Michigan State star Coen Carr not included in early 2026 NBA mock drafts
Michigan State basketball fans who are hoping to see Coen Carr spend a few more years in East Lansing may have gotten some good news on that front on Friday. With the 2025 NBA draft now concluded, with another MSU star, Jase Richardson, going No. 25 to the Orlando Magic, NBA draft analysts now turn their attention to the 2026 NBA draft and early mock drafts are starting to roll in. While many, including myself, think that Coen Carr will have a chance to be a first-round draft pick next year, thanks to his insane athleticism and rapidly improving defense, that does not appear to be the consensus right now. In fact, in the first mock drafts I have seen for 2026, including ESPN and Bleacher Report, Coen Carr wasn't mentioned at all, which was a little surprising to me. More: Ranking Michigan State basketball's 2025-26 roster by NBA draft potential A lot can change during the year, especially if Carr emerges as MSU's go-to scorer this year, but at least right now, it doesn't seem like he's on draft experts' radars going into the season. Michigan State basketball takeaways, highlights from opening night of Moneyball Pro-Am
Check out some of the notable Michigan State takeaways, injury updates and highlights from opening night of Moneyball Pro-Am McCulloch said he is 2 weeks into a 6-week recovery from a stress fracture in his foot. Plans to be back to full basketball activities in late July. A Michigan State basketball summer tradition is officially back. The 20th annual Moneyball Pro-Am event tipped off on Tuesday night, with many Spartans once again taking place in this year's event. This event annually provides fans and media some early insight to the upcoming season and helps set expectations for players and the team as a whole -- keeping in mind you have to take any positives with a grain of salt, of course. The opening night on Tuesday included some interesting takeaways and notes, as we were updated a key injury status, got our first look at some new players and witnessed Coen Carr doing Coen Carr things at the rim. Here are some of the notable takeaways, thoughts and highlights through social media posts related to the Spartans participating in the opening night of the Moneyball Pro-Am -- courtesy of fans and media with boots on the ground in Holt, Mich.: Jesse McCulloch recovering from foot injury Jesse McCulloch -- one of the Spartans' key big men for this upcoming season -- is in he midst of recovering from a stress fracture in his foot. He told Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press that he is expected to back to "full basketball activities" in late July. McCulloch redshirted this past season and is expected to play some key minutes for the Spartans this upcoming season as either a reserve or potential starter at center. Incoming freshman also sits out opening night Another potential injured Spartan to monitor is incoming freshman small forward Jordan Scott. According to Solari, Scott was at Moneyball on Tuesday but was not dressed in uniform and spotted with a sleeve on his left calf but expects to be back playing next week. Scott told Solari it's just a "precautionary move" after tweaking it recently. Jordan Scott here tonight at Moneyball but not in uniform. Wearing a sleeve on his left calf. No Jeremy Fears either (guessing he's at the NBA draft with his family). Carson Cooper and Trey Fort playing in this first game of the night. New Spartans PG Divine Ugochukwu impresses Multiple fans in attendance on opening night posted on social media about Ugochukwu looking impressive, particularly his shot. This is a notable development as the Miami (FL) transfer shot only 17.6% from three-point range last season, with fans noting his shot as a concern as he joins the Spartans this upcoming season. You can see some of his highlights from the night in the video posted on social media below: Divine Ugochukwu on the opening night of Moneyball @iamMoneyball First look at incoming freshman PF Cam Ward Ward is a player that some expect to have an instant impact on the Spartans this upcoming season. Here are some highlights from his opening night at Moneyball Pro-Am: Cam Ward on the opening night of Moneyball @iamMoneyball Positive reviews for MSU transfer SG Trey Fort Like Ugochukwu, multiple fans had positive things to say about Fort's opening night at Moneyball Pro-Am. The Samford transfer was one of the big gets for the Spartans this offseason and is expected to start for Michigan State this upcoming season. Highlights from Fort's night can be seen below: Trey Fort on opening night of Moneyball @iamMoneyball Coen Carr can still light up the gym Moneyball Pro-Am always results in fun highlight plays (especially since defense is typically optional), so of course there was going to be at least one Carr massive dunk. Watch MSU star Coen Carr throw down monster dunk on opening night of Moneyball Pro-Am
It didn't take long for Coen Carr to impress the crowd on opening night of the Moneyball Pro-Am event It's the opening night of the Moneyball Pro-Am and to no surprise Coen Carr has already thrown down a highlight reel dunk. The annual Moneyball Pro-Am tipped off on Tuesday night, with a number of Spartans taking place in the opening games. That included Carr, who was quick to impress the crowd with a massive alley-oop dunk. Check out the incredible athletic play from Carr in the social media video post below (courtesy of the account @FromEastLansing): Sure, the dunk itself isn't anywhere near the best stuff we've seen from Carr. But do you see the lift off the floor Carr is getting? His face is above rim level as he's finishing off the dunk -- that's not something seen often from some of the best NBA dunkers, let alone a college player. The Moneyball Pro-Am event will run through July so prepare for more monster plays from Carr and other Spartans over the next few weeks. BTN analyst says prepare for a 'different', more versatile Coen Carr this upcoming season
BTN analyst says prepare for a 'different', more versatile Coen Carr this upcoming season "We will see a different Coen Carr this season. It could get scary if that ball handling has improved like his jumper." Carson Cooper told me Monday that we will see a different Coen Carr this season. It could get scary if that ball handling has improved like his jumper. 🫣🤯 — Rapheal Davis (@RaphealDavis3) June 19, 2025 One Big Ten hoops analyst has reportedly heard it's time to prepare for a "different" Coen Carr this upcoming season. If you follow Michigan State basketball (or really college basketball as a whole), you know that Carr can throw down some of the best dunks out there and has pure incredible unmatched athletic ability. However, the focus to improve his shooting and ball handling has apparently been on display this offseason, with Rapheal Davis of the Big Ten Network recently saying he's heard positive things around this part of his game. According to Davis, he said he has recently heard from Carr's Spartan teammate Carson Cooper "that we will see a different Coen Carr this season." Davis went on to add that "it could get scary if that ball handling has improved like (Carr's) jumper." These statements from Davis were posted on social media platform X after quote tweeting a highlight post of Carr during what appears to be offseason workouts. You can see the full post from Davis and the accompanying highlights below: Carr showed significant improvements in his all-around game this past season, jumping from 3.1 points to 8.1 points and 1.8 rebounds to 3.6 rebounds per game from his freshman to his sophomore season. It was clear early in the season that Carr was no longer just a highlight-generator and more of a complete basketball player at the Big Ten level. Carr is expected to be one of the top players on the Spartans' squad next year, and his need to meet those expectations only grew this week with the news of Kaleb Glenn's injury. If Carr can truly take the next step with his ball handling and outside shooting, then he will be an All-Big Ten selection next year. I'm very confident in that statement, and hearing this kind of feedback about Carr's growth excites me for what's to come this upcoming season.
