Ireland miss out on promotion at European Athletics Team Championships
Ireland finished fifth in Division 2 of the European Athletics Team Championships in Slovenia on Sunday, narrowly missing out on promotion to the top tier of the continental competition. Strong performances from the likes of Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC), Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC), Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) and the mixed 4x400m relay team kept the 43-strong team in contention right up to the last few events. Lavin took Ireland's only win of the weekend, earning maximum points in the women's 100m hurdles. The Limerick sprinter clocked a time of 12.82 seconds to claim victory. Team captain Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers AC) was sixth in the men's 200m, while in the women's event Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn AC) finished just outside her personal best, clocking 23.32 seconds to finish fifth. The mixed 4x400m relay team of Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers), Cliodhna Manning (Kilkenny City Harriers), Callum Baird (Ballymena and Antrim AC) and Sharlene Mawdsley combined to clock a time of 3:14.81, finishing second in their heat and fourth overall. Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) made a strong return from injury to finish third in the men's 800m. The Longford native closed strongly in the final 100m to cross the line in a time of 1:46.37. In the women's 1500m, Laura Nicholson (Bandon AC) finished fourth on her Irish senior international debut, the 25-year-old clocking 4:20.48. Finley Daly (Sligo AC) ran bravely to also place fourth in the men's 3000m steeplechase. The Galway-based athlete clocked a time of 8:51.89. In the field, Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) fouled her opening two throws but composed herself well to finish the competition in third position, her best throw coming in the fourth round at 70.50m. Team captain Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock AC) produced a lifetime best of 14.29 metres in the women's shot put to finish seventh, while Conor Callinan (Leevale AC) also recorded the best result of his career, clearing 4.90 metres in the pole vault. In the men's javelin, Conor Cusack (Lake District AC) impressed to claim a eighth-place finish, throwing a best of 72.43 metres.

Ireland in promotion hunt after strong day one at European Team Championships
Ireland are in fifth place after day one of the Division 2 events at the European Athletics Team Championships in Slovenia. It was great day for Jack Raftery and the men's 4x100m relay team, as they set another new national record. Raftery put in one of the performances of the day to clock a PB of 44.98 in the 400m, which was good enough to see him finish fourth. In doing so, the Dubliner became just the second Irish man to break the 45-second mark. "I don't know if I have words for it," Raftery said afterwards. "That's the best field I've ever been part of; it's a Diamond League quality field. If I had ran a PB and came last, I would've been happy. I can't believe that. I felt great coming down that home straight. "Oh my god I'm delighted." Sharlene Mawdsley, meanwhile, ran an SB of 50.93 as she came home third in the women's 400m, a result that she was satisfied with. "I don't even know how I made it around," was her assessment post-race. "A season's best is great, it's a shame I didn't come first, I would've loved to win the top points, but it would've taken a PB to do that today. "It was about getting out there and doing my family proud." But there was delight for the men's 4x100m team as they set a new national record for the second weekend in a row. The team of Michael Farrelly (Raheny Shamrock AC), Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC), Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) came home in 38.88, four tenths of a second faster than what they had managed last weekend. "There's a lot of effort that has gone into this over the years," said team captain Lawler. "We're all delighted to break the national record." It was good enough for second place overall. The action is set to resume this afternoon at 1.30pm with promotion on offer for the teams which finish in the top three. Efrem Gidey claims landmark gold for Ireland at European 10,000m Cup
Efrem Gidey has become the first Irish athlete to win a European 10,000m Cup title. The Clonliffe Harriers AC runner finished in a time of 27:40.47 to clinch gold at the event which was held in Pace, France. It is the 24-year-old's first senior international podium appearance of his career for Ireland as he pipped French duo Valentin Gondouin and Felix Bour who took silver and bronze respectively. Gidey has broken a number of Irish records this year. In March, he shaved almost 13 seconds off Alistair Cragg's national senior 10,000m record with a 27:26.95 run at 'The Ten' meet in California. In January, he broke John Treacy's 40-year-old 10km Irish record by three seconds in Valencia, clocking 27:43. Last September, he set the half-marathon Irish distance record with a run of 60:51.

Smiles and sunshine light up Drogheda 10K
Spectators lined the steps of St Peter's Church and the length of West Street, cheering on athletes from across the region in what turned out to be a festival of sport, community, and heartfelt stories. At the front of the pack, it was Sean Doran of Clonliffe Harriers AC who claimed victory in an impressive time of 32 minutes and 13 seconds, with Drogheda & District AC's Paul Smith following closely behind in 33:32, earning him both the runner-up position and the Over-40s category win. Colin Dyas continued his strong form with a standout 34:45, while Rodney Thornton clocked a top-10 finish in 37:12. Just outside his personal best, Paul Kierans crossed the line in 38:02, contributing alongside Colin, Rodney and Paul Smith to claim the Louth County Team Prize. In the second wave, Jordi Romera was thrilled with his performance, finishing in 38:07. Aedan Prone pushed to the line with grit, clocking 38:11, while the returning Colm Reilly proved he's still got it with a time of 38:35. Newcomer Shaun Conroy had perhaps the debut of the year, completing the challenging course in 40:11, while veteran Paddy Murphy claimed the Over-50s title with a solid 40:41. But it wasn't just about times and trophies. The atmosphere was electric and joyful, with spectators soaking in the sun and applauding every effort. The course offered runners stunning views - from the climb up Rathmullen to the serene banks of the Boyne and the sweep of Mary McAleese Bridge over fields golden and green. Highlights included Nuala Reilly, running in aid of the Derek Winters family, and the inspiring duo Linda and Barney Flannery, who completed the race to raise awareness for sight loss in sport - running blind and side-by-side every step of the way. The 2025 Drogheda 10K wasn't just a race. It was a celebration of endurance, unity, and love - on every corner, bridge and finish line cheer.
