in the planning," Riley continued. Pittsburgh Public Schools adds 16 electric buses to fleet
Pittsburgh Public School district buses are going electric. The district is adding 16 electric buses to its fleet, which officials showed off at a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday morning. PPS says the new buses are more efficient and better for student health, especially for kids with asthma. 'These electric buses will mean fewer inhalers, fewer ER visits for asthma, and clearer skies over our playgrounds,' Rep. Summer Lee said. 'It means parents can rest easier every morning knowing that their kids are not breathing diesel fumes on their way to school.' The buses are part of a partnership between PPS and transportation provider First Student. The buses were funded through the EPA's Clean School Bus Program.
