Baltimore City has declared a Code Red extreme heat alert through later today. Major relief awaits us Friday when high temperatures in many of our neighborhoods will fall shy of 80° Thursday heat and humidity followed by strong storms Sunny skies early Thursday will allow temperatures to quickly heat up into the lower to middle 90s. While record heat is not forecast today, the heat will still be tough on us and our pets. With high levels of humidity, feels like temperatures will range from 100° to 105° for most of us. Everyone is advised to take frequent breaks in the A/C and drink plenty of water. Isolated to scattered strong to severe storms will develop anytime today, but especially after lunchtime. The most numerous strong storms should be between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. A few storms could produce drenching downpours, very intense lightning, gusty winds, and hail. Widespread severe weather isn't likely, but a few storms could be severe with wind gusts up to 60 to 65 mph. Remember to keep a close eye and ear out for rapidly changing weather conditions. When thunder roars, head indoors. Heat alerts in Maryland A heat advisory is in effect for central Maryland until 7 p.m. Thursday. Extreme heat continues Wednesday across Maryland

Dangerous levels of heat and humidity will continue across Maryland Wednesday with high temperatures reaching the upper 90s to near 100°. While record highs may stay safe today, the heat will remain extreme, especially when combined with the tropical humidity. Everyone is advised to continue taking heat precautions seriously, as the temperatures will be dangerous even to healthy individuals. Baltimore has declared a Code Red extreme heat alert through Thursday, June 26. Extreme heat and humidity continue across Maryland The combination of near triple-digit heat and elevated humidity levels has prompted the WJZ First Alert Weather team to continue an Alert Day for Wednesday, June 25. We'll once again be monitoring near-record heat. Our normal high temperatures for late June are in the upper 80s. BWI reached 98° Tuesday afternoon, two degrees shy of the 2010 record. Meanwhile, the Inner Harbor surpassed the century mark for another day, peaking at 105° Tuesday. Wednesday will also feature dangerous heat, but high temperatures should fall just shy of 100°. BWI's record high for June 25th is 99° from 1997 and right now our forecast calls for us to be a degree or two short of that record. The warmest low temperature on record for that same date is 78°, set in 1875. Records for the Baltimore area go back to 1872. Regardless of whether we see new records on Wednesday, prepare for more highly uncomfortable levels of heat and humidity statewide. Feels like temperatures will be between 100° and as high as 110° for most. While this will be a couple of degrees lower than days past, it'll still be dangerous if you don't prepare. Isolated strong and possibly drenching thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon and evening, and another, possibly higher, chance of storms comes on Thursday. Hot for the Orioles game this evening The Orioles will finish out their series with the Rangers this evening. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. and the game looks hot and steamy. Temperatures will start off in the lower 90s, but feels like temperatures will remain in the upper 90s. While there could be an isolated thunderstorm, this is a rather slim chance. Worst case scenario there could be a brief rain delay. The first 15,000 people in attendance tonight will receive a free Orioles pride jersey in honor of pride night at Oriole Park. By the time the game ends, temperatures will still be in the middle 80s with a very muggy feel to the air. Current heat alerts in Maryland Heat is the number one weather-related cause of death in the United States. Please take the Alert Days seriously, especially if you will be outdoors now through Wednesday evening. As the extreme heat continues, additional heat alerts will be active across much of Maryland: The Eastern Shore is under an extreme heat warning through Wednesday at 8 p.m. A heat advisory is in effect for central Maryland starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday through 9 p.m.. Feels like temperatures could approach 110° for these areas. Regardless of whether or not your neighborhood is under an alert, the entire area will be extremely hot and humid, even overnight. Low temperatures in the 70s and 80s are warm enough, but with high levels of moisture, we'll wake up already feeling like the mid-80s again on Wednesday. Beating the heat during this Maryland heat wave Here are a few ways to stay safe and healthy while working outside during extreme heat: Wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing Avoid being in the direct rays of the sun Take frequent breaks if you plan to be outdoors Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Two liters of water a day is recommended Remember pets and the elderly in the heat Make sure ceiling fans are circulating counterclockwise to circulate cooler air downward In preparation for the unusually hot weather, Baltimore City's Health Department is declaring its first 'Code Red Extreme' Heat Alert. The alert begins Sunday and runs through the middle of the week. A list of cooling centers is available HERE. Late week storms then brief relief Friday Thursday should be the last day of this current heat wave. While extreme heat warnings are not likely Thursday, we're still forecasting hot and steamy temperatures. Highs Thursday afternoon will reach the lower 90s with heat index values close to 100°. A cold front will continue to sag south Thursday afternoon sparking off numerous showers and thunderstorms. A few of these storms could be strong to severe with locally damaging winds. The greater risk from these storms may be localized flash flooding given the high humidity values and potentially slow-moving storm motions. Some neighborhoods could receive locally a quick 1 to 3 inches of rain while other neighborhoods will receive far less from these hit or miss storms. Friday will be much cooler as the cold front sinks south of us. High temperatures may not even reach 80° in some neighborhoods. There is the chance of showers Friday, especially during the morning. Steamy summer weekend across Maryland with more storms The upcoming weekend will turn hotter and more muggy once again as the cold front that brought relief Friday lifts north as a warm front. Expect variable clouds with hot and muggy weather Saturday and Sunday. Widely scattered to scattered thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon and evening hours. These storms will be of the hit or miss variety, so not every neighborhood will get wet. Neighborhoods that do receive storms could receive locally heavy rainfall, cloud to ground lightning, and gusty winds. Highs over the weekend will be steamy. Saturday's highs will climb toward the upper 80s. Sunday's high temperatures will reach 90°, but with high humidity levels, feels like temperatures will top out in the middle to upper 90s.

