Torfaen Apprenticeship Fair introduces pupils to new careers
The Torfaen Apprenticeship Fair, held on Friday, July 11, at Coleg Gwent's Torfaen Learning Zone in Cwmbran, was organised by MP Nick Thomas-Symonds and welcomed young people from St Alban's RC High School, Cwmbran High, and Croesyceiliog School. More than 20 employers and training providers attended, offering Year 10 pupils insights into apprenticeship pathways across South Wales. Mr Thomas-Symonds said: "Apprenticeships provide valuable skills and training in a number of sectors, giving young people the solid foundation for a successful career. "As local MP, supporting businesses and pushing for opportunities for young people in Torfaen are absolute priorities, so I'm delighted I could deliver this event alongside local schools, businesses, and training providers." Apprenticeship training providers including Coleg Gwent and the Aspire Shared Apprenticeship Programme were on hand to support employers and answer student questions. Richard Selby, managing director of Pro Steel Engineering, said: "Recruiting apprentices has helped us grow our business whilst providing opportunities for people in our local community. "We were delighted to attend today's event so we could share our growth plans for the future and inspire more local young people to consider a career with us." Neil Gregory, director at GOS Tool & Engineering Services Ltd, said: "Once again GOS are delighted to support Nick in pulling this event together and working alongside both national and local governments, schools, colleges and career services to provide this opportunity for young people in Torfaen."

College ‘buzzing' with excitement over new engineering campus
Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, which led the project, has handed the facility over to Coleg Gwent. It will be kitted out over the summer with state-of-the-art robotics, advanced manufacturing technologies, and immersive digital tools. The 21,808 sq ft campus will offer hi-tech training and education in robotics, and advanced manufacturing in fields such as automotive, aerospace, and information technology. The council secured £10.8 million funding from UK government and £4.8 million from the Welsh Government's Tech Valleys programme to transform the former Monwel Hankinson factory site in Ebbw Vale. Cabinet secretary for economy, energy and planning Rebecca Evans said: 'This fantastic new facility forms a key part of our vision to transform the South Wales Valleys into a globally recognised hub for innovation, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable technologies.' Cllr John Morgan, BGCBC cabinet member for economy and place, said: 'Hive has faced some challenges during its build, and I want to commend everyone involved for their commitment and vision in delivering this hugely important project." Nicola Gamlin, principal of Coleg Gwent, said: 'We're proud to take ownership of the state-of-the-art HiVE facility, a landmark development for education and skills in Blaenau Gwent and beyond. We're excited to welcome our first cohort of learners this September.' The learning starts even before HiVE however, with the HiVE Hub Programme in local schools, which is being funded by Welsh Government Tech Valleys and UK Government. The programme aims to create meaningful and sustainable links between the college and Blaenau Gwent schools to support high quality and inspirational learning experiences.

Caerphilly Pride 2025 embraces love, identity, and community
From midday until 7pm, the Pride Parade marched from St Martin's School, filling the streets with cheering crowds and rainbow flags, before gathering at Twyn Car Park. Gwent Police were in attendance to spread the message of inclusion and acceptance, as Tommy Cooper looked on. The day. on Saturday, July 5, was packed with live music, entertainment stages, and youth performances backed by organisations like Coleg Gwent and Unite Wales. Families, joined together in a joyful show of support, with local stalls offering food, drinks, and information that supported the town's #ChooseLocal initiative. The atmosphere was testament to the warm reception that Pride received, proving that smaller towns can host Pride events. Caerphilly Pride insist Saturday's celebrations was not just a parade, it was a clear stand for visibility, acceptance, and joy. With strong turnout and community spirit, the event left everyone looking forward to next year's festivities.
