Shaunagh Connaire, Former Communications Director for George and Amal Clooney's Justice Foundation, Sets Directorial Debut ‘Brown Bread' (EXCLUSIVE)

Shaunagh Connaire, the two-time Emmy-nominated Irish journalist who has produced documentaries for the likes of the BBC and PBS Frontline and also served as communication director for George and Amal Clooney's Foundation for Justice, has made her directorial debut. 'Brown Bread,' which is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Galway Film Fleadh, is a short film that marks Connaire's first foray into narrative drama, turning her storytelling lens toward emigration and family tension in modern Ireland. More from Variety CNN's Live 'Good Night, and Good Luck' Telecast Spurs Special Coverage CNN to Exclusively Air George Clooney's Record-Breaking Broadway Hit 'Good Night, and Good Luck' Live for Free Joe Biden Didn't Recognize Old Friend George Clooney at 2024 Fundraiser: Report The film — described by Connaire as a 'modern twist on the Irish emigration story' — is led by Emmy-winning actress Fionnula Flanagan ('Lost,' 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes'), Katie McGrath ('Merlin,' 'Supergirl') and Dermot Crowley ('Luther: The Fallen Sun,' 'The Death of Stalin'). Inspired by Connaire's own experience of being unable to return to Ireland from the U.S. for her godmother's funeral, 'Brown Bead' follows Áine (McGrath), a woman whose return to Ireland from New York to attend her godmother's memorial mass stirs up old tensions, grief, and unspoken affection in her rural family home. Flanagan stars as Betty, a proud but emotionally restrained mother struggling with her daughter's return, while Crowley plays Áine's father Seamus. 'I was very lucky to have spent the last three years working with George and Amal Clooney as Director of Communications at their foundation. I think being in their presence and learning a little bit about the world of Hollywood, gave me the confidence to enter this world,' said Connaire. 'Brown Bread was my first time stepping onto a drama set. For the past decade I've documented the opioid epidemic in the US, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the migrant crisis in the Middle East — environments where the stakes were very real. This film was a different kind of intensity, but just as meaningful in its own way.' Producer Julie Ryan ('The Young Offenders') of MK1 Studios came aboard the film after reading the script. 'Shaunagh and I have known each other since college, so this felt like a natural fit. I was immediately struck by the script. It was sharp, funny, and full of emotional truth. She's a hugely talented writer and director with a strong sense of tone and storytelling,' said Ryan. 'With the market shifting, short film is a valuable space to develop voice and vision. It gives new filmmakers the freedom to take creative risks and tell distinctive stories on their own terms.' 'Brown Bread' was filmed in Connaire's hometown of Longford, with support from Creative Ireland's Longford branch and local community. The film was written and directed by Connaire, produced by Ryan for MK1 Studios, with Sam and Amelia Dennigan and Anne Heraty as associate producers. Amal Clooney on What Keeps Her Fight as a Human Rights Barrister Alive

As one of the most accomplished human rights barristers working today, Amal Clooney has built a remarkable reputation as a supreme defender of those who have suffered systemic abuse, particularly women and girls who have been victims of sexual violence. 'I'm constantly moved by the courage of those who pursue truth even when that comes at a great personal cost: journalists who dare to speak truth to power, young women who refuse to be silenced,' Clooney tells British Vogue. In 2019, she and her husband, George, launched the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which provides free legal aid in over 40 countries. The greatest challenge she faces in the pursuit of justice? 'Apathy. There will always be injustice, cruelty, and abuses of power,' she continues. 'But if the good people—those who don't agree with what is happening—stay quiet, it becomes very difficult to effect change. If there is more cowardice than courage in the corridors of power—in governments, companies—it is very difficult to improve the system. Yet I believe that justice must be waged, it is not something that simply happens on its own.' Vogue: Hi Amal, could you tell us what you are working on at the moment? Amal Clooney: I am currently representing Maria Ressa, a journalist facing life imprisonment in the Philippines simply for doing her job. I have recently filed submissions in a case at the International Court of Justice seeking justice for the victims of genocide in Myanmar. And I represent 871 victims of ISIS in a case in the East District of New York. My clients in this case include Nadia Murad—a Yazidi survivor of sexual violence who went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize—and it is the first case that provides the victims of ISIS's genocide a chance to obtain life-changing compensation. I am also working on the programs I created at the Clooney Foundation for Justice. We run a global legal aid program for women and journalists that now operates in over 40 countries. Our work has already led to dozens of journalists being set free and thousands of women who are victims of violence, child marriage, or discrimination being provided with free legal support. But we are always looking for ways to scale our impact. We are excited to be launching, this October, the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice, a new partnership between the Clooney Foundation and Oxford University that will harness AI to increase access to justice.

Hillary, Huma and Amal walk into a bar: Newest female Dem power trio spotted at NYC hotspot

They're the ladies on the left who lunch. The newest female Democratic power trio was recently spotted at the swanky Midtown restaurant The Polo Bar. Huma Abedin, the ex-wife of disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner, broke bread with Hillary Clinton and George Clooney's wife, Amal, at the celebrity hotspot last week, a source told Paula Froelich of NewsNation. 'There were secret security and bodyguards everywhere,' the source said. 'They were just huddled together at a table talking.' Abedin is tying the knot with philanthropist George Soros' son Alex, who controls his dad's $25 billion dollar Open Society Foundations, one of the world's largest private philanthropic funds that donates to liberal political causes. The 48-year-old — who started her political career as an intern for Clinton in 1996, then became her deputy chief of staff and vice chair of her 2016 presidential campaign — now runs the Democratic Party inside circle, Froelich's sources said. Clooney, an international lawyer, and her hubby — who famously penned the 2024 New York Times essay 'I Love Joe Biden, But We Need A New Nominee' — are liberal icons and run the Clooney Foundation for Justice together. Abedin, Clinton and Clooney are now considered 'the female triumvirate of the Democratic Party,' Froelich said, adding that Adedin's wedding to Soros will take on June 14 in the Hamptons and may include the Dems talking about plans to revive the party. 'If these people are picking the new party head, we are in trouble,' an insider told her.
