M&S makes major change to convince you to switch your weekly food shop
M&S has long been associated with dine in treats, picky bits and limited edition yumminess (strawberry sando and Big Daddy choc, we're looking at you). It's not somewhere most of us do our weekly shop. But now, the supermarket has launched more than 100 new items in a bid to become 'a true shopping list retailer' that can compete with the likes of Sainsbury's and Tesco. From this week, M&S has expanded its Bigger Pack, Better Value range by a third, aiming to deliver family-sized staples at affordable prices. New lines added to the range include 12 Free Range British Eggs for £3.20, a four pack of Hass avocados for £3.50, and larger size Double Cream (600ml) for £2.65. Historically it's been hard to get everything you need at M&S, but alongside new family packs, shoppers will now find other cupboard essentials in store, from medicines and bulk-buy washing tablets, to baby food and own-brand formula. The changes couldn't come sooner for M&S, which is still managing the fallout from a huge cyber attack earlier this year. The high street shop was targeted by hackers in April, which disrupted contactless payments and Click and Collect – just one of many major retailers that have been hacked in recent months. More Trending Shoppers were faced with empty shelves and a pause in online orders, with M&S stating that its profits would be reduced by around £300 million due to the impact. Each month, consumer watchdog Which? compare the average price of 79 items at the UK's biggest supermarkets to determine the cost of doing your food shop. Sadly, M&S aren't included, but the latest results show Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in June. The budget supermarket charged £131.52 on average for the shopping list of branded and own-label groceries. Lidl was close behind – Lidl Plus loyalty app users would pay just 35p more in comparison (£131.87), or 37p for non-loyalty members (£131.89). Meanwhile Asda, which doesn't offer loyalty discounts in the same way, was crowned the cheapest of the traditional supermarkets, with the same list of groceries costing £144.82. At the other end of the scale, Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket at £178.64 – that's 36% more than Aldi. Alex Freudmann, managing director at M&S Food, said the chain has been 'working hard' on the expanded line to 'close our range gaps and make sure the price and quality of our key family lines delivers against customers expectations.' 'All this has been increasing our credibility with families and we're seeing strong growth with these shoppers,' he said. 'As we always say at M&S, there's still lots of opportunity to go further and really cement M&S as the destination for families to get everything they need, at the quality you can only get from M&S.' M&S to take weeks to recover fully from devastating cyber attack
Marks & Spencer is expected to fully resume online shopping within four weeks as it continues to recover from the massive cyber attack. Half of the systems including Click and Collect are still down despite online orders being restarted in June, the retailer's boss said. Stuart Machin told the retailer's annual general meeting that after the brand goes 'fully on' the focus will then be on getting its Castle Donington distribution centre in the East Midlands 'back and running'. He said that 'we will have the vast majority of this behind us' by August. Hackers disrupted contactless payments and Click and Collect during the cyber attack in April. The retailer then confirmed that customer data had been stolen, although it said no passwords or card details were accessed. The attack will wipe around £300 million from this year's profits, the chain has estimated, with the losses only being partly covered by insurance. Online orders have resumed in England, Scotland and Wales, but customers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are still waiting for the service. Mr Machin said: 'Currently, half of online is open but not areas like Click and Collect. Within the next four weeks we are hoping for the whole of online to be fully on. 'Then our focus will be getting the Donington site back and running.' The high street giant has previously said that the disruption to services will continue into June and July. Last week, it sent out e-gift cards to customers who had online orders cancelled or had click and collect orders delayed. A message on the M&S website today reads: 'We will resume Click & Collect, Next Day Delivery and UK Nominated Day Delivery for fashion and international ordering in the coming weeks.' More Trending The retailer is just one of many household names that have been hacked recently including Co-op, Harrods and Dior. In April, Co-op had to shut down its IT systems to stop hackers from snatching personal and financial information like shopper passwords or bank details. As with the M&S cyber attack, Co-op shoppers were left contending with empty shelves and deliveries being paused. Do you have a story you would like to share? Glasgow M&S customers handed special gift after cyber attack
The supermarket giant was struck by a major cyber attack in April 2025. It only recently reopened its website to shoppers after it was forced to halt online orders following the damaging attack. Now, affected punters have been sent an e-gift card from the firm as an apology for the attack. "To thank you for your support, we're sending you an e-gift card to spend online, or in our stores across our fantastic fashion, home and beauty ranges. "We have now resumed online orders in England, Scotland, and Wales with home delivery within five days and nominated day delivery available for flowers and hampers. "If you are in Northern Ireland, the e-gift card is currently valid in-store only, whilst we work hard to resume online orders. "Look out for an email from us in your inbox with your e-gift today. Thank you for shopping with us." The cyber attack in April saw the firm face heavy disruption. M&S halted orders on its website over the Easter weekend and was left with some empty shelves after being targeted by hackers. Customer personal data, which could have included names, email addresses, postal addresses and dates of birth, was also taken by hackers. M&S revealed last month that the hack was caused by 'human error' and would cost around £300 million.

IKEA is shutting two UK stores today just weeks after opening massive new Oxford Street shop – is your local affected?
IKEA has shut two UK stores today just weeks after opening a massive new Oxford Street shop. The retail giant, founded in Sweden in 1943, announced its plans to close the Aintree Plan and Order Point store in Liverpool earlier this month. 1 Ikea has closed two stores today (stock) Credit: Getty The smaller Plan & Order Point store provided customers with home furnishing guidance and was devoted to kitchen and bedroom planning. The Aintree store closed its doors for the final time today. According to Ikea, the closure was "a result of valuable learnings which will take the conceptual format in a direction to better suit the needs of UK customers." IKEA Stockport in Merseyway Shopping Centre, which opened just two years ago has also ceased operations today. Current Stockport customers are now being directed to the next nearest main IKEA store, the branch in Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside. Locals can also now pick up their IKEA purchases from Tesco Extra in Stockport and the Tesco Extra in Stretford as part of Click and Collect. Other Plan and Order points, such as the ones in Dundee, York and Hull, will be adapted to meet those new demands and also include a small range of home furnishing accessories to buy. A spokesperson for Ikea said: 'There has been an increased demand for Click and Collect services, a desire to shop a smaller selection of home furnishing accessories, as well as the ability to return goods to physical IKEA units, something which, owing to the space available, the current location is unable to offer. 'To better service its customers, future Plan and Order Point openings, including in Dundee, Hull and York will offer these services. I did a haul of the new Oxford Street Ikea whilst on my lunch break & I managed to kit out with bargains under £3 "IKEA also remains committed to trialling new formats including its upcoming small stores, one of which will open in Chester later this year.' The Swedish retailer had 22 stores across the UK after opening its first branch in Warrington, Cheshire in 1987. IKEA recently opened a new shop on London's Oxford Street. It's set over three floors and 5,400 square metres compared with the average size of 30,000 square meters for most of IKEA's locations. You'll be pleased to know that along with the Swedish meatballs, the bargain hot dogs, fish and chips, and Daim cake are all still on the menu. A plate of eight meatballs served with mashed potatoes, peas, cream sauce and lingonberry jam costs its usual bargain price of £5.50. It comes after IKEA opened its own hotel in the Canary Islands. Boasting cheap rooms, a swimming pool and breakfast, it also offers some of their most popular homeware items. Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House is a new two-star hotel owned by the interiors brand in Gran Canaria. Rooms start from £105 a night, which includes a continental breakfast, and works out to just over £50 a night for two people.
