‘I lost both my parents': Bronco reveals heartbreak fuelling NRL rebirth
Such personal turmoil – Gosiewski has managed just 28 games between 2021 and 2024 across four clubs – has made his rise back to the NRL all the more miraculous. Both Gosiewski and Gehamat Shibasaki were shock inclusions in Brisbane coach Michael Maguire's round one State of Origin squad, and each scored against the Roosters. Josiah Karapani has followed suit, going from a Queensland Cup regular to unseating former Maroons star Selwyn Cobbo. Cobbo will return for the first time since round 13 at fullback in place of Maroons 18th man Reece Walsh, while Deine Mariner replaces Shibasaki in the centres. Karapani, who has scored five tries in his three games since replacing Cobbo, said Shibasaki's journey from reserve-grade slugger to the Origin furnace – while still on a development deal – had served as an inspiration to him. 'I just wanted to be ready because you never know what can happen. You have to be ready for that next step and once the opportunity comes, you have to take it,' Karapani said. 'With Shibba, far out, he has done so much for the team. There would be people unsure of what our coach was doing adding him to the team. Loading 'I said to him after the game [against the Warriors] 'you will probably have a crack with the Maroons', and he was like 'nah, doubting it', but the fact he is playing now is great.' While Karapani has secured a two-year deal at the Broncos, with Cobbo departing for the Dolphins in 2026, Gosiewski is still waiting to determine his future. The 31-year-old joins fellow forwards Fletcher Baker, Jaiyden Hunt, Corey Jensen and Kobe Hetherington as yet to secure deals beyond 2025, with Brisbane bracing for a potential squad facelift. Gosiewski desires to remain in Brisbane, after he and his partner opened Chargrill Charlie's chicken shop in New Farm.

Cobbo earns Broncos recall, Smith set to return
Dolphins-bound Selwyn Cobbo has earned a Broncos recall at fullback for their Friday night showdown in Sydney against the high-flying Bulldogs as both teams deal with a number of stars away on Origin duty. The Broncos are without key forwards Payne Haas and Pat Carrigan, Maroons rookie Gehamat Shibasaki and Queensland 18th man Reece Walsh which has opened the door for Cobbo to return to the side. Selwyn Cobbo will start at fullback for the Broncos just days after announcing he's leaving the club at the end of the season. The Bulldogs are also without their Origin quartet but at least they still have Matt Burton at five-eighth, with Lachlan Galvin again named on the bench. Blake Wilson and Enari Tuala are the new men in the backline, with Harry Hayes to start in the front row. Mid-season recruit Brandon Smith has been named on an extended bench for the Rabbitohs but is expected to make his return from injury via NSW Cup where he's been named in jersey No.16. Alex Johnston starts at fullback with Latrell Mitchell away with the Blues, while Jack Wighton switches to five-eighth to replace the injured Cody Walker who has been named in the reserves. Rohan Kelly Credit: News Corp Australia There are changes galore in Townsville where Tom Duffy starts at halfback, Harrison Edwards has been named at hooker and Sam McIntyre moves to lock for the Cowboys against a Storm side missing a stack of outside backs. Joe Chan has been named at centre with Kane Bradley on the wing, with Jonah Pezet set to come off the bench after overcoming some horrific injury luck over the past two seasons. Tom Rodwell will make his NRL debut on the wing for the Roosters in Sunday's clash against the Wests Tigers who have moved Adam Doueihi to the halves and Sunia Turuva to fullback due to suspensions and Origin commitments. Tristan Hope starts at hooker in place of Api Koroisau (concussion protocols), while Tallyn Da Silva is no longer at the club after signing with the Eels. The Dragons have been hit hard by injuries with Nathan Lawson, Luciano Leilua, Hamish Stewart and Toby Couchman all unavailable, while Maroons veteran Valentine Holmes will also miss the trip to Canberra. Tyrell Sloan has earned a recall on the wing, while Raymond Faitala-Mariner and Hame Sele are also back in the 17. The Raiders have made one change with Josh Papalii back in the Queensland team, with Corey Horsburgh moving to prop, Morgan Smithies promoted to lock and Trey Mooney coming onto the bench.

