The ultimate reason Bucks signed Cole Anthony
The post The ultimate reason Bucks signed Cole Anthony appeared first on ClutchPoints. Weeks after signing Myles Turner and releasing Damian Lillard, the Milwaukee Bucks added guards Cole Anthony and Gary Harris in free agency. General manager Jon Horst explains that he made the move to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo. Horst said that while Anthony cannot simply replace a player like Lillard, he believes the former first-round pick still has a high ceiling, he told 'The Athletic.' 'The idea on Cole is, and you can see a theme, there's another 24-, 25-year-old guard,' Horst told 'The Athletic.' 'He just turned 25 in May. Cole's an electric scorer. Two years ago, he was in the running for NBA Sixth Man of the Year. In our system, in our metrics, he's performed like a kind of starter, key reserve at different points in his young career.' By releasing Lillard, the Bucks have an opening at point guard they have yet to fill. Anthony, who averaged 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in his career-best 2021-2022 season, is the leading candidate to fill the void. Barring any further moves, Anthony will likely compete with 2025 Summer League star Jamaree Bouyea and rookie Mark Sears for point guard minutes. Harris, Gary Trent Jr., AJ Green and Andre Jackson Jr. will also factor into the backcourt rotation. Bucks GM Jon Horst compares Cole Anthony to Bobby Portis While Anthony will have to compete in training camp, Milwaukee is already bullish on his role with the team. Horth added that he sees Anthony as a 'guard version of Bobby Portis' on the Bucks. 'I think he can be one of the guys that you've seen year in and year out come into our system and get a higher dose of better shot quality because of playing with Giannis and playing in our system and improve as a shooter,' Horth said. 'I think he could have a huge shooting year, which would be massive for him and us. 'And he's just got an edge to him. I hope he takes this as an affectionate thing. When I saw the idea of Cole Anthony, him being free and our chance to get him, I think he's like a guard version of Bobby Portis. I think he can bring so much swag and energy to our team.' Anthony has never been known as an elite shooter. The former five-star recruit has hit just 34.5 percent of his career three-point attempts. However, few players create space quite like Giannis Antetokounmpo. Anthony is coming off a 35.3 percent three-point season, the second-best of his career. Cole Anthony headed to Milwaukee Bucks after buyout with Memphis Grizzlies
LAS VEGAS — The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a buyout with guard Cole Anthony, the team announced on July 12. The news was first reported by ESPN. Anthony is expected to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks following the move. Advertisement Memphis has been shopping Anthony in recent weeks after he was acquired in a trade with the Orlando Magic. Anthony, four first-round picks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope were traded to the Grizzlies for Desmond Bane. The Grizzlies needed to clear cap space in order to renegotiate Jaren Jackson Jr.'s contract and sign him to an extension. Now that Memphis is buying out Anthony, a pathway will be cleared to create the necessary cap space to make Jackson's five-year, $240 million deal official. Jackson's deal isn't the only move that should become official following Anthony's buyout. Memphis finally will be able to seal new contracts with Ty Jerome and Santi Aldama. Neither of those moves could be completed before Jackson's renegotiation deal because Memphis needed the cap space for Jackson's contract. Anthony is scheduled to make $13.1 million this season. The buyout likely will be for about what he will get with the Bucks, which is the veteran minimum. Advertisement After the buyout, the Grizzlies are expected to stretch a little more than $10 million in Anthony's salary over three seasons since he has one guaranteed year left on his contract. Cole Anthony to sign with Bucks after contract buyout with Grizzlies
The post Cole Anthony to sign with Bucks after contract buyout with Grizzlies appeared first on ClutchPoints. Cole Anthony won't be a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. Instead, he will represent the Milwaukee Bucks. Advertisement Anthony intends on signing with the Bucks this summer after accepting a contract buyout with the Grizzlies, per ESPN's NBA insider Shams Charania. Memphis acquired him and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope from the Orlando Magic in exchange for Desmond Bane. 'Cole Anthony has agreed to a contract buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies and plans to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks after he clears waivers, sources tell ESPN. Grizzlies finalized the buyout with Jeff Schwartz and Javon Phillips of Excel Sports for Anthony's new opportunity,' Charania said. What's next for Bucks after landing Cole Anthony © Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Anthony spent the first five years of his career with the Magic. Throughout 320 appearances, he averaged 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He shot 41.9% from the field, including 34.5% from beyond the arc, and 84.7% from the free-throw line. Advertisement Despite being active in the Magic's rotation throughout each regular season, his presence in the playoffs wasn't as frequent. Playing 24.8 minutes in each regular-season contest, his playing time goes down to 12.8 minutes per game in the playoffs. Anthony's role wasn't going to fit with Memphis considering the logjam at the point guard position. The Grizzlies already have star guard Ja Morant and have found a noteworthy young player on the rise in Scotty Pippen Jr. This would have reduced Anthony's role, making the contract buyout a reasonable one. The Bucks do improve at the guard position. After waiving and stretching the remainder of Damian Lillard's contract, they had an open spot available. This granted the chance for Anthony to enter the equation and take the spot. Milwaukee now has a backcourt featuring Anthony, Kevin Porter Jr. and Gary Trent Jr. The trio will look to assist Giannis Antetokounmpo in making noise in the Eastern Conference. The squad is coming off a first-round exit to the Indiana Pacers for the second consecutive year. Jackson is now under contract through 2029-30, after renegotiating the final year of his current deal and getting a raise to $33 million for the coming season. The extension kicks in in 2026-27, starting with a salary of $46.2 million. Advertisement The sides reached the agreement two weeks ago, but the Grizzlies needed to clear the space required to make the move happen before Jackson could actually sign the contract. He averaged 22.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Grizzlies in 74 games this past season and was an All-Star for the second time in his Memphis career. A three-time All-Defensive team pick — and the 2023 NBA defensive player of the year — Jackson has averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 407 career games with Memphis. Jackson had surgery for a turf toe injury earlier this month and will be re-evaluated likely sometime around the start of training camp this fall, though the Grizzlies haven't given any indication how long he will be sidelined to start the season. He suffered the injury in his right foot during offseason basketball activities, the team had said, adding that he is expected to have a full recovery. Locking up Jackson is part of a plan by Memphis to continue building around him and star point guard Ja Morant. Memphis was swept by eventual champion Oklahoma City in the first round of the playoffs in April. ___ AP NBA:
