Video: A silly moment from me – Jasper Wiese after red card
Jasper and Cobus Wiese struggled to find their words after becoming the 37th pair of brothers to play for the Springboks during South Africa's 45–0 victory over Italy in Gqeberha yesterday. According to The Citizen, Cobus (28) made his debut for the national side, coming on as a replacement at lock in the second half. The joy the pair felt at his achievement stood in stark contrast to the remorse Jasper exhibited at his personal failure. Wiese commends his team The loose forward received a permanent red card after head-butting an opponent in the 21st minute. It left the Springboks a man short for about an hour, though they still completely outplayed the Italians to secure a whitewash victory. However, the pressure was still felt at times by the 14 men, and Jasper had to watch from the sidelines when his brother eventually took to the field at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. 'I know I let the team down,' Jasper said. 'But well done to them for fighting that out. It's not easy playing with 14 guys and they showed some grit today. But ja, just a silly moment from me.' When asked about his brother's debut, Jasper, who is one year his senior, was at a loss for words for a moment. 'This is… I don't want to get too emotional, but it's special for me. It's a long time coming and I am really, really proud.' Cobus, likewise emotional, thanked God for his opportunity to play. 'It's a dream come true to say the least,' he said. 'An overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride is probably what sums it up the best.' Sacha says the Springboks ticked their boxes The sense of triumph felt by the Springboks and crowd in Gqeberha revealed just how important this one-sided win was after last week's frustrating game. Utility back Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu said the team had done especially well to man up in the breakdown battle, an area the Boks struggled in in Pretoria. 'We ticked that box. They ended with no tries, no points, so I think the coach will be happy with that,' Feinberg-Mngomezulu said. 'To go down [a man] and stick to our structures, that was phenomenal. I think Manie [Libbok], Grant [Williams] and Cobus [Reinach] did a great job at that.'

Wiese brothers, Jasper and Cobus, to become 37th set to feature for the Springboks
Other notable brothers to play for South Africa include the Du Preez brothers, the Mullers and Hendrikses. The Wiese brothers, Cobus, playing for Western Province, and Jasper, playing for the Cheetahs, after a Currie Cup match at Newlands in 2017. On Saturday they're likely to play for the Springboks together. Picture: Carl Fourie/Gallo Images Jasper and Cobus Wiese will join a select group of brothers to play for the Springboks when they feature for the current world champions in the second Test against Italy in Gqeberha on Saturday (5.10pm). Loose forward Jasper (29) will earn his 36th cap for the Springboks from the back of the scrum, while younger brother Cobus (28) will play off the bench, either in the loose forwards or at lock, for what will be his debut Test. They will become just the eighth set of brothers since South Africa's return to international rugby in 1992, and 37th pair overall, to play for the Boks. In good company The other brothers to feature for the national team since 1992 are: Helgard and Pieter Muller, Pieter and Chris Rossouw, Geo and Jacques Cronje, Akona and Odwa Ndungane, Jannie and Bismarck du Plessis, Rob, Jean-Luc and Dan du Preez and most recently Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse. Both Wiese brothers went to school in Upington in the Northern Cape, but then followed different paths to the Boks. Jasper, a specialist eighthman, played for the Griffons and Cheetahs before moving to England where he played for Leicester for many years. Most recently he's played in Japan. He made his Bok debut in 2021. Cobus played for Western Province and the Stormers before also moving to England and playing for Sale Sharks. At the beginning of this season he returned to South Africa where he plays for the Bulls, mostly as a lock. 'Excitement' Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said it was exciting seeing the brothers preparing for Saturday's match. 'It's always fantastic to see siblings play together, and one can sense their excitement about this memorable occasion,' said Erasmus this week. 'I have no doubt that will motivate them even more going into the game.' Saturday's Test will be the Boks' third match of the year, after they opened their 2025 season with a friendly against the Barbarians, while last weekend in Pretoria they beat Italy in the first Test between the nations 42-22. Next week the Boks face Georgia in Mbombela.

Wiese brothers add names to Springbok record books
As the Springboks unveiled the team to face Italy in the second Test this Saturday, it was also revealed that Wiese brothers (Cobus and Jasper) will become the 37th set of brothers to play for South Africa. From Naas Botha and Darius Botha, to Pieter Rossouw and Chris Rossouw, to Bismarck du Plessis and Jannie du Plessis, there have been some incredible sibling duos who have featured for the Springboks. The Hendrikse siblings (Jordan and Jaden) most recently became the 36th set of Springbok brothers against Wales in the last match of the end-of-year tour in 2024. The Wiese duo are now the 37th set of brothers to don the green and gold together, which was something Rassie Erasmus acknowledged at the team announcement. 'It's always fantastic to see siblings play together, and one can sense their excitement about this memorable occasion,' said Erasmus. 'I have no doubt that will motivate them even more going into the game.' Saturday's Test against Italy kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport and SABC. Brothers Jasper and Cobus Wiese inching closer to Springboks dream
FILE - Big Springboks No 8 Jasper Wiese is back after spending three months on the sidelines with a neck injury. Image: Backpagepix We know that burly Jasper Wiese resembles a runaway train when he gets the ball but his toughness was reflected in his description of the neck injury he suffered earlier this year while playing for his Japanese club. 'Ag no, it wasn't that serious. It was just two discs in my neck that had to be replaced. It was three months of recovery. It wasn't like it was one of those year-long problems,' the No 8 said calmly ahead of Saturday's first Test against Italy in Pretoria. No fine, just two discs replaced … No problem for the 122kg, 1.89m Bok battering ram. 'I am just excited to be with the Boks. It is always a massive privilege for me to be in camp with everybody,' the humble Upington product added. In camp with Jasper is his younger brother, Cobus Wiese, who is likely to get a debut run next week in the second Test against Italy in Gqeberha. Cobus, who is comfortable in both the second and back rows, has often said in interviews with the Bulls that it is a dream of his to play with his big boet. Video Player is loading. 'We have never had the opportunity to play in the same team and what better opportunity than to represent your country together, so I really hope he gets a run,' Jasper said. 'I'm very happy for him because he has dreamed of playing for South Africa, and I hope he uses his opportunity. 'I try and watch as many of his games as I can,' the 34-cap Wiese said. 'Cobus has had a very good season. It is not that he did not play well overseas (at Sale Sharks), but I think the move back to South Africa did wonders for him. It is great to see him thrive in the Bulls environment with a lot of guys that are here now at the Boks. I hope he can flourish at the Boks too.' Jasper launched his career at the Cheetahs before spending five years at the Leicester Tigers. He moved to the Urayasu D-Rocks in Japan last year. 'It is a different style of rugby to what I experienced in the UK,' he said. 'I have spoken to guys who have been there since 2017, and they say the competition gets more competitive every year because more and more top foreigners are joining the league. 'I have learned how to run because the rugby is much faster there,' he smiled. Wiese's focus now is solely on Italy and he says the forward pack have set goals for the two-match series.
