Inside the new spa woodland pods that have opened in the UK that make you feel like you are abroad

Spa breaks at Moddershall Oaks also come with a two-course dinner PURE BLISS Inside the new spa woodland pods that have opened in the UK that make you feel like you are abroad Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) I HAVE been on more spa breaks than I care to admit – and I may have found a new favourite. Moddershall Oaks, a luxury spa set in glorious Staffordshire woodland, was just a ten-minute drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Moddershall Oaks is a luxury spa set in glorious Staffordshire woodland 2 I get to try the new Golden Glow spa facial package But as we pulled up to this leafy, quiet spot, I knew the boutique size would mean fewer people and more peace, all for me. Family-owned, this spa hotel has just ten rooms in the main building, as well as 14 newly-added, luxury woodland pods dotted around the site. When staying in an overnight spa suite, you're greeted with a welcome drink on arrival and have access to facilities from 3pm until 4.30pm on your day of departure. First things first, we settle in our room, which has a patio looking out onto the stunning hills – and, lucky us, brilliant sunshine, too. My treatment is booked for 4pm and I get to try the new Golden Glow spa facial package. For 25 minutes, my skin is blessed with scrubs, a wild honey mask and calming oils, as well as a gentle head and shoulder massage, all to wash away life's stresses. I then rejoin my partner in the main spa area, where there is a hydrotherapy pool with heated tiled loungers, reflexology footbaths, a 10m pool and a steam room. The hydrotherapy pool certainly packs a punch, which makes a change from other spas I've been to where the pressure can be quite weak. What I love most is that it's not busy at all. I finish the indoor experience off with the toasty relaxation room where phones are not allowed, which I wholeheartedly welcome, so I'm forced to switch off. Colcot & Spa is great for families with playbarn and pools But there's lots more to explore outside, including a more bustling spa pool, access to a Kelo sauna and a gym. What made this retreat extra-special was the private outdoor heated spa pool. You get a 30-minute slot to yourselves, and there's even a button to request service. It's blissfully refreshing to sink into the warm bubbles as the spring air hits your freshly-treated face, with the evening sun slowly setting behind the distant trees. For a moment, I don't feel like I'm in the UK at all. The spa breaks at Moddershall Oaks also come with a two-course dinner – and it's not like any old set menu either. There's a huge selection of familiar favourites like beer battered fish and chips, but I've gone for the slow braised Staffordshire beef – the meat is so succulent and you can't go wrong with a massive Yorkshire pudding. We retire to our suite and the treats continue. Rooms feature plush furnishings with king-size or twin beds, a separate lounge or seating area and a private deck or patio so you can soak up the woodland and gardens. And the unique, hobbit-style woodland pods feature a circular design and round windows, with eco-friendly bubble spa showers and freestanding roll-top baths. After the best kip I've had in ages on the comfy bed, it's off to the restaurant for a hearty cooked breakfast. I've gone for eggs Benedict, which were done to perfection, while the other half stuck with a trusty full English, which didn't disappoint. Moddershall proved just the right combination of boutique luxury and peaceful retreat.

My family got a free unlimited Premier Inn breakfast without even staying at the hotel

WE can all agree that a slap-up cooked breakfast is one of the best bits about a night away in a hotel - but who knew you could tuck in to Premier Inn's kids eat free deal without even staying overnight? Adults can get an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast with unlimited hot drinks and juice for just £10.99, with two under-16s eating free per grown-up. Advertisement 4 Two children can eat free with a paying adult at Premier Inn Credit: Uttoxeter hotel 4 You can also opt to have a continental breakfast excluding hot food for £8.99 per adult, still including hot drinks and juice That meant feeding five of us at Uttoxeter Premier Inn on our way to a big day out cost just £22, less than one adult meal would have done once we were at Alton Towers. It was a fantastic start to our family fun, as the boys piled their plates high with all manner of breakfast goodies that made a welcome change from our normal bowl of cereal or slice of toast. One bloke tucking into his full English nearby even stopped my husband to say my middle son was his hero, after seeing him wander past with a plate of pastries and pancakes plus a couple of sausages and hash browns for good measure. I have to admit that I had no idea you could get a Premier Inn breakfast without staying there until a friend mentioned it to me the day before our Alton Towers trip. Advertisement It sounded a bit too good to be true, so I dropped the hotel an email to ask if I could book a table for the morning and ten minutes later, it was all sorted. When we arrived, we headed into reception, which is in a different building from the restaurant, to enter our car registration into the system. The lovely Amy escorted us over to the restaurant and took our payment. She advised that prebooking is always a good idea - if the hotel is fully booked, they might struggle to accommodate extra people at breakfast. I found the hotel's email address on social media so it was very straightforward to make a booking. Advertisement Seeing my sons' eyes light up as they saw all the baked goods and trays of cooked breakfast made me smile. My eldest son had no hesitation in asking Amy if you could reload your plate as many times as you like. Colcot & Spa is great for families with playbarn and pools My only proviso was that we only take things we are definitely going to eat as we don't like food waste. So I'd rather the boys take less each time and then go back for more than stacking food sky-high and not being able to eat it all. Advertisement At the end, our plates were bare and we were all stuffed, so it meant we needed to carry less food around Alton Towers with us. We generally bring a picnic on days out anyway, but seeing that an adult would pay £22.50 at the all-you-can-eat Explorers' Pizza Pasta Buffet in the Katanga Canyon area, it made the brilliant breakfast bargain we bagged that morning even better. If you're not a fan of eggs and bacon for your breakfast, you can opt for a continental breakfast of cereal, pastries, fruit and yogurt at Premier Inn instead and that costs just £8.99 per adult, still including hot drinks and juice. So you could actually feed a family of six for just £18 if you chose that option. That's the same price as five ice creams at Alton Towers! Advertisement 4 You don't even have to be staying at the hotel to get a breakfast Now I'm on the lookout for more sites where we can start our day with a big feed for the whole family for next-to-nothing, especially as I don't have to cook or clean up afterwards. It would be great if you're having a beach day or on a city break, as both are places you're likely to find a Premier Inn. It's worth knowing that at some sites, the cost per adult might be £11.99 or £13.99, so you should check the price when you email to book if you're working to a budget. Advertisement Why not swap lunch for brunch and save yourselves a few pennies at the Premier Inn? There is also a clever way you can get free kids tickets to the UK's top theme park this summer. Plus, all the free classes your kids can do this summer including football coaching and circus lessons. 4 Catherine and her family stopped off at Uttoxeter Premier Inn on the way to Alton Towers to benefit from the offer