'We can help him': Dolphins land out-of-favour Bronco
Kristian Woolf has backed himself to get the best out of Selwyn Cobbo at the Dolphins after the out-of-favour Brisbane star sealed his Red Hill exit. The Dolphins on Friday announced Cobbo's arrival on a one-year deal for next season, despite chief executive Terry Reader pouring cold water on the prospect less than 24 hours earlier. The six-time Queensland representative, who made his Test debut in 2023, has remained in reserve grade since a big loss to Manly in May and is in the final season of a deal worth an estimated $625,000 annually. The Broncos' recent investment in outside backs Grant Anderson, Josiah Karapani and Kotoni Staggs all but sealed Cobbo's fate. But the 23-year-old won't depart early, Broncos coach Michael Maguire adamant his backline ace would not be released before Monday's deadline and remained in first-grade contention. The coach, who described negotiations to keep Cobbo at the club as "tricky", reckons there is another chapter to be written for the crowd favourite who boasts 48 tries in 80 Brisbane appearances. "It's a tough one ... he's a great man but it's part of the game unfortunately," the Brisbane coach said. "Selly and I have spoken and he wants to be here and wants to win a comp with the Broncos. "He's got that opportunity. "He has (rediscovered his love for footy) he's been out training with his teammates, got a smile on his face. "Every player at some stage will go through a bit of adversity and Selly's just gone through that. "Whether it's a circus or not, at least for Selly's sake ... I'm sure it'll give him the best opportunity." Unless there's a change of heart, Cobbo will join the Dolphins in November for preseason training and team with strike weapons Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Herbie Farnworth. Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf said there had been "a bit of movement all over the place" to fit the representative talent into their 2026 budget. "Things are fairly tight ... it's a matter of getting him in," he said of the prospect of a longer deal ahead of the club's clash with South Sydney on Saturday. "I know he's going to add to our team. I like everything I see about him as a bloke and a person." The first-year NRL coach said he would relish the chance to realise Cobbo's full potential. "That's my job as a coach, to get that out of him and I think we've got a very good environment here," he said. "I'll back what we've got here ... I think we can really help him." Woolf said Tabuai-Fidow would remain the club's first-choice fullback but Cobbo's versatility would be a huge asset. "Twelve months ago he's playing State of Origin and he's got so many tools to him," the coach said. "A big athletic body ... even his poor games he's taken 20, 21 carries. "He's one of those blokes who can do things that other people can't. "Every one of our games (we've lost) against the Broncos, he's come up with a play that's had a big impact." Cobbo makes stunning call to quit as Broncos teammate signs with South Sydney
Selwyn Cobbo has reportedly informed the Brisbane Broncos he won't be at the club in 2026, ending weeks of speculation. According to reports, the Broncos only have about $300,000 to offer Cobbo for a one-year contract extension - much less than he'd be able to get on the open market. The Broncos have repeatedly stated they'd love for him to stay, but only if he's willing to take a pay-cut. On Friday morning, The reported that Cobbo has decided to quit the club and move elsewhere in 2026. The Dragons were believed to be the front-runners to sign Cobbo and made inquiries about getting him this year before the June 30 deadline. But the Dragons withdrew their interest on Thursday, believing Cobbo was only trying to use them as a bargaining chip. The Cowboys now appear the most likely destination, and coach Todd Payten revealed the club is interested on Thursday. It would allow the former State of Origin player to remain in Queensland and not too far from beloved hometown Cherbourg. 'We've had a discussion, but that's as far as it's gone at the moment,' Payten said. 'It all depends on what he is asking and what they are expecting. We haven't got that far down the line yet. We always consider quality players and the price point is the determining factor.' Cobbo has fallen out of favour at the Broncos and was dropped to reserve grade three weeks ago. Josiah Karapani, who replaced him on the wing and has scored four tries in two games, signed a two-year contract extension this week. The Broncos have also confirmed the signing of Grant Anderson from the Melbourne Storm for 2026, while Gehamat Shibasaki has shown he's a first-grader this year. 'I think Selwyn Cobbo would help any club he is going to,' Payten said. 'He carries the ball strongly, he can find the try-line and break a game open. He has proven that over time. There's no doubt we could help him get to where he wants to get to, but if we get to that point, it's down to him. I don't doubt our club would be a good fit." RELATED: Panthers superstar in fresh concern before State of Origin 3 Cooper Cronk calls out Bulldogs over Lachie Galvin mistake Meanwhile, the Broncos have also reportedly lost promising young fullback Latrell Siegwalt to South Sydney. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting Siegwalt will join Wayne Bennett at the Rabbitohs on a two-year deal from 2026. The 24-year-old is viewed as Reece Walsh's understudy at the Broncos, but Maguire opted to use Cobbo and Jesse Arthars in the No.1 jersey when Walsh was injured earlier this year. Siegwalt has carved out a reputation as one of the Queensland Cup's best players, but has never been handed a first-grade debut. He scored a try in a pre-season game for the Broncos earlier this year, but is yet to be given a crack at NRL level. The move to Souths would present the same problem for Siegwalt, who will now be stuck behind Latrell Mitchell and Jye Gray.
