Messi leads Inter Miami against Nashville SC in high-stakes MLS clash
Lionel Messi rest? Not a chance. Not when Inter Miami is on a roll and playing a home game against one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer. Messi, who played 90-plus minutes in the previous 14 games, was in the starting lineup against Nashville SC on Saturday night at Chase Stadium. Nashville is off to its best start in club history and entered Saturday's game riding a 15-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. A year after finishing in 13th place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, Nashville sat just one point behind first place Cincinnati. Miami was also in peak form heading into Saturday's game. After being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup Round of 16, Inter Miami returned to MLS highly motivated and delivered back-to-back road victories against CF Montreal and New England Revolution over the span of five days. Messi scored two goals in each of those two games, and made MLS history, becoming the first player to score multiple goals in four consecutive games. In the process, Miami moved up to fifth in the East, seven points behind Cincinnati with three games in hand. Miami is on pace to match last season's MLS season record for points. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said 38-year-old Messi and a few of the other veteran players will need to rest at some point, but Saturday was not the time. Joining Messi in the Miami Starting XI were: Oscar Ustari, Marcelo Weigandt, David Martinez, Maxi Falcon, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Benja Cremaschi, Telasco Segovia, Tadeo Allende, and Luis Suarez. Nashville's starters were: Joe Willis, Daniel Lovitz, Jaisson Palacios, Jack Maher, Andy Najar, Patrick Yazbek, Hany Mukhtar, Jacob Shaffelburg, Edvard Tagseth, Ahmed Qasem, and Sam Surridge. Two big reasons for Nashville's success are Golden Boot leader Surridge, who has 16 goals in 21 games, and 2022 MLS MVP Mukhtar with nine goals and eight assists.

Kylian Mbappe makes Club World Cup debut, Real Madrid leads Juventus 1-0
A day after a pair of European giants were slain by underdog teams in the Club World Cup Round of 16, it was time for another pair to face off at Hard Rock Stadium: Real Madrid played Juventus in a salivating mid-afternoon matchup with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. The 'Madrid!' chants began less than a minute after the opening whistle and a sea of white Madridistas and a smaller, but spirited, number of fans wearing Juventus' trademark black and white vertical stripes nearly filled the 65,000-seat stadium on a dreary day that began with a deluge. After a scoreless first half, the crowd was desperate for a goal and got a beautiful one in the 54th minute from Gonzalo Garcia with an uncontested header from six yards out after a perfectly placed high cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold. It was the third goal in four Club World Cup games for Garcia, the 21-year-old Spaniard. One of the biggest storylines of the game was the return of Madrid's French star Kylian Mbappe, who made his tournament debut after missing all three group matches against Al Hilal, Pachuca and RB Salzburg after being diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis on the eve of the tournament. Mbappe was hospitalized during the opening days of the competition and has been working his way back to game fitness. He began Tuesday's match on the bench and was greeted with a huge cheer during warmups and then another ovation when he emerged from the tunnel after halftime. 'Mbappe! Mbappe!' the crowd chanted, as the forward warmed up midway through the second half. And then, fans roared when he entered the game in the 68th minute, replacing Garcia. Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said in the leadup to the match: 'It's a big possibility that he makes his Club World Cup debut tomorrow, though. I don't know how much, but it's a big possibility.' Read Madrid's Starting XI included Thibaut Courtois, Dean Huijsen, Aurelien Tchouameni, Antonio Rudiger, Fran Garcia, Arda Guler, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia. Alonso took over the club less than a month ago, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. He previously coached at Bayer Leverkusen was a standout midfielder with Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich. 'Every single match is now all or nothing,' Alonso said. 'It's a huge match and we have been preparing for the last few weeks to be ready. We are at the knockout stage now, last 16 against a top team like Juve, so we will have to have a very complete performance to go through. 'This match is important. It's a very different competition to those we normally play in, but Real Madrid is very demanding, and you are expected to win. This is our third week together. I am pumped, very excited.' Another Real Madrid player in the spotlight Tuesday was midfielder Luka Modric, the Croatian great who turns 40 in September and will leave for AC Milan after the Club World Cup. Modric started on the bench and fans hoped to get a glimpse of him in what could be his last match in a Madrid jersey. Juventus coach Igor Tudor, a former Croatia teammate of Modric's, remarked: 'What can you say about Luka? We have less than 4 million people in Croatia, so a person like him brings a lot of pride for the country. He is a player that you all see, but he is just a normal person. He represents our country in the best possible way. I love him and I hope he will keep having fun, even though he is now 40.' The starting lineup for the Italian club was: Michele De Gregorio, Lloyd Kelly, Daniele Rugani, Pierre Kalulu, Andrea Cambiaso, Khephren Thuram, Manuel Locatelli, Alberto Costa, Kenan Yildiz, Randal Kolo Muani, and Francisco Conceicao.

