But he was unable to stop their slide and they returned to the second-tier Championship after just one season back in the Premier League. "Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club," Leicester said in a statement. "From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the club's academy into our first team environment. Van Nistelrooy said: "I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club." jw/bsp

Gareth Southgate ‘not missing' managing England, cites pressure of the job
Gareth Southgate said he is 'not missing' managing England's national team, citing the pressure of the role he vacated in July 2024. Southgate, 54, stepped down as England's head coach following the 2-1 European championship final defeat to Spain last summer. He received a knighthood on Wednesday for his services to football, which includes an eight-year spell in charge of England, during which time he led the nation to two European finals and a World Cup semi-final, while he was also involved with the youth set-up for five years. Advertisement 'It is a little bit strange [not managing England] but also I'm not missing it,' Southgate told BBC Sport. 'I think it's important that I am on that sofa and out of their way, you know. It's theirs to take on now and I think it's important that I give the team as much space as possible.' Southgate and members of his squad regularly responded to criticism over their style of play despite deep runs into major tournaments, and the former head coach said it was 'hard to describe' just the weight of expectation he had carried until he left the role. 'Until that weight's gone you don't necessarily realise just on a day-to-day basis, you know, every hour of my day was thinking about how do I make England better, what's happening with the players, how do we do things differently,' he said. Thomas Tuchel was appointed as his successor and the German coach was critical of England's perceived lack of 'excitement and hunger' at Euro 2024. Southgate said he did not feel it 'important' to discuss his reaction to Tuchel's comments. 'I think what's really important is for me to give the team, the manager, the space to operate,' Southgate said. Southgate is the fourth England manager to receive a knighthood, following Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson. ()
