Formal complaint filed against Vote.org by its founder

counsel Vanessa Avery, a partner at McCarter and English, vigorously denied the claims by Cleaver, saying they were 'categorically false.' In the 28-page complaint , shared first with Morning Score, Cleaver alleged there was no serious plan for the group to deliver on its pledge to register 8 million voters for the 2024 cycle, which would have been more than the total number of voters it had registered during its entire 14-year history. ended up registering 2.2 million voters in the 2024 cycle. Cleaver, who now runs a similar group called VoteAmerica, filed the complaint with the attorneys generals of New York, California, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Score independently verified all filings except the one in Georgia. Among her claims: that the group originally set an internal goal to register 6 million voters, but that was increased to 8 million to avoid the 'symbolism of 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust.' 'The fact that ultimately failed to register 8 million voters is inconsequential to the organization, because that was never the true goal,' Cleaver said in the complaint. 'The goal was staying afloat, attracting donor attention, and retaining relevance through the illusion of scale.' The organization is one of the biggest nonpartisan voter registration vehicles in the country, but it has come under scrutiny in recent years over its internal management. The complaint points to the example of Taylor Swift, who previously worked with the group. But last year, when Swift endorsed Kamala Harris, she directed fans to go to to register instead of plugging . The complaint alleges a Daily Mail story on internal turmoil at the group helped cause Swift to avoid touting the organization again. (A Swift spokesperson didn't respond to a request for comment.) 's spending and alleged internal dysfunction was also the subject of a Chronicle of Philanthropy investigation last year.

Jackson County Executive Frank White vetoes special vote for charter assessor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. has vetoed an ordinance that called for a special election for a county charter assessor. In a letter to Jackson County legislators, White called the special election 'unnecessary and premature' as there are already scheduled elections for which the ballot could be placed on well before its effects would be implemented. Reps. Cleaver, Davids announce federal funding for World Cup security The election would have taken place in November of 2025, with its decision not being implemented until 2028. Instead, White says that the election could be placed on a regular ballot, which would save millions for Jackson County taxpayers. 'This would be the fourth unbudgeted election proposed by this Legislature in less than two years,' he said. 'Not one has passed. Not one has been fiscally responsible. And this one is no different. I support giving voters a say, but we can and should do it in 2026, when it won't cost Jackson County taxpayers a single extra dollar.' That's not the only problem, according to White, either. He says that, aside from the cost of the special election, the proposed ballot also misrepresents the responsibilities of the Charter Assessor. 'Abolished': State Department is laying off over 1,300 employees under Trump administration plan 'The ordinance says the elected assessor would be responsible for taxation in the county. That's just wrong,' White said in his release. 'Under Missouri law, taxation is the job of the collector. The assessor is responsible for valuing property accurately and fairly. If we can't get that distinction right in our founding document, we shouldn't be rushing this to the voters.' However, White did include that he would be in favor of a revised ballot, just not one outside of an August 2026 or November 2026 election. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Deputy and wife die as driver fleeing drug house crashes head-on, MO cops say

A man has been charged with murder two days after an off-duty deputy and his wife were killed in a head-on crash, Missouri authorities say. The 4-month-old grandchild of Deputy Sheriff Mike Adams and his wife, Ashley Adams, was the only occupant inside their minivan to survive the June 30 crash in Highlandville, according to the Christian County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said 40-year-old Garrett Grimm Cleaver was seen driving away from a known drug house, and a deputy tried pulling him over because his headlights were not working. Cleaver fled from the deputy, who lost sight of the driver's Ford F-150, according to a probable cause statement. The deputy then came upon the scene of a devastating crash, as the F-150 had crashed into a Honda minivan, authorities said. A witness to the 9 p.m. crash provided video that showed the F-150 going airborne, court records show. After it landed, the truck left the roadway, fishtailed and struck the minivan head-on. Ashley Adams and Mike Adams, a 52-year-old deputy with the Christian County Sheriff's Office, were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Deputies said their grandchild was hospitalized 'in stable but serious condition' with head injuries. Cleaver was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated fleeing a stop resulting in death, one count of aggravated fleeing a stop resulting in physical injury and one count of second-degree assault, according to a July 2 news release. According to the court documents, Cleaver has an 'extensive criminal history,' including a conviction for vehicular homicide. An Air Force veteran, Mike Adams joined the Christian County Sheriff's Office in 2022, the agency said. Previously, he worked for the Scott County Sheriff's Office and Mississippi County Sheriff's Office. 'Mike was one of those guys that no matter what the situation was, or he was asked to do, you could count on him,' Sheriff Brad Cole said in a statement. 'The loss of Deputy Adams and his wife is a profound tragedy for our agency and the entire community. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.' Highlandville is about a 190-mile drive southeast from Kansas City.
