Five goals from Danny Furlong as Rosslare Rangers recover to beat St. Joseph's
First up in the Diskin Design League quarter-finals saw Rosslare Rangers travel up to Kilmuckridge to play St. Joseph's. Rangers went into the game as bookies' favourites for the league, but the Joey's – off the back of their win over Kilmore in the shield the previous week – stunned their opponents and went in at half-time 4-1 up. Rangers came out a different team in the second-half and showed why they're the most successful team in the league's history as they completely turned the game around to run out 6-4 winners. Danny Furlong was the main man, scoring five, and Aaron Kehoe was also on the scoresheet. Paddy Fennell with three and Mick Farrington netted for the home side. Corach Ramblers entertained Ballymurn in Danescastle and proved far too strong for their opponents, running out 6-2 winners. John Staples and M.J. Doran scored two each with Gareth McCurtin and Jamie Staunton also among the goals. Shane Campbell and Paul Walsh replied for Ballymurn. Gorey Celtic travelled down to Murrintown to play Forth Celtic, fresh off the back of their shock but well-deserved win over Corach in the cup one week earlier. This game went all the way to extra-time but in the end the home side prevailed on a 4-3 scoreline. 'Nibbs' Hayes and 'Patsy' Malone had a double each, with John Lavery (two) and Mark Tyndall scoring for Celtic. Taghmon United beat Cloughbawn in a ten-goal thriller in the last quarter-final, despite an Adam Gracz hat-trick for the losers. The victors' goals came from Cian Rossiter, Pascal Waters, Shane Power, Darragh May, Murt Delaney, John Doyle and Willie McDonald. In the Roche's Bar and Restaurant League Trophy quarter-finals, Crossabeg proved too strong for Duncannon and ran out 4-1 winners. Will McCreevey with two, Barry Coughlan and Fergal Buckley got the goals, with Tommy Quinn managing a late consolation goal for the seasiders. Rosslare Strand made the long journey up to Arklow and, despite playing the game with just ten men, they were extremely unlucky to come out on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline. Willie Kavanagh and Joey McCallion scoring for the winners, with Danny O'Reilly getting the Strand goal. Kilmore United welcomed Courtown Hibs to Abbie Troy Park and after a hard-fought game it was the home side who progressed to the semi-final, thanks to two goals from Jay Leniston. Scott Fitzpatrick was on target for Hibs. This weekend will see two double-headers being played on Saturday as the Cup and Shield reach the semi-final stage. Bet XS Shield semi-finals (both 4.30 p.m.): Arklow v. Cloughbawn in Crossabeg; St. Joseph's v. Rosslare Strand in All Blacks. Anthony Rowe Windscreens Cup semi-finals (6.15 p.m.): Courtown Hibs v. Tag of favourites isn't a burden to Cloughbawn as Liam Mellows miss out
After registering 35 scores the first time out against Horeswood, it wasn't quite so devastating this time around but their tally of 1-23 will win most games in this championship, as the Whitty brothers shared 15 points while Connal Flood grabbed five. They were given a better test by Liam Mellows, who have started their lives as a second-tier side in impressive fashion, despite taking just one point from their two games. It started intriguingly as both sides looked to impose their will. Liam Mellows were looking to run the ball at the Cloughbawn defence and draw tackles while their opponents were tidy moving it around through the hand and diagonally by stick. It was 0-5 each after a well-balanced opening quarter. Liam Mellows saw Eoin Cullen knock over four points, including an early effort from play, and Alex Murphy also raised a white flag. Meanwhile, Bob Whitty picked off three frees for Cloughbawn, with Connal Flood adding a brace. The critical score of the opening half came in the 16th minute, when the experienced Colm Kehoe ran at the Mellows defence and drew the last defender. Kehoe fed the perfect pass into Liam Flood and the finish past Gavin Stamp was exquisite. After sharing the first ten points, the clubs did the same for the next ten after the goal, with Doran Daly-O'Toole and Neil Byrne adding their names to the list of Liam Mellows scorers while Paddy Whitty hit four lovely efforts at the other end. However, Cloughbawn added the last two of the period through Paddy Whitty and Harry Kehoe to move into a five-point interval lead (1-12 to 0-10). The Castleboro-based side had the breeze in the second-half and made use of it as they moved nine points ahead early in the second period. The younger Whitty brought his tally to six in that spurt and Barry Carton also pointed, but Liam Mellows did well in the middle part of the half, scoring five of the next seven points, with Cullen getting his eleventh and Seán O'Hagan also making the scoresheet. In the O'Brien Transport Group A, Duncannon hosted Shelburne for the second week in a row. However, it was the away side who returned home with the three points and in the process secured their own first league win with a goal in each half from James and Chris Connick. The two unbeaten sides in this group met in Danescastle, and home side Corach Ramblers got the win after putting in their best performance of the season to date to romp to a 5-2 victory. In the Crystal Script Engraving Group B, there was only game played and Crossabeg picked up their second win of the season as they put in a storming second-half performance to come from 1-0 down to run out 4-1 victors. In the Group C, Forth Celtic welcomed Rosslare Strand to Murrintown. Strand have struggled so far this season and had lost all four games, but they put in a decent performance and limited Forth to only a few chances. In the other game in this group, Kilmore produced a defensive horror show as mistake after mistake at the back allowed Rosslare Rangers cruise to a 5-2 win. Two Jason Murphy goals for Kilmore were in vain as Warren Broaders with a double, Aaron Kehoe, Danny Furlong and Paul Boyce scored for the winners. ADVERTISEMENT In the SouthEast Vegetables Group D, Gorey Celtic prevailed by one goal against Courtown Hibs after a titanic struggle and a game with end-to-end action. DANIEL WOLOHAN CUP On Monday, October 16, 2023, the football family of Arklow Town and surrounding areas were thrown into utter shock and sadness at the sudden passing of Daniel Wolohan. Daniel, a devoted family man, was married to the love of his life, Kirby, with whom he had three beautiful children: Kasey, Leo and Penny. The winter was long and time moved slowly on, but the dearly-departed Daniel was never far from anyone's mind. Then August 17, 2024 came around – a day filled with joy and at the same time sadness as Daniel's beloved Arklow Town claimed their first-ever trophy in the Richie Dwyer Over-35 Wexford Soccer League, beating Cloughbawn in the League Trophy final. And without a doubt they did have a twelfth man on the field that day as Daniel was surely savouring every minute of it. Anyone who had the privilege to know Daniel was extremely lucky, and their life was definitely better for him being in it. As a small gesture towards his family and his beloved Arklow Town, the league organisers decided to try to honour his memory and make sure his name will forever live on in one of his passions in life: football. In order to do that, the Over-35 League Trophy will forever more be known as the Daniel Wolohan Memorial Trophy. 'It's a small gesture of our appreciation and one we hope will bring some small bit of comfort to Kirby, Kasey, Leo and Penny in the months and years ahead,' league Chairman Joe Doyle said. Daniel Wolohan was a gentleman to his fingertips. His love for his family and his football club will live on forever, aided a small bit by the renaming of this trophy.
