‘Hydro ganja' a major challenge: CM

MUMBAI: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said 'hydro ganja' or hydroponic ganja (marijuana) is a big challenge as drug syndicates have found new ways to transport it across borders, while some countries have legalised it. (Photo by Anshuman Poyrekar/ Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) Speaking in the legislative council on Thursday, Fadnavis said, five days ago, two Indonesian nationals were arrested with 21kg of hydroponic ganja valued at ₹21.55 crore in Mumbai. Hydroponic ganja refers to cannabis plants grown without soil. This method gives growers precise control over the plant's environment, which can result in quicker growth and higher yields. While the drug is being sold on the dark web, dealers are also shipping it via courier services, and concealing it in cargo consignments coming in via the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and ports in Gujarat. Even terminal cancer patients are being used as drug carriers, he said. Fadnavis said police have instructed all postal and courier companies to closely inspect consignments, to avoid being named as accused in case of a lapse. Joint task forces will monitor social media and the dark net. Fadnavis said the FDA could play a big role in controlling the drug. 'In rural areas, Codeine is consumed. We have instructed all pharmacies to install CCTVs. Also, the drug must be sold only against prescriptions,'' he said. Highlighting the role of social media in trafficking hydro ganja, the chief minister said messages are exchanged to sell the substance and to make payments. 'Our cyber cell has pinpointed 15 places on the dark web and arrested people.' Fadnavis also shared details on drug kingpin Naveen Chichkar, who was deported from Malaysia to India in May. He said Chichkar, who had bought an island in Australia, had sent drugs from Thailand to India via courier.

Nashik Rural police seize drugs worth 8.5L in month-long drive

Nashik: The Nashik rural police conducted a successful month-long operation in May, targeting the sale, consumption, and transportation of narcotic drugs and products across the district's rural areas. This initiative led to the seizure of narcotic products valued at Rs 8.49 lakh. During the drive, the police registered a total of 22 cases and arrested 29 individuals. Seized items included over 36 kg of ganja — valued at more than Rs 7.21 lakh. The police also confiscated 8,610 tablets of alprazolam, locally known as 'Kutta Goli', worth Rs 1.14 lakh. Additionally, 50 bottles of 100 ml Codeine phosphate, valued at Rs 9,500, and over 4 kg of Bhang, worth more than Rs 3,000, were seized. Senior police officials confirmed that this special drive was undertaken under the guidance of Nashik Range IG (Special) Dattatray Karale. Personnel from all 40 police stations of Nashik Rural and the Local Crime Branch intensified their intelligence gathering efforts concerning drug sales and consumption. Throughout the month, the police also identified eight individuals who were found smoking ganja. A senior police officer, while talking to TOI, said under the guidance of SP Balasaheb Patil more activities have been planned to eliminate the menace of drugs from the rural district. "Alprazolam tablets are sold clandestinely in Malegaon on a large scale. We are keeping a special focus on the sale of these tablets in the town, apart from the smuggling of other drugs and banned products in the rural district," the officer said. Patil, additional SP of Malegaon Teghbir Singh Sandhu, and other senior officers have appealed to the in-charge officers of all the police stations to go all out to eliminate the menace of drugs from the rural district.

Suspect accused of using 10 doctors' DEA numbers during prescription fraud scheme in Abilene, West Texas

ABILENE, Texas () – A suspect accused of using DEA numbers from 10 different doctors to try and fill prescriptions at dozens of pharmacies around Abilene and west Texas has been arrested. Andrew Trevino was taken into custody for Fraudulent Use of Identifying Information in Taylor County last week in connection to the allegations. Court documents state police began investigating Trevino in May 2023 after receiving reports that an individual was representing himself as a doctor to get prescription pills from pharmacies across Abilene. Trevino was identified as the suspect and found to have used 10 different doctors' DEA numbers to try and get prescriptions filled for fictitious patients at 58 different pharmacies in Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, Snyder, Abilene, and San Angelo over a period of 6 days. All of the prescriptions were for Promethazine with Codeine. Most of the pharmacies did not fill the prescriptions because they were able to identify the attempts as fraud, but Trevino was caught on surveillance video picking up one of the prescriptions from a Pharmacy in Abilene.