New report says Canada faces a health security emergency -- and the fix could unlock economic growth

OTTAWA, ON, June 25, 2025 /CNW/ - A new report from the Public Policy Forum (PPF) is calling on the federal government to recognize that Canada faces a national health security emergency and must address escalating threats to the country's health and economic security. With geopolitical instability and declining U.S. leadership in global health, the report warns that Canada must act quickly to modernize how it regulates and approves medicines, as well as build resilience in its life sciences sector. Supply chain disruptions resulting from U.S. trade policy, the erosion of public trust in science and an underinvestment in domestic businesses have all exposed serious vulnerabilities, which, if left unchecked, pose direct threats to the health of Canadians. Titled Canada's Code Red: An urgent playbook to build an economy-boosting life sciences sector, the report highlights the value of Canada's life sciences sector as an investment that will yield health and economic returns. It argues that the threat of an emergency demands a new sense of urgency, with innovative solutions that include: streamlining regulatory processes, enabling more flexible and rapid decision-making and removing bureaucratic bottlenecks that delay life sciences investment and product approvals. Recognition of a national health security emergency would also send a powerful signal to international investors, provincial partners and industry leaders that Canada is committed to becoming a global hub for health innovation and commercialization. The report marks the launch of PPF's new Healthy Canadians, Competitive Canada (HCCC) research program. Under the umbrella of PPF's Mission Canada initiative, the HCCC program will document links between a vibrant life sciences sector and the country's overall economic and social success. "Canada must prioritize resilience, innovation, and self-reliance," the report notes. "The newly elected federal government has an unparalleled opportunity to redefine Canada's life sciences landscape by embracing urgency, dismantling bureaucratic barriers and fostering a culture of innovation." With the right approach, the report says that: "…. Canada can transform its life sciences sector into a cornerstone of national strength — one that protects its citizens' health while contributing significantly to economic prosperity, ensuring healthy Canadians within a competitive Canada." To enable this, the report recommends a series of 'plays': Recognize that Canada faces a national health security emergency, and that meaningful change within regulatory bodies and among government decision-makers must quickly boost the life sciences sector; Fast-track the rollout of Health Emergency Readiness Canada (HERC) to coordinate pandemic preparedness and biomanufacturing capacity; Create a Canadian life sciences performance scorecard to track progress in R&D, talent, infrastructure and investment; Recruit top global talent through a coordinated national life sciences workforce strategy — in particular, fast-tracked immigration and academic placement for U.S. researchers; Adopt a 'made in Canada' strategy to prioritize domestic innovation and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains; and Unlock Canadian health data as a national asset for research and commercialization. "This report is a call to action for policymakers in Canada to respond with determination in supporting Canada's life sciences sector," said Inez Jabalpurwala, President and CEO of the Public Policy Forum. "The vital importance of the sector to Canadians' overall health, as well to the economy as a whole, has long been clear — it must now be addressed with pandemic-level urgency." Written by journalist Christopher Waddell, the report was informed in part by the insights generated by PPF's Life Sciences Forum Leadership Table, co-chaired by Mark Lievonen, principal of JML Advisory Services and former co-chair of Canada's COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force, and Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, managing partner at TwinRiver Capital. "The good news is that with the right policy decisions and decisive action we can turbocharge growth of the life science sector," Ms. Jabalpurwala said, "ensuring our businesses are protecting the health of Canadians, as well as boosting economic growth."

Code Red: Victory Outreach's initiative to support 'Twilights Treasures'

The Twilights Treasures were invited to a time of pampering that took place on June 5 where they were treated over a period of five hours. Image: Supplied Restoring hope and dignity was the order of the day when, recently, the Victory Outreach ministries hosted their annual Code Red event pampering a group of sex worker women, endearingly referred to as 'Twilights Treasures'. The event, which is hosted annually in June, is one of the many ways in which the church stands united to make a difference in its communities. This year, Code Red took place between June 4 and 6, 2025. On June 5, the Twilights Treasures were invited to a pampering event where they received five hours of treatment. Volunteers had arrived from all over the city to give hair, nails, pedicures, and massage treatments, and the women received donations of food, clothing, and toiletries. Video Player is loading. Whether it be drug addiction, gangsterism, or prostitution, while others see women of the night, prostitutes, drug addicts, the homeless, criminals, or rejects of society, Victory Outreach sees a life that can be impacted and turned around. 'The aim is to go out and tell the ladies of the night that there is hope for them, and they are loved. Most of these women are found in deep, dangerous places that many would avoid. The mission of this event is to reach out and help others see what they don't see in themselves. This event specifically reaches out to a special group of women whom they prefer to call 'Twilights Treasures'. Women living in especially difficult situations often find themselves at night doing the unmentionable.' Volunteers had come from all over the city to do hair, nails, pedicures, and massage treatments and the women received donations of food, clothing and toiletries. Image: Supplied About the event, regional pastor Nuriska Lopez said she was filled with hope when one of the women they had pampered recognised one of the volunteers as somebody she had met as a former 'Twilight Treasure'. 'One of them recognised one of the girls who was with us. She was once a Twilight Treasure that we reached on this very street last year. They recognised her and were very excited to see her. This reminds me of the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well, and then went back to tell her friends, to tell her family, to tell the whole neighbourhood where she came from, and that Jesus is the answer for them. Selena was busy testifying about the change in her life and the help she received, and they were so excited to see her.' Image: Supplied In conversation with one of the business owners who participated in this year's event, Tanya Burt - a stylist from Eastridge in Mitchells Plain - said: 'I was eager and willing for such an opportunity. It was indeed a liberating experience to walk up to these ladies to offer them my services as a stylist. "Beautifying them, doing their nails and makeup was indeed a very empowering experience. Seeing their transformation was indeed a fulfilling experience. It's indeed liberating to see them fill up with joy and pride.'
