(Paige Smith) He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, weapons possession and breaching his conditional sentence. Appearing from Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene, Gagnon was dressed in orange prison garb and had short, dark brown hair. He's represented by North Bay law firm Perrin Ahmad LLP. Defence lawyer Evan Kilroy told Justice G.R. Maille that he was surprised by comments from the Crown that it was eager to set trial dates. Changed tracks Kilroy said the Crown said they weren't ready to set a date when asked by the defence for trial dates in June. However, Assistant Crown attorney David Kirk said they were under the impression that 'they were headed for a resolution' to the case, not a full-blown trial. That's something more complicated, Kirk said, and requires several more dates. 'This was originally on the resolution track,' he said. If there is going to be a trial, Kirk said a judicial pretrial will need to be held before trial dates can be set. The sides agreed to an Aug. 1 pretrial and will return to court Aug. 19 with the goal of setting trial dates. Before then, Maille advised the Crown and defence to provide dates when they are available for a trial, and for the defence to provide an estimate on how many days will be required.

Microsoft (MSFT) Rethinks AI Chip Ambitions to Stay Competitive with Nvidia
Tech giant Microsoft (MSFT) is changing its approach to developing in-house AI chips, according to The Information. After facing delays, the company has decided to focus on simpler, less ambitious chip designs through 2028. The goal is to make these chips easier to develop while still remaining competitive with Nvidia's (NVDA) powerful AI chips. Microsoft shared this updated plan with its internal chip engineering team after realizing that trying to build a brand-new chip from scratch every year was not realistic. To keep up with Nvidia without rushing risky designs, Microsoft is planning to launch an intermediate chip in 2027 called Maia 280. This chip will combine two of the earlier Braga chips to deliver more power, which could potentially offer 20-30% better performance per watt than Nvidia's expected chips that year. Microsoft also renamed its next major chip, Braga-R, to Maia 400. This chip is scheduled for mass production in 2028 and will use faster memory and a new die-to-die chip connection, which links parts of the chip before full assembly. However, the method increases the risk of manufacturing defects. As a result, Microsoft is also adopting a chiplet design approach that breaks chips into smaller parts that are manufactured separately and then combined. This reduces defects and saves money, but may slightly reduce performance. While some chip projects have been delayed, others are on track. Indeed, Microsoft successfully launched its Cobalt CPU in 2024 to reduce its reliance on Intel (INTC) and AMD (AMD). Interestingly, Cobalt powers Microsoft services, such as Teams, and is available to Azure customers. In addition, its next version, called Kingsgate, is already designed and will use chiplets and faster memory. Is MSFT Stock a Buy? average MSFT price target of $524.86 per share implies 5.1% upside potential.

Cobalt's 115-year-old train station reopens
After multiple owners and closures, the Cobalt Train Station is opening its doors once again. After multiple owners and closures, the Cobalt Train Station is opening its doors once again. The station has a long and storied history, first opening to the public June 5, 1910. It had its official reopening Wednesday. Cobalt train3 While unable to use the Cobalt Train Station's original doors for the reopening, officials did use them to make the bar. (Madison Marier/CTV News) 'Some of our research (said) the original date was the 25th. So how fitting that we're able to open our doors today on its 115th anniversary,' said Pamela Hamel, project lead for the Cobalt Train Station reopening. While unable to use its original doors for the reopening, officials did use them to make the bar for this bookable venue. Available for bookings The new Cobalt Train station is owned by a private company that will be booking the space out for weddings, events, as well as long-term and short-term rentals. 'It's so exciting,' Hamel said. 'We're really over the moon. Everybody that has been involved with the project, the community has been, you know, just so supportive. And they've been visionaries for decades to try to transform the station into a place, a hub for people to meet and gather.' Her excitement is also shared by the town and council in Cobalt. 'We're so, so just so happy,' said deputy mayor Pat Anderson. 'It's a beautiful event space, a premier event space like we have never had in Cobalt before.' Hamel said she wanted to maintain the deep history the station has with the town. For example, she kept the terrazzo flooring that was worn down over the years to maintain the station's original charm. 'Locals just see it as a place that they can say, hey, you know what? I want to show your the station,' she said. 'The grandparents came here, right? Like I mentioned, for the people getting off the train and walking under the platform and into the building, this was their welcoming ... Part of our operating philosophy is to really make people feel welcome when they come here.' Maggie Wilson, chair of the Cobalt Historical Society, said the train station is what founded Cobalt. At first, workers were just laying the rail tracks passing through the area to get to New Liskeard -- until they discovered silver. It was a discovery that brought the mining industry to Cobalt, creating the need for the Cobalt Train Station. 'It was an essential, prosperous project and it's iconic,' Hamel said. 'It just represents everything (about) how Cobalt got its start and hopefully Cobalt's future.' She said she has big plans for the train station, which will always include Cobalt's rich history.