PSG strikes early, takes 1-0 lead over Messi, Inter Miami in Club World Cup Round of 16
The first 'Messi! Messi!' chants inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium began at exactly 11:22 a.m. Sunday morning, as an expected crowd of more than 62,000 filed in for the highly anticipated Club World Cup Round of 16 showdown between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami team and his former team, Paris Saint-Germain. It is a game with many interesting subplots, starting with the fact that despite having Messi and his high-profile friends on the roster, Inter Miami was a heavy underdog against a PSG team that just won the Champions League final 5-0 over Inter Milan, a team stacked with multi-millionaire stars. The French powerhouse showed its dominance from the opening whistle, pressing high and then taking a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on header by a wide open Joao Neves on a free kick from the left by Vitinha. Inter Miami's Starting XI featured Oscar Ustari, Marcelo Weigandt, Maxi Falcon, Noah Allen, Jordi Allen, Tadeo Allende, Fede Redondo, Sergio Busquets, Telasco Segovia, Messi (captain), Luis Suarez. Allen went down with an apparent hamstring injury at the 19-minute mark, was replaced by Toto Aviles, who one minute later was shown a yellow card for a bad foul. PSG's starters included Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos (captain), Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Joao Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola. In addition to the Messi and PSG reunion, the game also featured PSG coach Luis Enrique against five of his former FC Barcelona players, Messi, Suarez, Busquets, Alba, and Javier Mascherano, now the Inter Miami coach and a protégé of Enrique's. Both coaches discussed their special relationship in the leadup to the game. Mascherano acknowledged that his team's improbable undefeated three-game run in this tournament led them to a game that is much more daunting. But his team is up for the challenge, he said. 'We know going into this game that we are the weaker team, but don't dismiss us, we are going to fight,' Mascherano said. 'The beautiful thing about this game is that we earned the right to play in it. Going into the tournament, to be honest, it was difficult for us to have this opportunity. But our players did well and earned it. 'The challenge now is to come in and prove ourselves against the best team in the world. And while it will be hard, we will look for that moment when maybe the game turns and gives us a chance to reach the next round.' Inter Miami co-owners David Beckham and Jorge and Jose Mas were at the game, and shared their thoughts with 'We're super proud, we started Inter Miami with dreaming,' said Jorge Mas. 'It's on our jersey, `Freedom to Dream'. To be standing here playing in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup against the European champions is a dream come true. 'But it's only part of our journey. We continue dreaming big. Irrespective of the outcome [Sunday], we're going continue dreaming so that when people think of futbol in the United States, they'll think of Inter Miami. It's a historic moment for our club.' Beckham, who was an arm sling following surgery, said: 'This a big moment to be playing against a team that in my opinion is the best team inn the world. It's going to be a tough game, but anything in possible. Freedom to Dream is written on our jersey, and we have to believe in that.' Mascherano urged his players to embrace and enjoy the moment. 'I don't know how many chances we will have as a club to face an opponent like PSG; well, [Sunday] we have it and have to take advantage of it and enjoy it,' he said. 'And, also, show that we, with our limitations and virtues, not saying go toe-to-toe with them, but give them a good game.' Falcon said: 'It's going to be a great game, a great experience for me as a player, as I have never had that chance before. We will try to leave it all on the field, like we did the last three games, anything can happen, but we know it will be a very difficult game.'

Nkunku's extra-time goal sparks Chelsea to weather-delayed 4-1 win over Benfica in Club World Cup
CHARLOTTE: Christopher Nkunku scored off a rebound in extra time and Chelsea went on to beat Benfica 4-1 in a Club World Cup Round of 16 match Saturday at Bank of America Stadium that was delayed for two hours due to lightning and took nearly five hours to complete. Chelsea advances to play Palmeiras in the quarterfinals Friday in Philadelphia. Palmeiras beat Botafogo 1-0 on Saturday. Nkunku's tiebreaking goal came in the 108th minute with Benfica playing a man down after Gianluca Prestianni received a red card. Moisés Caicedo's left-footed shot from the left side of the box was saved in the center of the goal by Anatolii Trubin, but an alert Nkunku was there to bury the deflection into the top right corner before being mobbed by teammates. Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added insurance goals in extra time for the final margin. Reece James scored on a free kick in the 64th minute to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead. But with four minutes left, the match was stopped because of lightning and delayed for two hours. When the teams returned, Chelsea was called for a handball in stoppage time when the ball hit Malo Gusto's hand. Angel Di Maria converted the penalty to even the match.
